- Apple iPad Mini 6 - totally broken keyboard split layout 🥺
I really love and regularly use a split keyboard.
I’ve been hoping to fix these bugs for many years, for a very long time. The bug has been reported many times by me and other suffering users. No changes in all these years.

- How do you disable focus/do not disturb mode?
I'm trying not to just resist everything new in mac OS right away, but this whole focus concept and do not disturb mode turning on without me asking it to and not having any option to disable it is just too much. I can imagine maybe using this in some exceptional circumstances where it actually occurred to me to do so, but I definitely want it to be a conscious decision.
In the preferences I could find no off switch. I tried setting it to only turn on when I'm in Antarctica and off when I'm not but it didn't seem to actually work as the little moon icon remained there even after this. I also tried to scheduling it to operate in a one minute window but even after that window elapsed it continued to be in 'do not disturb mode'. I don't tend to get a whole lot of notifications nor rely on them much but frankly the idea that they're being suppressed not under direction from me is infuriating and I don't want that to happen.

- PSA: There is a loophole in the iOS 17.3 implementation of "stolen device protection" (17.4 beta seems to fix it)
cross-posted from: https://hexbear.net/post/1701378
> Stolen device protection on iOS 17.3 will allow disabling stolen device protection (as well as resetting face/touch ID) with only the passcode after a few failed face/touch ID authentication attempts. iOS 17.4 beta, which is currently only available to developers, fixes this so you absolutely need to pass biometric authentication to change these settings. If this feature is important to you, you may want to update to 17.4.

- AirPods Max buy now?
Hi. In Germany, AirPods Max cost around 570€ including VAT. You really can't get them any cheaper. I recently bought a used one for 405€ from a reputable commercial seller with warranty. I'm sure that Apple will release the second gen APM this year. Do you think I can resell mine for at least 300€ in a year? Should I return it and wait for the new release?

- Audio balance sometimes changes
Hey all! I think at one point I changed the balance of my audio output (an earbud was a little dead so I shifted the amount of sound coming out of the left and right to compensate). I’ve long since gotten a new pair of headphones but sometimes I connect them and the balance has reverted back! It drives me bananas (I’m the sort of person who must turn on the mono sound accessibility feature bc stereo effects make me dizzy) and I have no idea if it’s something I’m doing to trigger the behavior or if I’m stuck with it until this computer dies.
Anyone else experiencing this or have any ideas about how to fix it?
- Apple delivery drivers stole my phone
I ordered an iPhone on Black Friday and had their courier deliver it to me. They hired one of the Spark Drivers (Walmart owned) to deliver it. They said it was delivered and never showed up. Then Apple refused to do anything about it and their official response after hours of calling was, “call the police.” So I filed a police report (that went nowhere) and told my credit card to reject the charge.
Don’t use this service.
- Apple Music: What happened to the auto-generated album art tiles?
With one of the recent iOS updates, it seems like they changed playlist images. I really liked having the 4 album covers so I could get a sense of what the playlist sounds like.
Now newly-created playlists default to a plain image. You can edit the playlist to select from other patterns, but there's no option for the old, tiled style. Is there any workaround to get it back?
- Can you prevent the lockout screen from occurring during display sleep when streaming to chromecast?
On my MBP, if I'm streaming something to the chromecast for any appreciable length of time the display sleeps. That's not a bad thing, it's supposed to do that, but the trouble is, if I want to pause playback, it's not a matter of simply hitting the pause key to immediately pause. This is because pressing any key wakes up the display and presents the login prompt.
To pause, I have correctly type in my password, and then in the appropriate app hit the pause button. This process takes several seconds and if I needed to pause because of wanting to freeze on something I'm viewing, or because something around me is happening that demands immediate halt to playback for me to attend to it, then this lag between the decision to pause and when I've finally paused is really just way too long. To make it worse, if I'm streaming youtube and this happens, the playback controls presented via the browser on the video page stop controlling the chromecast stream, the pause key does nothing. I can eventually pause (though not seek) via the player notification controls but it's not ideal.
- Affordable MacBook for building a Flutter application
Hi guys,
I'm currently building a mobile application using Flutter. Until now my target platform was Android but I'd like to build and publish it for iOS as well. For this I need access to macOS environment, both to build the application and to test it in iOS Simulator. Please note that I don't intend to actually develop on this machine.
I'm considering a few options like running macOS VM on my machine (no luck so far) or using some kind of cloud VM. The most obvious option is to just buy a Mac of course. However, I really don't want to spend a lot on this and Apple computers aren't exactly known for being affordable. Here's my question: which MacBook would you recommend to buy used just for the purposes I listed above?
I tried googling this of course but it's really hard for me to find any useful advice. Please note that I have no knowledge about Apple devices and ecosystem whatsoever, I never used any of them.
- Mac Sales are Downwww.theverge.com Apple’s iPhone lineup is selling well, but the Mac is in a serious rough patch
Mac revenue was down 34 percent year over year.
Mac sales are down.
I’m really not surprised. They are just a bit too expensive once you start upgrading the storage and ram.
I have been holding out on buying a Mac since the M2 was rumored to come out.
I keep hoping that the base model will have a larger amount of storage and ram, but it does not.
They keep selling faster processors, but I do not need that, I need more storage and I’d like more ram.
At this point, I’m just going to buy a used M1 air. If Apple had 512 and 26 standard on the base air, I’d pickup a new one today.
Do you disagree? What can Apple do to increase Mac sales?
- New EarPods question
Just a heads up, I'm not an apple user, it never clicked with me but this might be the best spot to get an answer for my specific use case. What I do like was their old 3.5 mm jack earphones, but the playback controls never worked right on my android phone, probably because of the wiring layout or some DRM screwery. I've been looking to buy a second pair of them as my primary one has been confiscated by my better half, and I saw that they put out a USB-C version of those.
If any one has those headphones, can you test them out on an android device, or if you are sure can comment if the volume and playback controls work outside Apple's devices or are they locked to just their devices? I didn't see that info in any reviews and would know that bit of info before buying them blind.

