  • Yeah. I don't want to say I'm disappointed, because that would suck even more for the guy, but I will say I'm a little underwhelmed.

Also, what's with that insane autoplay video in the article using stock video footage to tell the story? Have we sunk so low?

  • I mean, Absurdism can (to a degree) take you from depressed to content. It obviously can't help with the actual chemical imbalance sort of depression that drugs can fix, but it sure can help with that good ol' existential dread.

It's been a staple of my mental health for decades, though the drugs certainly help. SSRI's for me, but whatever works for you.

TLDR: Absurdism is good and drugs are good too.

  • Good on him for doing the right thing, but a few thoughts.

    1. Who the fuck walks around with that much cash? I keep a $20 bill (CAD, so only about 14 EUR) in my wallet for emergencies and everything else gets paid by card.
    2. I suspect the police had a few similar questions for anyone brave enough to claim that wallet.
    3. As per the community this is posted in, it's a bummer that he was homeless in the first place but this is a huge windfall for him. Systemic issues aside, I see this as a win for the dude and his family.
  • I've legit dreamed of doing something like that. My wife and I could pretty easily do our jobs fully remote, but she'd never go for it as she likes to physically be in the office too much. We've also got a baby on the way in a few weeks, so it'd be even less feasible then. Oh well - I can dream.

  • Now that you mention it, it looks like this was a concert exclusively for men. I don't know how concerts worked in Poland at that time, but I'd expect at least some women. I was super involved in my local punk and metal scene growing up in the early 2000s and the crowd was always around 50/50.

  • That picture is forever burned into my mind when I think of Reddit.

I'd love to see one for Lemmy. I suspect it'd be largely the same except about 25% of us pasty nerds would be trans women, and there would be a lot of Linux merch on display.

  • You know, until you posted this comic I never really put it together that millipedes are generally not predators. I guess that also explains why I've always instinctively found them less scary than centipedes.

  • I'd looove to see this but an international plan to stop climate change is also technically possible but I'm not gonna get my hopes up based on what we've seen in that arena thus far. That latter is also an outright existential threat to our species.

It's also technically possible that anyone can win the lottery but the odds are decidedly stacked against them.

I hate that I'm so goddamn pessimistic about this stuff, but it's hard to see a path to betterment until shit really hits the fan in catastrophic ways. (Moreso than we've seen thus far.) Between the rich holding ridiculous power and the 30-40% of the population they've utterly brainwashed, an optimistic future seems pretty far fetched. Not that we shouldn't try, of course, I'm just venting my frustrations. That said, as an elder millenial, I have a good degree of hope for the younger generations. Overall they seem much more progressive and don't buy into the illusions about our current system that we do.

I spent sooooo much of my teens and early 20s involved in leftist activism and spent the next decade utterly apathetic as we never seemed to accomplish much of anything. Now I'm just trying to get by and help those who I directly have the power to help, such as coworkers and the kids in my life.
