  • 'Wolf' seen in Forest of Dean chasing herd of deer into bracken

    > A woman out walking in the Forest of Dean was staggered to see a herd of deer being chased down by what she believes was a wolf. She had expected to maybe see a wild boar or even a polecat, yet not for one moment did she expect to see a wolf from just a few metres away and in broad daylight. > > ... > > "I decided I was going to go on up ahead on to Verderers trail. When I got near the track at the top, about ten deer were running from my left out of the woods onto the track, and in the middle of them there was a wolf." > > April could not believe all she was seeing. The deer and wolf were so close for a moment and she was able watch on as the deer made their way down the track with a wolf hot on their heels. > > April said: "The deer and wolf was about two metres away from me. They were running down the track and was at the top. > > "The wolf was bigger than the deer, and its colours really stood out. The fur of the wolf was grey and it had dark flecks towards it lower back and its tail was so bushy. > > "The deer and the wolf had run off and into the bracken. I was there just speechless until my partner had caught up with me. > > ... > > Keen to find out if there have been any more sightings of wolves in Gloucestershire, April contacted wildlife expert Frank Tunbridge. > > Frank, 76, from Podsmead said: "A walk in the woods in the Forest of Dean can be an interesting and enlightening experience where our native wildlife is concerned. Especially if they are lucky enough to encounter some of the varied bird species, deer, or even see a wild boar or two, if you happen to be in the right place at the right time. > > "l received an email from a lady outlining her experience of suddenly seeing a small herd of deer being hotly pursued by a wolf. After, when back home she checked out wolf images, and they confirmed that the physical shape and colouration matched the animal that she had seen. > > "Many people will discount her report, implying that it was probably a husky, or maybe a wolfdog. However over the years, I have had received quite had few similar reports from the Forest of Dean area, and in every case they were identified as displaying all the features and behaviour of a wolf. > > "Wolves are very efficient predators, secretive, and great wanderers, who can scent a human on the wind from over a mile away, so are not often seen. When one crosses your path, it is a sight that you will remember forever, similar to encountering a British big cat, or a lynx , which also exist in Gloucestershire, and throughout the UK. > > "Many exotic species, have now established themselves throughout wild places across the UK, after being dumped and released when the 1976 Dangerous Animals act came into force. The amount of prey species in the Forest of Dean, especially the over abundance of deer, rabbits, pheasants, and wild boar piglets being available, will fuel any large carnivore's diet for years."

Man who feared for his life after seeing big cat in Peak District was ‘possibly warned by black leopard’ - says expert

    > Earlier this week media across the country have reported a story of John Broomhead, 68, who spoke about a scary incident that happened to him when he was camping near Tansley in July 2022. > > It has been reported that after a barbecue with friends, John went to put out the fire when he heard what he described as a ‘rustling noise’. He said that soon after he saw a ‘huge black shadow ’ which was three or four times bigger than a regular cat. > > John said that he could see the 'bright yellow eyes’ of the creature coming towards him. It has been reported that John ‘threw himself into the caravan’ after the animal moved from 40 yards away to 20 yards from the man in ‘an instant’. John said that he ‘feared he could get killed’ and that the incident left him traumatised. > > Rick Minter, the host of the Big Cat Conversations podcast and author of Big Cats Facing Britain’s Wild Predators spoke to the Derbyshire Times to discuss the incident. > > Rick said: “I hope to be able to speak to John in person about this case, but from his reported comments it would seem he witnessed a black leopard, also called a black panther. > > “In their native lands, leopards can do a warning charge when provoked or threatened. This is possibly what John experienced. Leopards attack by surging low to the ground at blistering speed, so from what he described it is much more likely to have been a charge to warn-off John. > > “Black leopards are the main big cats described by people across Britain. When mated together two black adult leopards breed 100% black offspring. There are now a few DNA results to back up the UK witness reports.

