this will be the most lib thing i will ever comment here (for now) but intimidation is power too. knowing the vast majority of the population of your hometown is ready to stand around in your yard shouting at you, to the guy being shouted at, can be pretty scary.
it's the implicit threat of violence that comes with those kinds of overwhelming numbers. it's a first step to the application of such.
