I found myself down a YouTube rabbit hole once of people one-upping each other by making segmented displays with fewer and fewer segments and seeing who could use the least and still have it be decipherable for all numbers

Only with a rectangular 8. Doesn’t work for a ‘real’ 8. This solves that issue.
11 0 ReplyExcept you have to turn the thing on its head for some numbers which I consider a worse tradeoff.
15 0 Replywatch the video linked in another comment. There are circle based 7 segment displays, if you realy need those curves.
i can see from how you did 'real' that 8, that i don't need to remind you that there are no real 🖐️✌️🖕 :)

Have you ever seen a 7 segments display?
69 0 ReplyYeah I thought about that too

I argue that when presented with 9 normal looking numbers, the o is not an acceptable alternative to 0
28 0 ReplySo many fonts just do whatever to be different and stand out from the crowd, but all it does is making it easier to avoid them
8 0 ReplyIt just looks like a lowercase 0. Lowercase digits often look better anyway.

Don't give New Years party glasses manufacturers any more ideas.
28 0 ReplyThey won't do it because they can only sell them once

You can make every digit 0-9 with a boxy 8. Look at any 7 segment display.

Pro tip for if you need to scratch out sensitive penned down text: don't scratch it out, it'll still be readable. Instead write other similar numbers and letters over it. Have a 9? Write a p over it, then use the circle for the bottom of an 8, then write a B over the p.. it'll be impossible to discern what the original letter or number was. Do this for all letters and you're good.

5 0 ReplyI find setting fire to said sensitive text is usually pretty effective.
If that's not enough, separating the ashes and sending them to different continents works pretty well too.

Literally 1984
13 0 ReplyI want a clock that illuminates like this, but I guess it'd need to be able to flip to really do it with just a 4 and 8.
13 0 ReplyThen I think you're in the market for a nixie clock. Nixie tubes don't use that 8/4 melded character, but the effective look is extremely similar.
8 0 ReplyI made one of those a while back, I like it a lot, but I sort of like the idea of the numbers have a different vertical height, I may have to try @Wirlocke 's idea and do a 484 design.

It wouldn't need to flip if you just make a symmetrical upsidedown 4 on the topside of the 8.

I never write 4 that way, though
5 0 ReplyMe neither. I also cross my 7's.
3 0 ReplyFunny, I do box top 4's but don't cross my 7's
My 9's also have a tail pointing straight down though

Arrange a high density led strip in this layout, the individually addressable ones. Then you’ve got a new digit display style
