- Odd view of subscribed community - missing posts?
I'm not sure if this is something going wrong, or just how Mastodon works.
Anywho, when I go to Communities - Subscribed and click through to this one: https://lemmy.nz/c/rugby@sh.itjust.works
There are posts that I think are there that don't show up in that view, eg: https://lemmy.nz/post/1077020
The only reason I know that post exists is because it does show up if I just go to https://lemmy.nz/ so i'm guessing it shows in the Subscribed Posts section, but if it isn't there then i'd be missing the post entirely I guess.
- Page hangs when posting a reply sometimes
Am I just dumb or does this happen for other people?

- Warning from Malwarebytes about a compromised instance?
I really wish I knew more about this stuff, but every time I switch from Local to Subscribed Malwarebytes gives me a popup warning me that lemmy.world is compromised and blocked (even though I'm still seeing posts from communities there) but that's all it's telling me. Should I be avoiding that instance?

- Lemmy for NZ Accessibility Communities
Hey
I'm a developer that has a few accessibility clients at the moment.
Specifically, Spinal NZ are looking for a knowledge sharing/support platform that will fix some of Facebook Groups's problems, including:
- Unable to suitably categorise Posts (sub-group/topic type/region)
- Difficulty searching/filtering
- Posts ‘drop off’ the bottom (due to inability to filter)
- Continual hacking risk
- Platform controlled by off-shore corporate interests
I have an intuition that federated platforms such as lemmy may align to the needs of accessibly communities, given its openness, self governance etc.
I would host an instance for the community so that they can self-moderate and connect up to other instances that might align with their needs.
I was wondering if anyone would recommend using lemmy for this purpose, if there are other federated systems that might carry out the same goal?
- Too deep of a comment, or just a bug?
Not sure if this is something new with the update, but the above shows an endless loop of repeating the same comment rather than opening the next.
This crashes Jerboa, and appears the same on Desktop and Mobile Chrome browser.
- We are now running the latest Lemmy 0.18.3
The database migrations took a while which meant about 10 minutes of downtime between 9:09pm and 9:19pm NZT. But the site is now up and hopefully running OK. Let me know if you see any issues. I'm hoping this will lead to a more stable site, but one big issue still hasn't been resolved so I can't promise anything.
And since we're doing an announcement post, here's a couple of things to check out that I never officially announced:
-
Voyager (previously called wefwef) is a web app for Lemmy intended to resemble the Apollo reddit app. You can use any instance but we have our own hosted at voyager.lemmy.nz
-
mlmym is an alternate frontend intended to resemble the old reddit theme. As far as I can tell, this is specific to an instance, so will only work for people with a lemmy.nz account (but other instances have their own version, such as lemmy.world). You can access this frontend at old.lemmy.nz
These are both set to auto-update, so please let me know if an update breaks things because I can roll back to a previous version manually.
-
- is federation with lemmy.world working?
Hello.
I have a post I made to a group on lemmy.world that doesn't seem to be federating.
The group is !aphantasia@lemmy.world. The post can be found here https://lemmy.nz/post/322993 and the same one here https://lemmy.world/post/108808?scrollToComments=true
- PSA: Lemmy.world has been compromised
I'd avoid going directly to the site. There could be security issues, and you could get redirected to some "bad" places.
It should be OK to view their federated posts from lemmy.nz (i.e. where the URL starts with lemmy.nz), but be careful!
Potentially more info here: https://lemmy.nz/post/325142
- Is there any plan to de-federate from exploding-heads?
Most of the bigger instances seem to have done this, as it hosts mostly alt right content.

Does anyone know of a way to do this? Currently the only options are Subscribed, Local, and All, but it would be way better to choose the instance in 'Local'. All is a bit much to be able to find anything.
Like in https://lemmy.nz/communities being able to change which instance you are viewing communities from.
Also, there doesn't seem to be any option to sort lists of communities by comments/users/etc
- Plans for more specific location Communities (i.e. cities/towns etc.)?
Hi, keen to understand what the plans are for potentially creating town/city specific communities? Understand that while the user count is still growing, it may not make sense just yet but I'd be very keen to hopefully see c/chch at some stage. Apologies if I've missed this info elsewhere... 🤔
Edit OK, fully missed the fact that Auck. and Wel. already exist.
- Lemmy android client
What client, if any, do you guys use on your phone? I've been using Jerboa, but it has its problems so I'm wondering if there's a better option?
- Having trouble finding communities? Here's some tips.
I just joined the NZ lemmy here, because Lemmy.world was slow. This instance is much faster for me, but when searching for communities, many that I was subscribed to with my lemmyworld account didn't show in the search results.
I fixed this by manually finding it in the address bar, like this:
https://lemmy.nz/c/linux@lemmy.world
And this will work for all communities, just replacing the appropriate parts:
https://lemmy.nz/c/[communityname]@[instancename]
Then you can subscribe and it will show in your 'Subscribed to communities' on the main page. (sometimes I have to refresh for all to show up).
This might be a known issue at the moment, but I've only been on Lemmy for like 3 days so idk
- Join our Matrix chat
You may not be aware we have a Matrix chat room that anyone can join.
Quick start
Just want to join?
- Sign up for an account on mtrx.nz
- Download Element and log in
- Join the chatroom
What is Matrix?
Matrix is a chat platform. It is similar to Discord or Slack, if you're familiar with those, but Matrix is decentralised - similar to Lemmy.
Note that, in the same way there are multiple sites and multiple apps made by different people that you can use Lemmy with, there are also multiple sites and apps you can join Matrix with.
Why Matrix? (and not Discord, Slack, etc)
Matrix is very popular across Lemmy and the wider Fediverse, and it is for this reason we also use Matrix.
Where can I get an account?
As Matrix is decentralised, you can sign up on any instance, which will allow you to communicate with anyone on your own or any other instance.
As this is Lemmy.nz, it may be logical to sign up on mtrx.nz, but there are many others listed here.
I have an account, what next?
There are many different Matrix clients, but the most popular is Element, made by the same people that created the Matrix protocol. You can download it here. Also see the list of clients here.
Install it, log in, then go to this link to get the option to join the chatroom.

