As an AI architect, I was stoked to get my hands on a device with local AI capabilities. The launch demo where copilot coached the guy through playing Minecraft was super-cool. The implication that I would have a personal AI assistant with me at all times appears to have been car-salesman-level overselling.
All of the features MSFT promoted on this device, except co-create with Ms paint, was vaporware. The device is a nice bit of compute hardware, but its AI capabilities are non-existent. Sure, I can launch the copilot web-app and ask it stuff, but I can do the same from my iPhone.
Is anyone else as underwhelmed by this device as I am?

The original was posted on /r/surface by /u/Coridoras on 2024-07-02 21:36:56+00:00. *** The SP11 has really long battery life, a fan that rarely turns on at all and good performance. But the main drawback is of course compatibility. There are dozens of Open Source apps ported to Android, but not to Windows on Arm yet, including some games. Therefore I think the Subsystem for Android finally has its day and starts being useful for the masses. The ability to translate Android Apps and let them run natively on yoir Arm CPU would be awesome.
However, not only did they stop support for it from 2025 onwoards, it straight up doesn't work with the new Snapdragon Chips! And I don't understand why.
So many games that have an Android port, so many useful apps with an Android version. Using it to install Android Switch emulators? Nope. Running the Android version of Godot? No. Running games, like BTD6 as an example? Nope.
I kind of think it is a huge missed oppurtunity which would help a lot with its compatibility

My SP11 arrived the day before I left for Punta Cana so I decided to load it up with some movies and games to see how it would work out, on both the flight there and back I was able to watch 2 movies and play some Borderlands 3, and was still left with 40%+ battery life, my SP9 would not have even made it to the end of my flight and now that vacation is over I have gotten to really use this thing and its been amazing as far as battery life and compatibility go and will only get better with updates. My Sp9 and Oneplus Pad are both now for sale =)

This is round two - previous post here
Both devices charged to 100%, recommended power mode, disabled automatic brightness control, screen always on, screen 120hz/dynamic, windows update done, apps from store updates done, power saving at any % disabled, Wifi 5GHz
battery use - HDR + bright screen
HDR on, Brightness set to 70% (both looking similar)
Media Player in loop, playing “Samsung: Travel With My Pet HDR” 2160p60 HEVC video from here
After 4h 14m:
Plus/LCD: 10% battery left
Elite/OLED: 39% battery left
So we have a clean winner here - OLED
battery use - Chrome arm64 - dark background page
SDR, Brightness set to 50%
Chrome arm64, reddit.com website in dark mode + plugin doing hard reload every 5 seconds
After 8h 14m:
Plus/LCD: 4% battery left
Elite/OLED: 17% battery left
Good win for OLED
battery use - Chrome arm64 - light background page
SDR, Brightness set to 50%
Chrome arm64, nytimes.com website (it has white background) + plugin doing hard reload every 5 seconds
After 2h 18m:
Plus/LCD: 78% battery left
Elite/OLED: 79% battery left
Looks like there is almost no difference - so I stopped this test early
charging speed
I’m chargin one of Surfaces with 2021 Dell XPS17 (9700) 130W USB-C charger, and it’s faster than the MS provided charger: from 28% now it’s showing 1h 30m on MS one, and 53m on Dell one. If I remember correctly this Dell charger has limited “standardized” quick charging modes - definitely not for 130W.
conclusion for round 2
The only thing stopping me from the decision to just keep OLED one is this Media Player issue - when in full screen it’s more “choppy” after every operation - like play/pause/seek - or touching the screen which causes the controls to slide up/down. On Plus/LCD it’s all much smoother and freezes on HEVC 4K/HDR after seeking are much much shorter. I have to make sure that this is not a wider issue.

grain is visible on any lighter color solid space - especially white one
looking at news websites now - and in some places, if there is a color photo next to white background next to vertical scroll bar, there is a little of extra noise visible on white. it changes when scrolling - sometimes not visible, sometimes slightly visible - it's there when you look for it. But I don't think I will notice it without looking for it. I've tried to make a photo but because of moiré it's useless
but when playing videos the colors, contrast, blacks and HDR are much better on OLED
performance
in best performance mode, Geekbench 6
Plus/LCD: CPU 2445/13147, GPU 19856
Elite/OLED: CPU 2833/14348, GPU 19717
in recommended performance mode, Geekbench 6
Plus/LCD: CPU 2309/12045, 19073 GPU
Elite/OLED: CPU 2373/13122, 18983 GPU
strange performance/application issue standard Media Player on Elite/OLED machine when pausing/resuming/resizing video (especially on 4k hdr hevc) stutters/pauses for longer time (like 0.5 - 1 second) than on Plus/LCD machine. After that video play smoothly. Same video file, both machines fully updated, restarted, I don't understand it.
noise - under 100% load you have to put your ear next to the device to hear that it's even running
Windows on ARM - I'm surprised that even my electronic signature (dedicated software + USB reader + smartcard) works just fine. But VLC arm64 is still unstable and crashes sometimes. And many of VPN clients do not work
conclusion - looks like for my needs Windows on arm is finally ready - so I'll keep one of them. Still have to decide which one - currently I prefer the OLED one because movies look better and I don't really care about the grain. The plan is to use OLED one for next few days to confirm that

