Can't help but wonder what was the point? My paranoia can't help but cook up someone wanting to scrub something that hadn't seen wide distribution yet, so pay a small group to slam the internet archive and wipe all traces away before anyone else gets a chance to back it up...
Far fetched, yeah, kinda. But it avoids the usual Streisand trap from more conventional approaches.
Balance of probabilities says someone did it because they could. That's the most likely situation.
However, I see where you're coming from and could definitely see that happening.
