Me (interviewing recently): Could I see an example design doc or some code before we discuss your offer? Hiring manager: We don't do designs, just launch and iterate. And here's some code, it's all fully self documenting. Me: Nope nope nope.

Years ago, the family immigrated from El Salvador, in part to seek medical care for the 14-year-old, who has a debilitating heart condition. Three weeks before we spoke, the mother heard from a friend that ICE was looking for her. Ever since, she and the kids had been in hiding. They hadn’t left the house, afraid even to take out the trash. The boys had missed weeks of school and doctor’s appointments, living off food brought by relatives. The mother was trying to pass the time in a way that felt light for the kids, watching Superman and having pajama parties, but she could tell the boys were scared and stir crazy. They longed to go outside, to play in the park.

Not much difference left from Jews hiding in cellars and attics.

Haven't purchased AppleTV yet but heard great things so far.

If you're not part of a targeted class, it's privilege to be able to choose not to put yourself out there, saving yourself the worry of individual visibility while also feeling no risk of ongoing class/race based oppression.

Unless your country is devolving into a fascist dictatorship and everyone will be carted off to concentration camps sooner or later for political expression.

The Louvre’s spontaneous strike erupted during a routine internal meeting, as gallery attendants, ticket agents and security personnel refused to take up their posts in protest over unmanageable crowds, chronic understaffing and what one union called “untenable” working conditions.

It’s rare for the Louvre to close its doors. It has happened during war, during the pandemic, and in a handful of strikes — including spontaneous walkouts over overcrowding in 2019 and safety fears in 2013. But seldom has it happened so suddenly, without warning, and in full view of the crowds.

Depraved. Not one mention of de-escalation, nothing but celebration for the bad people killed. Not that I expected to find it.

I'll recommend "The Warmth of Other Suns" if you want a beautifully written history of racial history across the families / time periods in the US. Definitely helped me personalize & put together a lot of pieces left out of my education.