Reported birth of rare white buffalo calf in Yellowstone park fulfills Lakota prophecy

    > The reported birth of a rare white buffalo in Yellowstone National Park fulfills a Lakota prophecy that portends better times, according to members of the American Indian tribe who cautioned that it’s also a signal that more must be done to protect the earth and its animals. > > “The birth of this calf is both a blessing and warning. We must do more,” said Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota and the Nakota Oyate in South Dakota, and the 19th keeper of the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman Pipe and Bundle. > > The birth of the sacred calf comes as after a severe winter in 2023 drove thousands of Yellowstone buffalo, also known as bison, to lower elevations. More than 1,500 were killed, sent to slaughter or transferred to tribes seeking to reclaim stewardship over an animal their ancestors lived alongside for millennia. > > ... > > For the Lakota, the birth of a white buffalo calf with a black nose, eyes and hooves is akin to the second coming of Jesus Christ, Looking Horse said. > > Lakota legend says about 2,000 years ago — when nothing was good, food was running out and bison were disappearing — White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared, presented a bowl pipe and a bundle to a tribal member, taught them how to pray and said that the pipe could be used to bring buffalo to the area for food. As she left, she turned into a white buffalo calf. > > “And some day when the times are hard again,” Looking Horse said in relating the legend, “I shall return and stand upon the earth as a white buffalo calf, black nose, black eyes, black hooves.” > > A similar white buffalo calf was born in Wisconsin in 1994 and was named Miracle, he said. > > Troy Heinert, the executive director of the South Dakota-based InterTribal Buffalo Council, said the calf in Braaten’s photos looks like a true white buffalo because it has a black nose, black hooves and dark eyes. > > “From the pictures I’ve seen, that calf seems to have those traits,” said Heinert, who is Lakota. An albino buffalo would have pink eyes. > > A naming ceremony has been held for the Yellowstone calf, Looking Horse said, though he declined to reveal the name. A ceremony celebrating the calf’s birth is set for June 26 at the Buffalo Field Campaign headquarters in West Yellowstone. > > ... > > Heinert sees the calf’s birth as a reminder “that we need to live in a good way and treat others with respect.” > > “I hope that calf is safe and gonna live its best life in Yellowstone National Park, exactly where it was designed to be,” Heinert said.

    > The Bat Beast of Kent, sometimes referred to as the ‘Saltwood Mystery’, is often considered to be an extraterrestrial sighting. Let’s begin with the story as it is roughly retold today. > >> November 16th, 1963, Four teenagers were making their way home from a party through Sandling Lane. Something unusual in the sky caught their attention: a golden oval shaped orb, seemingly a few metres in diameter. The object was intensely bright, they began to run from it, and it followed them, before returning back to its original position, it then slowly descended behind some trees. Curious about what it might have been, the boys headed to where they thought the object had ‘Landed’, but all was now dark. Soon they heard some rustling and felt a change in the air to cold and ‘charged like static electricity’, they looked towards the sound to see a hairy figure, around 5 feet tall, headless, with bat-like wings and webbed feet shambling out of the trees. > > ... > > It seems reasonable to think that there was no evidence of a deliberate hoax, there is some corroboration from the pub landlord that the original group were indeed spooked by the encounter, and there is a fair amount of consistency between the reports from the three boys. While additional sightings of the figure can be questioned as influenced by previous reports or even fabricated, there do appear to be some kind of unusual lights appearing with some frequency in the area, which may have various explanations, although none confirmed.

But recent research has found that support for them exists regardless of educational level or income. Some of the most privileged people in U.S. society hold deeply conspiratorial beliefs, as do sports fans, yogis and video game enthusiasts. > > While some many say that believing in UFOs or Bigfoot may not be that big of a problem, these ideas can lead to real-world harms. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these influencers became popular by suggesting that they had “sacred” or “secret” knowledge on how to defeat the virus. > > It’s one way people can go from embracing seemingly harmless ideas, like Bigfoot, to becoming open to more radical beliefs like the Great Replacement Theory, which is the conspiracy theory that illegal immigrants are colluding with Democrats to change the racial demographics of America and, in doing so, shape future elections. > > The intersection of politics and alternative beliefs is not a recent phenomenon. > > Some of these beliefs, like the imaginary continent of Atlantis, were used by the Nazi party to create a link to a mythical pure race. Hypotheses for such phenomena tend to fall into two classes: a conventional terrestrial explanation (e.g., human-made drones), or an extraterrestrial explanation (i.e., advanced civilizations from elsewhere in the cosmos). > > However, there is also a third minority class of hypothesis: an unconventional terrestrial explanation, outside the prevailing consensus view of life and the universe. This is the “ultraterrestrial” hypothesis, which includes – but is not limited to – the “interdimensional” hypothesis, namely the highly speculative notion that UAP may reflect activities of beings from other dimensions that coexist alongside our own. > > Such hypotheses may rightly be regarded with scepticism by most scientists. However, this article suggests they nevertheless should not be ruled out, and deserve serious consideration in a spirit of epistemic humility and openness.

