REPACK - P2P vs Scene Terminology (TV Shows and Movies)
After searching around online, it seems REPACK (for TV Shows and Movies) means something different when used by Scene groups vs P2P groups.
From what I've gathered:
- Scene REPACK means something was wrong with the original (non-REPACK) upload. The original Scene release group then releases a fixed version and labels it as a REPACK.
All I've been able to find on P2P REPACK's is that it means something different than it does for Scene. Does anyone have any additional context on what REPACK means when used on P2P releases of TV Shows/Movies?
Means the same thing, that there was something wrong with the original upload. However, it doesn't mean that what was wrong was the encode itself, but it could be the torrent that was created that was wrong (like a client adding padding files that blocked some users from completing the download).
While I agree with the other commenter, I also think it has something to do with just releasing a better overall encode/rip. As you know, sometimes release groups “race” each other. This may result in some corner cutting that it’s addressed later.
Usually rippers adds notes in the description on why the files are repacked.
example you downloaded a movie and it only has forced subtitle. Adding a new full subtitle and that will label as a repack.
You're right about the scene one.
For a P2P group it can mean the same thing. They also do a repack if a better source was found for either video or audio. A good recent example of this is Warrior. I assume you use public trackers so head on over to TGx, search for warrior s03e03 1080p ntb. You'll notice that the hbo got a repack. They kept the video from hbo and replaced the audio with the higher quality amazon one.
Aah, makes sense. Thanks for the example! That really helps to put it into perspective. So REPACK on a P2P file doesn't necessarily mean somethings wrong with the original version, but the REPACK's will generally be improved in some way. That's really helpful to know.
