Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war'
  • This is true. Russia saber rattling about using nuclear weapons, doesn't mean much. Putin knows this would not lead to victory and likely would end up with him losing power and likely life.

The scary time is what he will do when he will see his power slipping. Thankfully in 1992 Gorbachev managed to handle it peacefully. Hopefully when it happens it will end up similarly.

  • Winamp is going open source, and it feels like the early 2000s again
  • This is not "perfect is enemy of good" it would be if I was arguing about MIT vs GPL etc.

By signing CLA you're surrendering copyright to the company and this allows them do do whatever they wish with your contribution, including switching back to closed source.

Hashicorp was able to change license of their products exactly thanks to CLA.

  • Winamp is going open source, and it feels like the early 2000s again
  • Yes, thanks for pointing it out. As long as it is some organization that can't be bought it should be fine. I didn't included that because it makes my response more confusing.

Essentially CLA gives the entire copyright to specific entity and that entity in case of FSF it likely could use it for fighting violations, while some startup likely intends to change license when their product gets more popular to cash out on it (for example what Hashicorp did recently before selling to IBM)

  • Winamp is going open source, and it feels like the early 2000s again
  • They just want to get profit from the purchase but they are no longer competitive.

Looks like they are looking for suckers to contribute to their code base for free without even making it actually open source.

IMO at this point WinAmp does not offer anything beyond name recognition and nostalgia. Isn't qmmp essentially an open source version of WinAmp?

  • Winamp is going open source, and it feels like the early 2000s again
  • I disagree.

CLA gives them total ownership of the code (all contributors are surrendering their copyright), and allows them to change license at any point in time, including making it closed source.

If you're contributing code to a project with CLA you're not contributing to Open Source, you're working for a company for free.

  • Just a few specs of rust
  • And the best thing, is that one doesn't even have to mention "cybertruck".

BTW: I just had someone say when I showed them this picture: "no, this is not cybertruck, is it?"

  • Gunman Who Shot Slovak PM Linked to Pro-Russian Extremist Group
  • When you talk to Slovakians they say that his death would be one of the best things to happen to the pro putin movement, as this would make him a martyr.

I personally wonder how it will be as it looks like he survived and these news paint an interesting picture.

  • Trump flubs son Barron's age, ahead of his graduation
  • The one thing I learned about their family is that no one is a normal, upstand person. For example people were having high hopes for Melania to be more human than trump, but she is just like him. Though it does look like she is trying to copy him, even her signature is very similar.

  • Trump flubs son Barron's age, ahead of his graduation
  • Unless you have Alzheimer's, that only means you are not involved with your kid. I know exactly how old mine are and when their birthdays are and I'm normally not good with dates. The thing with birthdays is that the dates stay the same so there's no excuse not to remember it.

  • The planned PSN requirement has been canceled!
  • For me, who has no idea about this, why Sony was so forceful with adding that PSN integration and what it would mean for the gamers, that they were so angry about it?

Edit: ok looks like Louis explained the POV of gamer to me: https://youtu.be/I2VA0eum6w4 though I still don't understand what was the motivation for Sony to start this shit show.

  • Fake Reddit comments generated by AI?

So I ran Power Delete Suite as I periodically do. I have it configured to edit a comment and then delete it. It deletes comments that are older than 1 week old.

What was unusual was that within minutes I got the red envelope. And looking at it there was a response to a comment that I wrote 2 years ago.

So first thing is that as many were saying Reddit undeletes comments. I initially ignored that I saw some comments that I thought were deleted, but I assume it was because subreddits were locked and that's why they were invisible to Power Delete Suite, but this was on r/programming which was unlocked for quite some time (not sure if it ever was locked).

Second thing is the response within minutes.

So my 2 year old comment still exists and it's not showing up on my profile. I wouldn't even know about it is not for that response.

Of course this could be a coincidence, the account that responded to me is 9 years old, the content of it seems normal, although I saw comments on r/ChatGPT.

Though the timing bugs me off. If the comment is not from a real person maybe when Reddit restored it the AI code thought it was a new comment and responded to it.

Another thing that contributes to my suspicion of chatbots being deployed is that I noticed since the API protest and after they unlocked subreddits is that I get more upvotes and more responses than I used to.

    Anyone observed something similar?