Pope's new rules to stop Del Boy-style chancers cashing in on 'fake miracles'

    > Pope Francis wants to curb a surge in bogus “spiritual encounters”, such as the one in classic Only Fools And Horses episode The Miracle Of Peckham. > > The Pontiff is urging Catholics to exercise “extreme prudence” over reported spiritual sightings. The 1986 Only Fools episode saw Del, played by Sir David Jason, make money thanks to a Virgin Mary statue “crying”. > > But it happened because the church roof had a leak. > > Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, who is in charge of the church’s rules department, said it was “finalising a new text with clear guidelines”. The guide is due to be released tomorrow (May 17). > > As well as spiritual encounters, the pope is also expected to speak about alien life forms. > > The move to hold the press conference has caused ripples in the alien community, as one like this hasn't been held since February 1978.

www.nwemail.co.uk 'The Beast of Cumbria' - Big cat DNA confirmed to be on sheep carcass

Big cat DNA has been discovered on a sheep carcass in Cumbria.

    > Locals have long speculated as to whether the so-called 'Beast of Cumbria' is just one or several big cats that slink in the shadows of the countryside. Investigators have now obtained a vital piece of evidence to support the presence of at least one recently active in the county. > > Last year Sharon Larkin-Snowden, an experienced Cumbrian big cat investigator, came upon a sheep carcass and saw what she described as a black panther close by. > > After following up many big cat reports, she has discovered that deer and sheep carcasses predated by the big felines tend to be quite clinically consumed and neatly filleted. > > They did not reveal the exact location of the carcass to due trust with the landowners. > > Sharon said: "The combination of seeing the cat near the carcass area, and the carcass ticking boxes for what I’d expect from a big cat’s involvement, made me even more suspicious that this was potential evidence. > > "I spoke with local farmers too and they felt there had been a big cat around the area recently". She passed three swabs to expert and producer of Big Cat Conversations podcast Rick Minter who sent the samples to a specialist lab at the University of Warwick. > > The university's School of Life Sciences centre offers a pioneering DNA analysis service utilised by many ecological consultancies, private individuals and wildlife enthusiasts. > > The team, led by Professor Robin Allaby, tested the swabs and found that one indicated a panthera result, meaning it is from the genus of big cats, with two yielding fox DNA. > > Professor Allaby said: "The DNA sequence is a short segment from the mitochondrion which is often used to distinguish different species of animal. > > "The section we have sequenced is distinct to the group Panthera, which includes all the big cats - lions, tigers, panthers, leopards. > > "There was only a very small amount of DNA present, which again is not surprising. So we need more data from more samples to pin it down to a specific species." > > ... > > The latest evidence comes after a visit by Sky TV for Hold the Front Page with comedians Nish Kumar and Josh Widdicombe investigating big cat sightings in Cumbria. > > Rick added: "It was exciting to help them out with their search for evidence and witness stories." "We’re just frustrated we couldn’t get a positive DNA sample when they visited in September. > > "But they spurred us on so when Sharon saw the big cat later in the Autumn, I felt another test might be worth it. > > "This is a good example of Citizen Science at work, led by Sharon for big cats in Cumbria, along with her Facebook page on the topic."

  • Top senators believe the US secretly recovered UFOs

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/15213368

    > Has the U.S. government secretly retrieved exotic craft of “non-human” origin? Newly declassified documents, along with extraordinary legislation, illustrate how two successive Democratic Senate majority leaders appear to have believed so. > > Notably, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and the late Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) were not alone in their focus on UFOs. The Democratic heavyweights received critical support and encouragement from a bipartisan group of high-profile senators over the years, including former fighter pilot and famed astronaut John Glenn (D-Ohio); Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who observed a UFO as a World War II pilot; Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), then-chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense; 2008 GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.); Senate Intelligence Vice Chairman Marco Rubio (R-Fla.); Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.). > > In late 2011, for example, the top scientist at the Department of Homeland Security met with Lieberman, then chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and Reid to discuss the establishment of an ultra-secret UFO program. > > As outlined in remarkable detail in newly released documents, the intent of the proposed program was to “gain access to and inventory” UFOs secretly under “investigation in National Laboratories, government organizations and/or contractors.” > > From there, the program would engage in “laboratory experimentation” and “scientific investigation” to foster “technology exploitation” of the recovered materials. > > In short, Reid and Lieberman were advocating, “with some sense of urgency,” for the establishment of a formal UFO reverse-engineering program.

