Weird, I don't remember it that way at all.
Janets career wasn't doing too well before the boob reveal. And the stunt seemed highly planned as a way to create a bit of buzz.
It just didn't turn out the way they wanted.
Buuut that's just how I remember it. Very typical Hollywood shenanigans.

I always assumed it was planned , since she was wearing a sun-shaped cover underneath. Why else would you wear one?
It sucks that the pearl-clutching media ostracized her so much.
