Bit idea: outsourced checkouts
some fast food places have tried having a call center take your order, that's about half way there.
Amazon already did that
Shit i completely forgot about that
I don't understand. I use self checkout almost exclusively and it's usually faster and easier. The last time I was at Target there were way more people using self checkout than not, and there were quite a few cashiers with next to no line. In that case it wasn't faster of course, but people still chose it over regular checkout. He says most retailers have ripped out their self checkout machines, but I've never seen that across many grocery stores. The few grocery stores I've seen without self checkout never had them in the first place.
I haven't seen grocery stores around here remove the self checkouts, but I have seen the self checkouts get more and more fussy about scanning exactly one item at a time and throwing a fit and needing to be unlocked by the attendant multiple times per checkout. Of course, since the attendant has to be constantly unlocking the fucking machines they don't actually have time to check whatever made the goddamn things throw a fit in the first place, but it does make the process of using them extremely annoying for all involved.