    > Is the Mongolian Death Worm Real? > > Some say the true death worm has already been found—slithering beneath the sands of the Gobi. > >  It’s a particularly implausible cryptid, supposedly growing up to six feet long, spitting acid poison that rapidly corrodes anything and kills on contact, and possibly shooting electricity. And yet, the worm has never left any physical evidence. The mystery of its existence was also seemingly solved in 1983 when a Soviet scientist demonstrated that the “worm” likely evolved from legends around a harmless local snake, the Tartar sand boa. > > The worm was sausage-like, mostly subterranean but would surface for food or following rains, and incredibly deadly. If you saw it, you kept your distance or ran. > > In some stories, the worm is only about a foot long. In others, it’s man-sized. It sweeps across the sands like a snake, inches like a caterpillar, or (in one tale) sprouts wings from its butt and flies. It’s white-gray, turning red when perturbed. Or scaly and brown. Or fleshy and blood-red. > > The effort monster hunters pour into searching for a seemingly debunked beast may baffle outsiders. But it reflects two simple truths: (1) A good cryptid is more than a creature, so you can never catch or debunk it. (2) The hunt is often less about finding a monster, and more about the thrill of nature and exploring the unknown.

www.newscientist.com Dozens of stars show signs of hosting advanced alien civilisations

Sufficiently advanced aliens would be able to capture vast quantities of energy from their star using a massive structure called a Dyson sphere. Such a device would give off an infrared heat signature - and astronomers have just spotted 60 stars that seem to match

Dozens of stars show signs of hosting advanced alien civilisations

    > Two surveys of millions of stars in our galaxy have revealed mysterious spikes in infrared heat coming from dozens of them. Astronomers say this could be evidence for alien civilisations harnessing energy from their stars by using a vast construction known as a Dyson sphere – although they can’t fully rule out more mundane explanations. > > To search for potential Dyson spheres, two teams of astronomers, one led by Matías Suazo at Uppsala University in Sweden and the other by Gaby Contardo at the International School for Advanced Studies in Italy, combined data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite – which is mapping the position and motion of billions of stars in our galaxy – with infrared survey results from ground and space telescopes. > > Each team analysed the same 5 million stars from the combined datasets, and both turned up signs of excess infrared heat that couldn’t be explained by known natural processes. “The most fascinating explanation could be actual Dyson spheres,” says Suazo. > > His team spotted strange signals at seven red dwarfs within 900 light-years of Earth. These stars are smaller and dimmer than our sun, but appeared up to 60 times brighter in infrared than expected. This excess would have been caused by something with a temperature of up to 400°C, consistent with what we might expect for a Dyson sphere. Up to 16 per cent of each star would have to be obscured to account for the signal, meaning it would more likely be a variant of the idea called a Dyson swarm – a collection of large satellites orbiting a star to collect energy – if the cause is truly of artificial origin. “This isn’t like a single solid shell around the star,” says team member Jason Wright at Pennsylvania State University. > > Contardo’s results are broader, with 53 candidates found among larger stars, including some sun-like stars, at distances of up to 6500 light years from Earth. “Both sets of candidates are interesting,” she says, though inconclusive. “You need follow-up observations to confirm anything.” > > One natural explanation that could mimic the properties of a Dyson sphere is that the stars are surrounded by hot, planet-forming debris disks, but most of the stars found by both teams appear to be too old for this. Another possibility is that each star could coincidentally be positioned in front of a distant galaxy giving off an infrared glow. > > The infrared signals could also result from some unknown natural process. “It might be something that happens very rarely, like if two planets collide and produce an enormous amount of material,” says David Hogg at New York University, who worked with Contardo. “I think it’s most likely to be a natural phenomenon.”

