  • I just put 3 coats of polyurethane on my workbench plywood and it's doing fine after a year or so. I'll probably switch to water based poly when my can of oil based runs out since I hear it's just as durable indoors and easier to clean up after.

  • Interesting point about tariffs specifically in renewables:

[Tariffs are] not good interventions if the goal [is] to increase the number of energy jobs in European and American markets. That’s because most clean energy jobs are in deployment and maintenance rather than manufacturing, and since higher costs slow down the rollout of renewables, increasing prices reduces the total number of people working in clean energy (even if the number working in manufacturing increases).

  • Could also depend on proofing temperature & time. Kinda the same thing, but even if the yeast is active it's easy to time it wrong / get impatient (speaking for myself).

Looks delicious though! I've only tried babka once, maybe I'll give it another go.

  • It’s still unclear if they had a backup anchor to the piton, which is a common practice for rock climbers, said Joshua Cole, a guide and co-owner of North Cascades Mountain Guides who has been climbing in the area for about 20 years.

Very curious if this is a case of missing safety practices, or of common safety practices not always being enough.

  • From the NY Times:

Mr. Alexander is an American Israeli dual citizen who grew up in Tenafly, N.J.

In 2022, during his senior year of high school, he joined Garin Tzabar, which prepares young people from around the world to join the Israel Defense Forces. He moved to Israel to serve in the military after he graduated and was assigned to the infantry.

Mr. Alexander was stationed near the border with Gaza in September 2023

From another article, he said something like "why should I pay for the Israeli government's mistake". Sounds like this falls into the 'just following orders doesn't protect you' category; not feeling a lot of sympathy.

  • The big theme of our storage has been bins — little boxes for random treasures, bins for stuffies, next-size-up clothes, blocks, dolls, dress up, whatever. Not too much effort to clean up, easy to repurpose to match current interests. Though we had a long phase where the preferred way to find something was just to dump the bins out.

The fort idea seems fun. Maybe sections that be placed open for storage, but can swing around to make it into a little play house, with a couple window or mini door cutouts?
