As a fun history fact, the Irish people played an important part in the History of the Spanish Empire. They emigrated to the Spanish colonies for religious freedom to practice their Catholic faith and some rose to prominence within the administration.
For example, Ambrosio O'Higgins was an Irish born Viceroy of Peru. His son, Bernardino O'Higgins went on to become Dictator of an independent Chile.
