I fell while skiing and slid down the track, head first, towards a large boulder. When I finally stopped and looked up it was around 10cm away from my face.
I think skiing and horse riding are the most normalized extreme sports out there. People think it's just a normal sport while in reality it's way more dangerous than for example sky diving.
With skiing you're at least a bit in control of how much risk you're taking, with possibilities for very low risk fun. With horses, yeah if you get hit in the head or fall the potential for very bad injuries is always there.
And yeah I know that some people manage to fuck themselves up badly on green slopes but still I personally always felt pretty safe while skiing because I'm a pussy and make sure I never ski above my level.
But there are also all the other skiers going down fast that can hit you.
I tried snowboarding once and just when I was getting the hang of it I fell on some ice and broke my thumb. Nothing life threatening but it required a surgery and I couldn't do any sports for about 6 months so it was super irritating. After that I decided it's too much risk even on green slopes and just gave up.
Really unfortunate that this happened to you on your first time... There's definitely always a possibility for it, you're right.
I learned when I was a kid so for me it's like riding a bike and I get in control of it quickly even if it's been a few years since the last time. But I'm not like, a great skier and don't try to go particularly fast, I just enjoy spending the day on the mountain.
