So Emily Armstrong, the new Linkin Park lead singer, may or may not be a Scientologist apparently

Any thoughts? Sucks if true.

  • A) Linkin Park sucks and I don't know what was in the water back in 2000 that made us all think numetal was okay

    B) Scientology does the same shit other religions do. Like wait until you hear about this thing called the Catholic church or guys like Kenneth Copeland. Then you have these fucks like Falun Gong. Not to mention all the religious terrorist organizations. There's an entire country right now carrying out a genocide against people who don't share their ethno-nationalist interpretation of their religion.

Scientology is just more obviously wrong because we know exactly when, how, and where it started. Mormons get similar criticism for the same reasons. The only reason Christianity gets a pass from people is because 2,000 years have gone by since its original grift.

    • I don't think it's fair to lump all religions in with Scientology. There are offshoots of other religions that are as bad or worse (FLDS, ISIS) , but as a whole faith Scientology is worse (more controlling and extreme) than anything else of comparable size.

But is it, though? Anabaptists and Jehovah's Witnesses excommunicate at even the smallest levels. They will often do this to people who try to seek justice against leaders over sexual misconduct. Not to mention completely cutting children off if they become apostates. Anabaptists will throw people to the wind for being LGBTQ+, regardless of the person's age.

And I don't know how you get more extreme than zionism where they murder children and carry out widespread rape. I don't think scientologists have open fired on their own believers to kill non-scientologists that might be nearby.

        • Anabaptists and JWs are both extremist Christians. Methodists don't do that shit. There isn't a mainstream branch of Scientology where you don't have to cut off contact with your kid because they found another religion or decided to just be an atheist, or came out as LGBT.

Zionism isn't a religion, it's a white supremacist settler colonial ideology.

You're not arguing in good faith if, when I point out that many religions have extremist offshoots but are not themselves, inherently, radical and dangerous, you start pointing out instances of radical offshoots of religions. It comes off like reddit new atheism shit.

You want to say that Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism etc overall are just as dangerous as Scientology but it's just obviously untrue and kind of bigoted.

Correct. But it's still based on religious beliefs. The justifications it uses are based on religious texts.

They are inherently radical and dangerous, which is my point. Like Jesus said divorce was a sin (regardless of abuse) but slavery is fine and slaves should just be happy they'll get into heaven. Men who have lustful thoughts should pluck out their own eyes. How is a patriarchal, slaver ideology compatible with socialism? How is this not considered extreme? If anything, the extremists are following what their religion told them to do.

Or maybe you should look closer at why you're correctly hostile towards Scientology, but just accept other religions as valid ideologies, despite each of them being anti-materialist by definition and reinforce unjust hierarchies. Or how these beliefs justify suffering inflicted on people by other people. You want to hand wave away the conclusions made by these religions as "extremist," despite those beliefs being mainstream opinions amongst believers.

I think with education and improvements to material conditions will cause religion to dissappear. I also think they are antithetical to Marxism and are one of the pillars of reactionary ideology.