- Post on lemmy.world updated, not updated here?
I've created a bot on a stopdrinking community at lemmy.world, and due to a bug it posted the wrong day in the title. I've manually updated it by logging in as the bot on lemmy.world, which works fine, but when visiting the post on lemmy.nz it still shows the old title.
Lemmy.world post: https://lemmy.world/post/540936 "Copy" at lemmy.nz: https://lemmy.nz/post/159526 Notice that here the title shows "Saturday", instead of Sunday.
Is this a bug related to version 0.18?
- We are now running the latest version of Lemmy
Lemmy.nz is now running the latest version of Lemmy. This is a massive update. Some more discussion is available here.
Please let me know if anything isn't working right. Hopefully there are some previous bugs that are fixed.
Feel free to reply with tips or new things you've discovered about this version!
Two important things:
- 0.18.0 has breaking changes. If you use the mobile app Jerboa, this was updated to support 0.18.0 but no longer supports sites running the older version of Lemmy. If you use a different app, you might need to update it or even wait for an update to support 0.18.0
- your browser will probably cache the old version of the page and everything will break. If you're on a computer then shift+refresh button should fix it, otherwise try clearing the site data in the settings. On a phone it might be trickier, but I had success holding down the refresh button on Firefox for Android.
- Lemmy 0.18 released
This may impact lemmy.nz as well as it's a breaking change.

- Bot status not synced?
I'm working on a bug for a community on Lemmy.world and tested with my own account initially. This has marked my account as bot. On Lemmy.nz, I've unchecked that setting, and I'm no longer marked as bot on here.
However, when I view the post and my profile on lemmy.world, I'm still marked as bot? So it looks like profile settings like bot status may not be synced properly between instances?
See my profile on lemmy.world: https://lemmy.world/u/sylverstream@lemmy.nz And the post, in my comments it shows "bot" next to my username: https://lemmy.world/post/276715
And my profile on lemmy.nz: https://lemmy.nz/u/sylverstream The same post, and now I'm not marked as "bot": https://lemmy.nz/post/89563
- Can we post videos?
The Create Post page says that it can accept videos in the html, but when I just tried to upload an mp4 I got this error:
>SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data
Are we supposed to be able to upload videos here?
- Unable to log in on the mobile phone
I am trying to log in on my mobile phone using chrome (not an app). I see no oauth options there so I went. into my settings and set up a password and email address for the account. I tried to log in using those but it just hangs.
How do I use this on my mobile app? Is there a mobile app for IOS? If not why am I not able to log into the web site on the mobile app?

- Yet another community search issue
I almost never got search results when searching for communities. I was interested if searching for .nz worked like this post suggested, but no luck.
I've tried a bunch of different searches and realised a few things (screenshots here):
If I search for
.nz
,no.lastname.nz
,trees@no.lastname.nz
or!trees
in "Communities" I get no results. If I search for!trees@no.lastname.nz
, I still get no results, but the "No results" text never shows up.But... if I search for just
trees
in "Communities" it shows up. And the above searches work if I set the type to "All" or "Posts". That's OK if I've got the full name and instance, but if it's just a search term like.nz
, smaller communities get lost among the posts and comments. Is there something I'm doing wrong? It's behaving the same on my computer and phone, both Firefox. I've tried logging out and logging in (by the way, it just kept ignoring my logout request so I had to delete the cookie lemmy.nz had set).
- Search hack for lemmy.nz if you are on a larger instance
Do you feel that maybe you are losing sight of your lemmy.nz communities in all the noise of federation?
A good little search trick is to search as shown below. This will pull in all the threads on lemmy.nz (or no.lastname.nz) if you are on a larger lemmy instance:
- NZ Lemmy Communities
Not all NZ content is on this instance, so I thought it would be helpful to create a list of NZ focused communities (with some level of filtering) to help people find what they are looking for.
Links are handled a bit weird at the moment in Lemmy. These communities will be linked to the Lemmy.nz page for the community, to make it easier for our users to subscribe. If you’re on another instance, the page will give you a community address to copy to the search bar of your instance, e.g. “!support@lemmy.nz”. Copy this to the search form, click search, and wait 5-10 seconds for it to show up (quicker if someone else has searched before you).
Communities marked as (new) may not have much content yet.

- Consider hosting a medical cannabis community
The access to medical cannabis in NZ is very new and correct information is very hard to come by. Businesses are not allowed to advertise products, pharmacies are not allowed to advertise stock levels, etc etc.
Currently the de facto space for the medical cannabis community in NZ to disseminate correct information is through the MedicalCannabisNZ community on reddit.
It would be amazing if we had a fediverse equivalent.

- Lemmy.nz Code of Conduct [DRAFT]
Hi all, thanks for all the feedback today. I have put together this code of conduct as a starting point. We can of course modify it over time as needs change, but it would be good to hear if this is on point based on the discussion, or if it needs more work.
Based on suggestions in the feedback thread, I'm proposing this does not go in the sidebar itself. Instead, we keep the current rule "Don't be a dick", and link to this code of conduct. A simple, single rule; more clarity for those that need it.
Please let me know what you think:

- What to do if we cannot find an instance in the search?
I am trying to find a community I created on lemmy.tf but nothing shows up. I created it yesterday night. Community is called guineapigs@lemmy.tf
Could it be that lemmy.tf and lemmy.nz are not federated? Does it take time for a new community to populate to the different instances search.