- New iPhone login prompts
Hey everyone,
I got a new iPhone 15 Pro, and I keep getting prompts to login to an old old old Apple ID that as far as I can tell, doesn't exist anymore. No password is accepted and when it goes to be reset, I get the notification that "This Apple ID is not valid or not supported". I know it did exist at one point, though I'm not sure it was before everything got converted to the Apple ID system, and as far as I know, there's nothing on the phone that requires this Apple ID, no music apps or anything. Anyone know how I can fix this?

- All HomeKit Accessories Not Responding After Adding HomePods and Deleting Second Home
Recently bought a pair of HomePod minis and added them to my setup. Previously, my Apple TV was the hub. After I added the HomePods, everything worked fine for about a day and now nothing is responding. I tried removing everything, including the HomePods, and readding them to My Home, and that didn't work. Everything is up to date. In the process of configuring the HomePods, I ended up creating a new Home that I didn't end up using, and so I deleted it, and that's when my troubles began. Any advice on how to fix?

- Is there a way to remove one email from a conversation thread and give it it's own thread?
I was sent an email to someone as part of an ongoing thread of emails in a conversation.
I drafted a reply, but felt a bit unsure so I sent it to someone I trust for them to look at first. Initially, the draft had been made by hitting the reply button to the original sender, but I removed them from the to: field and very thoroughly checked they were indeed removed before sending my potential response to this third party. The 3rd party replied to me and for a second my heart stopped because their reply was in the same conversation thread and it looked a lot like the whole exchange between them and myself was now broadcast to the very person I was trying to carefully word my reply to. Making it look even more like that was the case, was that the signature of the person who sent me the original I wanted to reply to was at the bottom of the third party's response to me along with their comments. What seems to have happened is that because I pressed the 'reply' button, despite changing the sender, it still included the whole thread of emails until that point. Which makes sense but was very much not what I was expecting since I don't recall seeing that there in the email before sending it to the 3rd party. I suppose it must have been.
Anyway, it seems to have been alright, there's no trace I can find that the exchange between myself and the third party has made its way back to the person that sent me the messages in the first place. But it's very messy and scary that this, to my mind, separate, conversation thread is now all wrapped in to the same one. It seems like begging for trouble even if I dodged it this time. It's my fault for making it a reply instead of a separately composed message to the 3rd party, but can I manually move those messages out of the thread in mail so I don't see them there in future?
- Is there any way to copy the file path of a selected item in Finder without the use of the mouse?
After years of using MacOS I somehow only just now became aware you even could copy the filepath at all (outside of dragging in to terminal which is just stupid) so I'm very happy to discover that, but the thing is, for the most part the reason I want to do this is for easy navigation of a file browser by copying paths from one window or tab to another, especially when I have an item selected in an open file browser window and need to specify in a file browser prompt where to save something.
In those instances on Windows for example, I will press the F4 key to select the text field of the address bar in explorer and copy the parent directory path of an item. If I really need it I can get the exact path of the item itself without the mouse too . While I'm super glad I can now approach this usefulness in Finder, the mouse totally interrupts the flow and begins to make the increased efficiency from copying paths only marginally better than just clicking through folder trees since you stop what you're doing and move hands to the mouse already anyway at that point. I'd love to just immediately copy the current path I'm in into a Finder window and use the cmd+shift+G option in another window or prompt to go the same place. The second half of that operation is easy enough, but getting the path on to the clipboard isn't because of needing the mouse.
- What happened to the cmd + return shortcut to send a message in Mac OS Mail?
I feel like an old grandpa trying to use a computer, but I legit can't find this anywhere and I used to use it often.
If I'm composing a message, when I'm done, I used to press cmd+return to send the message. One of many little QOL things for me that involve using the keyboard rather than the mouse wherever possible or practical. The closest reference I've been able to find as a replacement is cmd+shift+D to "send emails" which is both less convenient and also a bit vague. I want to send this email, as in the one I'm composing or which has window focus right now. Is 'send emails' all emails? Like all open windows if you've got a couple of drafts on the go? All drafts including those that aren't open as well?
Is there a new key command for what cmd+return used to do?

- Contacts Image privacy
Hi all. I was wondering how iOS handles Contacts images, when it comes to encryption. It would be simpler without ADP (Advanced Data Protection), but I have it enabled.
ADP end-to-end encrypts your images, but contacts still uses the legacy (less private) encryption methods. So what happens with the photo tied to the Contact? Is it encrypted, or not? I’d assume as it’s Contact data, it gets treated as part of everything else the Contact holds. I’d just like to know for certain, hence this post. Bonus points if you can provide a source.