'Big cat' spotted by motorist after pulling into layby

    > A motorist was left gobsmacked after he caught sight of what appeared to be a 'panther-like' big cat in a field. Geoff Thompson, 37, was driving between Great Witley and Martley, Worcestershire, when he had his encounter. > > The classic car aficionado and YouTuber had pulled over to snap some shots of his cherished Renault 10 when he noticed an unusual presence in the distance on Sunday (April 14). Upon closer inspection, he discovered the creature's footprints and is convinced it was a panther. > > Geoff, from Worcester, said: "I just went out for a sunny drive - I noticed it as I started photographing my car. I think it was a panther." > > Captured in a 24-second clip on his mobile, Geoff can be heard questioning, "What the heck is that animal? ! ". Determined to gather evidence, Geoff, who runs the YouTube channel Geoff Buys Cars, ventured into the field to track down the mysterious animal and its tracks. > > ... > > Geoff, who has been fascinated by big cats since childhood, found the encounter quite amusing, saying: "Big cats have always been a bit of an obsession, fascination of mine since I was a kid so to actually see something odd while out and about is pretty funny in my book." > > He got in touch with big cat researcher and filmmaker, Tim Whittard, who produced the award-winning documentary ‘Panthera Britannia Declassified’, which claims to prove that big cats are living in wilderness of rural Britain. > > Tim, 38, of Gloucester, shared the video with other experts. He explained: “I have had some of my colleagues look over it and while we can't definitively say it was a big cat, the possibility remains on the table. > > ''It absolutely could have been a big cat. Consensus seems to suggest that the majority of the tracks photographed are more likely to be dog than anything else, so whilst the tracks do not yield positive proof, the video of the sighting itself is very organic, very natural and we can't rule out a cat.

KONA BLUE: Top-Secret Government Program To Investigate “Human Consciousness Anomalies” Doesn’t Exist, New Report Says

    > No, the United States government does not have alien bodies hiding somewhere, nor has it ever tried to reverse-engineer flying saucers. Really. > > That’s one of the main stances that the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), an organization created in 2022 to resolve sightings of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), asserts in a report published Friday. > > ... > > The report makes several assertions, including a debunking of KONA BLUE. > > KONA BLUE, as the report explains, was allegedly a top-secret program to investigate “human consciousness anomalies,” retrieve and exploit “non-human biologics,” and reverse engineer any alien craft they found. > > “It is critical to note that no extraterrestrial craft or bodies were ever collected — this material was only assumed to exist by KONA BLUE advocates and its anticipated contract Performers,” the report authors emphasized. > > As the authors do throughout the report, they take an instance of a program and explain where the pseudoscience claims may be emerging. In the case of KONA BLUE, the contract for a $22 million program, greenlit in 2008 to assess aerospace threats on the horizon — and which was never explicitly tasked with researching UFOs — was awarded to a private sector organization. But the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency canceled it in 2012, “due to lack of merit and the utility of the deliverables,” though this didn’t stop non-government program advocates, who renamed the proposal as KONA BLUE, from seeking to investigate paranormal activity.

Missed this in March but the report is now available.

There, Kalih found a strand of hair snagged on a plantation fence that the unknown creature was believed to have jumped over. She also recorded footprints and claw marks that she thought resembled those of a tiger. > > ... > > The matter eventually landed at BRIN, where a team of researchers ran genetic analyses to compare the single strand of hair with known samples of other tiger subspecies, such as the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and a nearly century-old Javan tiger pelt kept at a museum in the West Java city of Bogor. > > “After going through various process of laboratory tests, the results showed that the hair sample had 97.8% similarities to the Javan tiger,” Wirdateti, a researcher with BRIN’s Biosystemic and Evolutionary Research Center, said at an online discussion hosted by Mongabay Indonesia on March 28. > > The discussion centered on a study published March 21 in the journal Oryx in which Wirdateti and colleagues presented their findings that suggested that the long-extinct Javan tiger may somehow—miraculously—still be prowling parts of one of the most densely populated islands on Earth. > > Their testing compared the Sukabumi hair sample with hair from the museum specimen collected in 1930, as well as with other tigers, Javan leopards, and several sequences from GenBank, a publicly accessible database of genetic sequences overseen by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. > > The study noted that the supposed tiger hair had a sequence similarity of 97.06% with Sumatran tigers and 96.87% with Bengal tigers. Strange lights, tropical heatwaves and a grinning dwarf: Noah Angell has spent years collecting stories from spooked staff

‘My advice? Pray before you enter’: The ghost hunter investigating the British Museum

