It is worth noting that you can already beat meat on price with things like beans, lentils, chickpeas, etc. Plant-based meats specifically are just more expensive because they're building the economies of scale and putting some of their research costs into the price. Plant-based meats are also already cheaper than animal meats in some parts of the world

But yes, once that becomes much prevalent, sales will likely increase substantially

As a related note: this is also encouraging that a number of coffee chains are now dropping their non-dairy milk up charges after pressure from activists. Once they got Starbucks to do so, it's spread to tons of chains. Even the worst plant milks are way better across all environmental metrics compared to dairy (yes even water weighted by scarcity), so it's going to be good for the environment

It becoming financially convenient was a result of decades of intentional policy. It's now snowballing once it got there

It would have taken far longer to get here without government involvement if applications like space travel were the only reasons for earlier research and manufacturing

Not that pausing this is anything less than insane, but note that SCOTUS has recently given administrative stays and then ruled against Trump after that. Nothing is a given either way

The fight isn't over until it's over. Don't read this news and give in the doom and cynicism Trump wants us all to have. We can still fight back, and people are still fighting. 5 million were on the street on Saturday. There's another nationwide 50501 protest on April 19th

Even if any did, they would be part of voters abroad (US citizens can vote by mail if living outside the country) who are an even bluer voting block. If memory serves me right, it's on the order of like D+60 overall

This was the fourth nationwide 50501 protest day and it won't be the last. There's already another nationwide 50501 protest being planned for April 19th!

Note that this wasn't even the only protest. This was one of 1400+ protests across the country. Depending on the estimate you look at, there were around 5.2 million people protesting yesterday

And the conservative candidate still lost by 10 points despite that

Check my post history*. I post about them quite frequently here on Lemmy. They still get less attention here even. The sorting algorithms like active boost posts with more engagement which photos of protests often don't get until they are truly enormous

For instance, here was one large protest a month ago in the Iowa Statehouse that I had posted about

So social media posts about protests often get lost in the sea of bad news and news outlets are downplaying them severely. That's why few people were hearing about them

Other estimates put it at ~5.2 million. The 3 million estimates appear to be excluding the west coast

That's around 1.6% of the US population which is pretty large for a protest. This isn't the first nationwide protest nor will it be the last. Next date planned for 50501 is April 19th

This wasn't the first nationwide protest of his second term nor will it be the last. This was the 4th nationwide 50501 protest. Plus other movement like Tesla Takedown had large nationwide protests prior too. It's just that now it's gotten large enough that the media can no longer ignore it. It took time to get here. Each protest keeps getting larger than the last

Millions of people have just been put in touch with the various local groups organizing these protests. Usually at these protests they'll be people going around giving info, sigining people up for mailing lists, etc. That's a good part of how each protest gets bigger

Besides just protests, that will enable much more action and more rapid action in the future. For instance Indivisible does tons of work on directed pressure of congress and local leaders. 50501 organized smaller boycotts in the past when the crowds were smaller. Now they can organize boycotts more with more effect

This also wasn't even the only protest in Ohio! Nationwide there were over 1,400 locations protesting with a total turnout estimated in the millions

Then you'll really like knowing that some groups are estimating that over 5 million protested across the US in around 1400 locations

If you want to help in Canada, there are also Tesla Takedown protests growing there. That and make sure to vote in your upcoming elections to avoid having the same senario play out in Canada that happened in the US

Edit: and to clarify, the Tesla Takedown protests are global, not limited to the US and Canada. It's growing in Europe and elsewhere too
