I guess it's a question of how much hassle it's worth. I did a messy data recovery of a crashed database for a work client once, but it involved a lot of trial and error and writing special purpose code, plus considerable luck that some things worked better than I had a right to expect. Cost of something like that would be in the multi kilobucks, maybe low 5 figures. We got almost all the data back, though not 100%.

Maybe just put that HDD aside and replace it with a new one, and deal slowly with recovering the data as you get the time to mess with it. Also don't do any write operations on the old drive. Maybe copy it entirely to someplace and work on the copy. In fact better do that anyway, HD's physically crash all the time.

Gristedes is an expensive yuppie supermarket chain like Whole Foods, in some rich areas. I don't think they have to worry about some city-run stores in underserved neighborhoods. It's just pouting.

I'm not doubting all that stuff is great if Mamdami can make it happen. I'm skeptical that he can make it happen, based on having seen this kind of thing before. Heck, he hasn't even won the mayoral election yet. I'd give him 50% chance of becoming mayor, based on remembering Lieberman for Connecticut. As for the other stuff, it's all vague enough to make it easy to claim victory, at least based on what you've posted here. So I'd want to see definite success criteria based on measurable results.

AOC is a Democrat too, what is the issue? There are factions within the Democrats and she's in one of them but afaict she is nowhere near as radical as she was depicted as being. Part of that is from getting slapped around by the leadership I'm sure.

Mayoral elections like most US elections are multi-party in principle, but usually there are the two major parties and the rest are marginal or fringe. Some offices are solidly enough controlled by one party that the primary essentially determines the general election winner. Example: AOC primaried out the incumbent in a solidly Democratic seat. She then ran in a general election against a Republican and others, but none of them really mattered.

I don't know whether the NYC Mayor election is like that these days. I know NYC has had Republican mayors in living memory, like Ghouliani. Bloomberg (I just checked) did two terms as a Republican, then a 3rd as an independent on the Republican ballot line. He later ran in the 2020 presidential primaries as a Democrat.

Right now there's a situation where Andrew Cuomo (anointee of the NY and maybe even national Dem establishent) just lost the primary but might run as an independent. If the Dem establishment keeps supporting him, maybe he has winning chances. Something like that happened with Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman, who lost a Dem primary but then got re-elected as an independent with Dem party support. His opponent (Ned Lamont, now governor of Connecticut iirc) wasn't even left wing from what I remember.

For his independent run, Lieberman started a new party "Connecticut for Lieberman" and ran as its candidate. After being reelected, the new party had served its purpose and became useless to him, so he forgot about it and the incorporation documents expired. Someone else then got control of it (I guess that's like domain squatting) and apparently used it for some entertaining pranks. I wasn't around for that though.

IDK what thee current wisdom is about masks as source control. They do stop droplets from spewing when the person coughs, but the idea is to filter airborne virus. Anyway, maybe 10% of people around here wear masks.

Shitty policies are usually successful in the sense that they achieve or at least advance their (shitty) goals, fwiw. Are Mamdani's proposals serious (e.g. does he have financial projections for them), or are they like platitudes like wishing for world peace? Tbh I don't think the mayor has the authority to do any of that stuff.
