Lot of salty folks in the comments. Yes, I hate dems too, but this is an important win when there's so much anti-trans legislature going through across the US.
It's really disappointing to see so many folks diverting attention away from a trans win to complain about democrats. This is the LGBTQ+ community can you please just let people be happy about one small win? There's vanishingly little to be happy about right now for trans folks.
I feel like Lemmy is going a great job collectively of diminishing every win against the Trump administration. Every step forward seems to get downplayed. If I limited my exposure to this forum I'd have a much bleaker picture of people successfully resisting. We actually had the supreme court come to a 5-4 decision against Trump's blanket firings.
If you only read Lemmy, though? You'd probably be inclined to assume that's all meaningless and we're already cooked. It's honestly pretty suspect.
I would urge everyone here to make sure it's not the only place you're getting your political messaging, and maybe take it with a huge grain of salt, because it's defeatist to the point of being propagandistic.
Dems: literally do nothing except not make things even worse
Liberals: "they finally show some spine!"
I heard for months before the election: "republicans have a plan this time! There's no barriers this time!"
I keep hearing now: "why aren't democrats doing anything?"
What can they do? What policy can they enact as a minority in the house or senate to stop EOs?
They could call for civil disobedience. They could maybe act like there is an attempt at a fascist takeover of government instead of prioritizing being nice and polite.
There are some democrat politicians that are sort of begging to take things seriously, such as AOC. But if the party itself doesn't get its shit together, they'll be remembered in history like the Weimar Republic.
legitimately a big deal for them
"Show(s) spine" is alongside "Here we go again" as a tool in the box for display copy that you never want to have to use.
Hergie Bacyadan, trans man olympic boxer: joke ba ako sayo?
I hate to be the one to piss in the punch bowl here, but the only reason that they did this is because it in fact didn't require any spine at all.
Whether or not trans women play women's sports is an issue that has no effect at all on the fortunes of corporations and billionaires, so none of the soft money the Democrats receive has been contingent on them ensuring that trans women were banned, so they were free to oppose it, and did. And that's it.
They didn't even push back against the reactionary talking points from the looks of it. The primary argument mentioned is "states' rights."
It's the same thing they've been doing with immigration, conceding every single point, until they eventually are running on "bipartisan legislation to address the issues!" That consists of all the Republican talking points from eight years ago.
The article just quotes a single person. Basing off a single person's quote is going to not be representative of how Dems have been talking about it in general. For instance, when a similar bill was in the house earlier, house minority leader Hakeem Jefferies spoke against it on very different grounds than "state rights"
