Some of the new rules include banning encampments, limiting the duration of demonstrations and allowing protests only in designated spaces.
Kinda defeats the purpose of protests eh? They're meant to be in your face so that you can't just walk by.
There's a fine line between protest and harassment. At some point you're just doing the equivalent of screaming at a McDonald's cashier about the quality of their food.

You're not supposed to be able to 'just ignore it'. Where is your sense of humanity? Where is your sense of shame to even keep you from saying some self-centered, me-me-me Amerikan-assed shit like this? Settler ass.

Anytime someone engages in civil disobedience (like a protest) it is crucial that the correct people are targeted.
For example: if you want to stop your school from investing in Israel you target the administration (President, VP, investment managers etc.) and specifically those who make the decisions. This could be protesting at fundraisers so that it deeply affects the image of the school and those in charge, and serves as a threat of reduced funding.
You wouldn't, for example, go into the classroom during a lecture and yell about Israel, making the lives of the students and professors worse. Why? Because the source of power and social change is the students, staff, and faculty, at the school. And annoying them creates more enemies rather than allies.
Always do a "power analysis" to know who to talk to and bring on your side, and who you need to disrupt in order to make the change. Otherwise we ignore class solidarity (yes, soak up the pun) and are doomed to fail

If you need a permit to protest, you're not protesting, you're throwing a parade. If Amerikan students are really worth the effort to save, if this generation really deserves a country, a culture, and a demonym not tarred with the brush of genocidal settlerdom, they'll ignore these new rules and regs and keep on as they have been, louder.
Otherwise, they're no better than the original settlers.
Remind me again how did we get those free speech rules on college campuses in the first place? What was it in response to? Oh right the inability to protest the Vietnam war and the demand from students of that era and the one that followed to be allowed to protest.
Only aside from Iraq which didn't last that long to my recollection every major protest movement has been against either enemies of the US or those the US is ambivalent about like South Africa.
So this "right" has never really annoyed the powers that be until now with the pro-Palestine solidarity stuff and now they have to crush it and now all the pretensions of liberalism to caring about free speech and expression and thought are being put away and we're assured these people represent hate and must be crushed.
Seems like we never really had that right. It was a concession given then never expected to be used again and now that it has been there's outrage and the iron fist.
Funny how free speech is important again for this post, next lemmy post will be pearl clutching and overdramatic posturing about somewhere letting nazis speak.
