The intention, said the officials who ordered the rocks painted over the past week, was to eliminate the unsanctioned project, which was created by people who are homeless, and to reclaim the area for the community at large.
This is heartbreaking for so many reasons. The homeless have no one to mourn them and are largely forgotten by us in life and in death. The only way we could help remember the people who were abandoned by us was a small project of love. Now that love has been extinguished. The homeless are gone forever and the worst kind of people can now ignore the results of their decisions, they can again ignore the people they kicked to the curb. It's wrong a person can be so disrespected for doing nothing but having a hard time.