    > Ghosts of the British Museum documents the many cases that Angell, a 43-year-old American artist, has collected over seven years interviewing employees of the Bloomsbury institution. From a searing heat that descended upon the Mexico gallery, and 200-year-old oak doors opening by themselves, to guards flung to the ground by a mysterious force, there have been unexplained incidents throughout the museum. The Sutton Hoo gallery is something of a hotspot. It contains the magnificent hoard of treasures from the Anglo-Saxon ship burial that was unearthed from a field in Suffolk in 1939. Angell heard that the landowner, Edith Pretty, had been drawn to investigate the earth mounds on her property because she had seen flaming torchlight around them at night – a story that he later confirmed with a researcher who had worked on the Sutton Hoo find. > > One day, Angell invited Patsy, a psychic medium, to tour the museum with him. In an area of intense paranormal activity, Patsy began talking in a low voice about exhibits that “shouldn’t have been moved”: medieval Christian relics that had been removed to make way for a new Islamic gallery. She described angry forces from a time when Christendom engaged in bloody crusades to recapture Jerusalem. “You’ve replaced Christianity,” she said, “you have replaced it with something that’s a devil to us.” > > ... > > Some employees are convinced that the hauntings are related to people who died in the museum or who worked there for a long time and have passed away. Yet many, Angell discovered, believe that the objects themselves retain some kind of imprint from their past. > > The British Museum, Angell suggests, is different from most places that we associate with hauntings. “We talk about haunted pubs or haunted houses. But inside the British Museum, you have the kingdom of Benin, you have significant portions of the Parthenon, of the Karnak temple.” These exhibits, Angell believes, blur the line between an artefact and where it was taken from. In the book, he writes about how he sees the museum as a black hole, a void that “captures other times within it”. > > “You can’t convince me that these things inside the British Museum are tamed,” Angell says. “By putting them in a glass case or numbering the rooms that they’re in, you don’t zap the power of a monument that is 5,000 years old and had a kind of continuous ritual function. I don’t believe that all that just evaporates.” > > ... > > As for those who do still want to visit, Angell warns them to step lightly – some artefacts, he notes, in the culture they come from, are “not meant to be seen by anyone, aside from certain people who are initiated… A lot of the things I have seen in the British Museum, I don’t think they are really meant for my eyes. > > “I do pray before I go in there,” he admits, “because you are there with a lot of powerful stuff that you don’t understand very well… I felt I had to be respectful. I continuously asked for safe passage. I wouldn’t go into the British Museum without taking appropriate precautions.”

Fears UK Bigfoot stalking national park with huge clue creature 'can't be human'

    > Britain's very own Bigfoot may be roaming one of our national parks, terrified locals say. > > Fishermen making late-night visits to an idyllic lake in South Downs have revealed that a "growling" creature patrols the area and has been spotted escaping down a "dangerous" hill. "No human" would dare venture the incline, with anglers concluding the strange noises and bumps in the night are the result of an elusive creature. > > Members of the Cryptid and Paranormal Investigations group on Facebook observed multiple instances of close calls with a creature so evil that it made the fishermen up sticks and depart straight away, The Daily Star reports. > > Mike Brown claimed: "I felt incredibly on edge and it was a feeling I can honestly say I had never experienced before or since. It really was as if something was watching me and I was not welcome." > > Fellow group member Michael Brindle says he experienced a similar feeling when fishing on the banks of the UK's national park, adding he encountered "something large running on what I think was two legs on the opposite bank in the darkness". Those unnerving stomps in the wilderness prompted Michael to pack up and scarper after he felt "the hairs on my arms" stand up. "I was dozing on my chair next to the rods when I was woken by a loud growl from the opposite bank," he said. > > ... > > While neither man saw the creature, they remain convinced it was not a prank or woodland creature. "I hope to never hear it again," Michael added.

Why do people believe in aliens and UFOs? We asked a psychologist his views on the paranormal

    > Psychologist Chris French's latest book is called The Science of Weird S*t and explores these very questions. > > We got the chance to speak to Chris about his research into strange phenomena to get a psychologist's view on what makes people believe in UFOs and alien contact. > > ... > > It varies from survey to survey, but you will typically find about a third of people say they believe that aliens have visited the Earth. > > And again it varies, but certainly 10%, 15% say they have actually seen a UFO. > > Now that raises the question: "what do you mean by UFO?" > > Do you literally mean an unidentified object in the sky? Well, fine, I don't have a problem with that. > > We can all look up into the sky and not know what we're looking at. > > But of course, it's kind of quite interesting that we automatically these days equate UFO with ET, and that's a huge inferential leap. > > When you look back historically, 1947 was a golden year. That was the year that the phrase 'flying saucer' entered the English language. > > It was the year of the Roswell UFO incident. > > And there was a series of what they called UFO flaps at the time, where lots of people were reporting seeing things up in the sky. > > But the surveys that were carried out, when they were asking the general public what they thought this phenomenon was, often didn't even include ET as an option. > > It wasn't part of consciousness then: it was things like Soviet military technology, a meteorological phenomenon, a celestial phenomenon, whatever else it may be.
