ELI5: How is Amazon able to sell me books so much cheaper than brick and mortar book stores in my area
  • Sure, but in that previous time period, they didn't make a profit but were able to destroy the brick and mortar bookstore. So I guess it would be more honest to say they demolished the bookselling industry and now can argue for whatever deals they want because the only other bookstores are weakened.

  • ELI5: How is Amazon able to sell me books so much cheaper than brick and mortar book stores in my area
  • Amazon does not make any profit from their books. They are able to sell them cheaply because they sell them at a loss. They weren't even profitable for a long time and maintained thanks to investors. Basically, Bezos sold the idea of the future of his store's worth. And it worked.

  • Social differences even between coasts are massive
  • It took me a while to figure out. Like I knew Southerners can be mean and judgy, but I didn't think about how until I traveled to other places and saw how much more straightforward people are. It's nice when kindness is kindness and there's no underlying meaning.

  • Truth.
  • Lexus cars. Every time some terrible driving is happening around me, it is one of them. I literally cannot count how many times I've almost been hit by one of them not stop at streetlights or stop signs or not slowing down for the pedestrian (me!) in the crosswalk. That commercial where the lexus driver drives over the man's papers just solidified what sort of asshole drives those cars.

  • Like all social media, you have to curate it. I follow hashtags for cats, books, writing, fandoms, etc. The rage is minimum then because my homepage doesn't have politics or news. I actually do follow a couple of news sources, but their stuff is surrounded by an ocean of fun things so it's not nearly as bad.

  • This is one of mine, too. My partner and I used to work for this store that sold used instruments and sound equipment. She told one of the testers it was my favorite song, so for six months, any time he tested something, he would play it. Randomly one day he came up to me and asked if I enjoyed the music he'd been using because I never said anything, and I explained that I hated that song. He was absolutely shocked and then laughed and told me what my partner had told him. It was a good prank, despite my suffering.
