  • I played factorio on either the original version or the one after, and thought wow this game is really cool I'm glad something like this finally exists. I see a couple small youtube channels talking about it and making videos, and I'm like cool maybe in a couple years this turns into a polished game. ~3 months later and the game is one of the most downloaded on steam and is getting huge updates every few weeks. Totally shocked me that it was that ridiculously popular.

  • As a (sometimes) lurker, when I see a comment on the middle east I say "wow even if I studied this conflict I would still have trouble having an opinion here" and skip over it+the replies. I also can't tell if the person said something so ridiculous that the ad hom isn't out of line.

  • That really sucks... wish you got the support you deserved/hope you get the support you need...

I don't know you as well as your therapist and it might sound kinda dumb, but have you tried anything like yoga? Even small things like passing a ball back and forth with someone can put you into your body and out of your mind, hopefully letting you relax a bit, which might help your mind on average be more calm.

  • What you said is pretty true, it takes a good mindset to realize a girlfriend isn't going to change your life, and it doesn't feel great for the people you're expecting to fix everything.

I'd only want to add that even if someone is unhappy with themselves, the friends they make doing stuff they like can guide them to being a happier person, or they can at least be lonely together.

  • What I've seen recommended a lot (by psychologists as well) is going to an event you'd have fun at already (a fair, concert, band, choir, language course, hobby activity like dnd or LAN games) and just keep in mind while you're there to try and get more comfortable being around people.

A lot of places like that force interactions, which can help you become more comfortable. If you're doing something you like then the people there will probably be more similar to you, which makes it easier to make friends. Two of my closest friends were met through 1. language class, and 2. a game we both happened to play that left empty time to chat.

If that's too much, you can try doing something small to get yourself more comfortable, even if it's just hanging out in an online chatroom.

  • I would've failed out of highschool but homeschool allowed me to take community college classes that didn't force 2 hours of busywork every day. If regular schools could deal with different types of students I'd agree, but as it is now that's not the case.

  • Wanted to add a few arguments I saw about eggs, first that we selectively bred chickens to produce eggs at an extremely high rate (unsure what this does to their well-being, but apparently the laying itself is painless). Second, the chicken's eggs could be seen as the "work" they do in exchange for keeping them healthy and happy.

  • https://ibb.co/pvk0HWv https://ibb.co/bsPRfyZ https://ibb.co/0Mxd8rr You were being a smartass and then got one-guyed. The community on lemmy seems generally positive with a few crazies, just like everywhere.

Look in that thread and there are plenty of people who ask "how will youtube keep the servers up without ads though?" with reasonable responses such as: torrent-esque video sharing people donating to creators and youtube taking a cut or reasonable issues like: ads cause me a lot of stress and I am not wealthy, does this mean I can never watch a video again? Or read an article or see any online content? Not wanting to support billion dollar megacorps

Getting responded to in kind by 1 guy is not a toxic community, everywhere I've seen people ask a question in a normal way 99% of the time they get normal responses

  • Well the problem is I "know" the reason, it's because of long covid. All the tests I've taken have shown up completely normal (echo, ekg, etc, as it does for other people with long covid). tachycardia showed up on my last heart monitor and they gave me some prednisone which helped until it went away almost entirely, but they don't know what to do if nothing is observably wrong with my heart.

I'll likely mention the Holter monitor to my doctor though and see if it could find something actually diagnosable though, especially since my heartrate feels off when I'm exercising. Honestly just completely forgot to mention this was happening to my doctor 😅 thanks 👍

  • sadly if you try to be a good landlord and make a slim margin, you'll get dumped a huge repair bill/tax increase/other expense and now you're running the appartment at a loss. At that point you either sell it to a company willing to exploit it or you have to be less nice to your tenants and ignore repairs or charge more. Most people choose the first which is why we end up with terrible landlords.

aside: heard someone in that exact situation running low income housing, on a phone call with an expert talking to the government. The expert said "any prudent management would raise the rents the maximum allowed amount"

  • I have long covid and during the initial stages I had some really bad tachycardia (unknown to me yet) that caused breathing issues. It hadn't been too bad until one day I was lying in bed unable to sleep, and suddenly I feel like every breath is getting me less and less air, even though I'm breathing normally.

I woke up my mom at ~4:30 AM (home because of long covid) and said I feel like I can't breathe. She asks if it's bad enough to go to the ER, and I say it might be. I decided to wait 15 minutes, my heartrate was going crazy and I must just be panicked, and that's why my heart rate is high and why it's hard to breathe.

Over those 15 minutes my heart rate climbs higher and I'm getting dizzy and hyperventilating and still breathless, and say I need to go now, I think I'm at the edge of where I could actually die.

We drive to a hospital and my heart rate slows down a little bit, and I figure I'm not gonna die in the next hour so I end up waiting, struggling to breathe, until 6AM when my primary care opens his office. They do some tests and say everything looks normal, but later a heart monitor would show my heartrate sometimes get to ~120, even while I'm lying in bed trying to sleep. I eventually learned that is what causes the breathlessness.

I've had that happen a couple times since, less frequently it seems, but when it does happen I'm always afraid that this is the time my heart finally gives out. Fortunately it's very rare and I've been able to do some cardio to hopefully help it be even more rare.

  • for things like this I just assume the person's brain just exploded for a second. I could definitely see myself doing this with 2 hours of sleep, and feeling 100% sure you said try is also something a sleep-deprived person would do. Still sucks when it teaches you not to speak up though

  • Do you have any example of an "unpopular opinion" that has gotten you banned or any conservative banned? Also, probably the biggest reason I could see conservatives feeling like they're being "silenced" is because half of their platform is based on being racist(sometimes unintentionally), anti-lgbtq, etc.

  • The difference being when conservatives say it, 99.999% of the time we see the actual reason they were banned was for saying something like "it sure would be unfortunate if someone accidentally dropped an axe on Nancy Pelosi's head haha XD" as a figure with wide reach, or something similarly egregious.

Show me something similar happening here and I will also not take their complaints seriously.

  • Very true, I have a friend who wants to lose weight and said "but eating makes me happy." Easiest way to keep your current habits and lose weight is just add on going to the gym, and the more you go the more you can eat. Added bonus is no matter what happens you'll just feel better in daily life.
