FPS Scanning Possible with the Antium Helmet or the new Ana Armor Wao Helmet

Video is in German, it shows off the ability to scan mineables and other players.

From the video it doesn't look like it works for dropped items or ships.

CIG has talked about armor sets specialized with different features.

We have combat specialized helmets now that help you to see your cross-hair/kills.

This looks like an early iteration towards scanning specialized armor sets.

Edit: And currently only achievable by attaching your helmet to your hip.