The original was posted on /r/surface by /u/Reddit_newguy24 on 2024-06-29 01:03:50+00:00. *** So, my daily driver is a Surface Pro 8. I took the dive and picked up a Surface Pro 11, and man, I am loving it as a former Surface Pro 8 owner. Now, I'm not too technical. I just do writing, and I don't game or use a lot of x64 apps, but my impressions are more about the hardware rather than the software.
- They improved the button layouts. On the Surface Pro 8, power is on the right and volume on the left. I got a lot of accidental turn ons when the thing is in my bag with the Surface Pro 8, none with Surface Pro 11 so far.
- They improved the port location. On Surface Pro 8, charger was on left, and USB-C also on the right. As a right handed person, that annoyed me. Now, on Surface Pro 11, the charger is on the right, and ports on the left! So easier to route cables at my desk.
- The old Type Cover keyboard used to "hide" the bottom of the screen on the Surface Pro 8. On the new Flex Keyboard with Surface Pro 11, this is no longer an issue.
- Microsoft rounded the keycaps on the new Flex Keyboard. It fits good with Windows 11, but the keycaps are smaller now.
- And speaking of the keyboard, the fact you don't have to "unclip" the keyboard from the screen to get the pen. This makes it soooo much easier. The pen is much easier to reach.
- The Standby time is incredible. I put it in my bag at 11AM, came home at 5PM and it was still at 100%.
All in all, this is worth it for me just because of those small changes! I'm impressed!

The tablet is fast, has good battery life and is very easy to use. But to get that speed and easy to use I had to used a waterdown, mobile version of the software I needed. I use mostly lightroom and Photoshop and even though the version of Photoshop for the iPad is great, the Lightroom was quite limited. It was nothing but the mobile version.
On the surface I'm now running a desktop version of Lightroom CC and a full version of Photoshop beta. I installed Lightroom classic but haven't here the opportunity to test it out yet.
Lightroom CC and Photoshop works perfectly, it runs better on battery than my Asus Z flow 13 did plugged in.
The surface pro 11 is now why he iPad pro should have been. If you are a photographer thinking about getting a new surface pro don't hesitate, you will be pleasantly surprised.

I read somewhere that a “Surface Pro 11 for business” is coming in the fall.
Here is what Perplexity had to say about this:
“There is a strong possibility that a Microsoft Surface Pro powered by Intel's Lunar Lake processors will be released. Intel's Lunar Lake CPUs are expected to be available by Q3 2024 and will be integrated into over 80 laptop designs, including those from major manufacturers like Microsoft[1][3][5]. These processors are designed to meet the AI performance requirements of Microsoft's new Copilot+ PCs, which suggests that a Surface Pro with Lunar Lake could be on the horizon, likely by late 2024 or early 2025[1][3].

I'm semi-obsessed with battery life and power draw. I typically do a series of tests when I get a new laptop and I always have the current power draw (in watts) displayed in my task tray. I also use the built powerfcg /batteryreport tool all the time.
The reviewers who have been running standard battery tests, only to end up claiming "Yeah battery life is seems a little better, but very close to Meteor Lake / Pheonix, so maybe it's not worth it" will be proven wrong.
They're essentially running synthetic long-life tests (12+ hour video playback) where the results vary dramatically based on other system components (like screen power draw) and small variations in testing conditions.
I can tell you with certainty that in real-world usage, the Snapdragon X Elite laptops will have more CONSISTENT battery runtimes of over 8 hours per charge.
I've been using the Slim 7x, and last night I watched a movie on Amazon Prime with an average power draw of 3.8w (estimated battery life of 18.5 hours), on a 14.5'' OLED screen running at 90Hz. This is something unheard of until now.
That's all I wanted to say. Enjoy your new laptops
