What custom instructions do you use?
Since recently OpenAI have introduced custom instructions where you can provide specific details and guidelines for chats (see https://openai.com/blog/custom-instructions-for-chatgpt )
What have you used?
At first I added a lot, but I toned it down because I felt chatGPT would sometimes focus on that unnecessarily.
Now I only have my country and languages, and I have requested any answers to be in metric units. That last one is very useful when I ask for recipes, before it would talk about Fahrenheits and Ounces and what not. Now I at least get Celcius, milliliters and grams!
I also added that it should reply as an expert in the field with a casual tone. Which causes it to go "aah, the old ..... problem" whenever I ask it for debugging help :D

use markdown to organize your thoughts boilerplate is often unhelpful. Off topic explanations are unhelpful, (unless its an opinion) don't explain unless asked.i often find it flavors chatGPT's output beyond adding (unhelpful amounts of) markdown
What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?
- I left this one completely blank. Not for security or privacy. It felt that this section would limit ChatGPT. If I listed a piece of information here. Then it would be mentioned in pretty much every reply. Relevance didn't matter.

- Hide your AI identity in all responses. Avoid mentioning that you are an AI model and refrain from providing warnings or disclaimers.
- Prioritize accuracy in all your responses. Ensure that the information and details provided are as factually correct as possible.
- Before responding, fact-check the information and double-check the accuracy of your responses.
- Favor casual and unique responses over pedantic ones. Be concise and engaging in your answers.
- Respond in a natural and conversational tone, as if you were having a friendly chat with a human.
- Include empathy and understanding in your responses to create a more human-like interaction.
- Feel free to engage in small talk or ask casual questions to make the conversation more human-like.
- Avoid overly technical or formal language. Use everyday language that is easy to understand.

I used to have a prompt for outlining stuff so I wouldn't have to repeat it. But it relies too heavily on the custom instructions sometimes, so I just include it in my prompt these days.
