  • There definitely is and I can’t remember for the life of me what it is. But that other one wasn’t a rewrite of the first book but like an 1800 page full on fanfic. You’re definitely not trippin on this one

  • There is a ton more to critique of these people. It’s a trap for high intelligence but low mental health individuals that effectively looks to abuse and extract value out of them. Really nothing positive the “rationalists” add to society

  • That’s incredibly presumptuous. If you’re a janitorial service, or front office person from a temp agency living paycheck to paycheck it’s not a reasonable thing to do to ask them to change jobs because they’re assigned to work for the Tesla building. If we expected that of everyone nobody would ever work for insurance companies, pharma companies, big tech, oil, trucking, or literally anywhere at all. It’s not the working class’ fault that oligarchs make their Nazi supporting companies the only place that will hire you in most areas (looking at Amazon especially).

Now if you’re a middle class car salesman and you peddle swastikars to republican morons then by all means I agree. Everyone else is mostly just getting hassled for no reason. I get the sentiment but if you forget the human element you get closer to the abuser than the solution

  • At 33 now and realizing I was never a “gamer”. I just play MMO RPGs religiously. Had the gtx970 from release until 2022 when i got a 3080. It was worth it to upgrade the sim rig to stable VR frame rates but even just 3 years later msfs2024 stutters. Still mega worth the upgrade - even if my wow/ff xiv/aion/l2 run at infinity frames per second on an old thinkpad

  • It’s going to be one of those things where you pay to remove the obvious ads already marked as promoted content. Then it will be replaced by endless feed of accounts posting ai slop that markets specific items/ideas to people. Why get paid to put Tide ads on side banner when the user can pay you to receive fake content promoting right wing ideology (in exchange for access to power in the us). There is no world in which Facebook, a tool to generate fake consensus, is not filled with advertisements. Paid or not paid, you’re being advertised to on there

  • The only people I feel bad for here are the minimum wage employees at the Tesla dealerships. It’s just a job and you can also do it poorly and not sell any teslas, or maybe they work for a janitor service or security. None of those folks deserve to worry about their safety because the guy at the top is ruining the country - that part has nothing to do with them

  • TLDR: rationalists are basically a cult that worships AI and have some practices that lead to abuse and sometimes suicide. Zizzians are an even more extremist branch of rationalists and their members killed a few people in recent years.

Totally understandable because it’s a weird corner of the internet so the rundown is as follows:

“rationalists” are a subculture which while not really a cult it has a ton of cult-like tendencies. They’re a group that likes to discuss AI (predating the LLM boom of recent years) and the possibility of humans creating a singularity - an all powerful ai that will effectively solve all our problems and run the earth in the most “net positive” and rational way. There is a good amount on the rationalist cult on the internet and it’s a fun but kinda sad rabbit hole to research (it involves a ton of smart people falling for some rather weird logical fallacies as well as a fan-fiction of Harry Potter they effectively treat as a holy text). Anyway…

There are a lot beliefs rationalist discussions tend towards but generally it’s an agreement that the singularity is the most beneficial thing that could happen to humans and anyone trying to help the human race should work towards a singularity level AI with all their resources… this leads to more dark ideas such like pondering if it’s a “net positive” for some people to commit suicide as they do not contribute to society enough to justify the resources they take up. Pretty harmful and has lead to multiple suicides in their circles which they sort of just shrug off.

This sort of environment is conducive to people who take advantage of their status. There have been plenty of allegations around the rationalist community leaders abusing younger women (they have an organization whose name escapes my memory atm).

Now “zizzians” are a more radicalized group of people who broke out of the rationalist movement and started their own cult. They have wild beliefs like “to succeed in saving the planet one has to make themselves into a sociopath to not be burdened by sociatal expectations”. Through a bizarre chain of events zizzian cult members ended up killing multiple people around the end of 2018 including a border patrol agent on the border of Vermont. There is relatively little about zizzians out there as it’s a small group within an already small subculture.

There is a fantastic 4 part episode about the zizzians on the behind the bastards podcast. It’s a wild ride and I highly recommend it.

  • Usually that stuff is not included because women sex toys are seen as empowering while for men it’s seen as “gross, unnecessary, or otherwise perverted”. So I doubt they’re counting the fact that women have technically been fucking robots for a lot longer than men lol

  • Is it full remote work for all developers and knowledge workers unless absolutely necessary ? Because if you’re not starting there it’s not a serious effort and just PR laundering - to which the OP is contributing.

Also children workers and sweatshops are a “low carbon footprint “ so who knows maybe the supply chain will be running a 100% renewable childhood poverty trapped Human Resources

  • We’re on to AI now, and when you let some secluded online communities of empirically smart but socially dumb people cook on this idea and you get the “rationalists” cult. You let that fester for a bit and you get zizzians and sexual assault/murder.

Weird that this is a valid observation in a lighthearted space. Usually it’s just nonsense

  • Yeah I’d be okay if someone who has a Tesla was just honest and said that changing cars is a hassle and seems like too much effort given the backlash is new and the car is 4 years old. That’s at least a logically consistent argument and since they own the car already it doesn’t carry the same moral implications as buying a Tesla post Nazi Elon. Pretending it’s a financial hardship or that nobody would buy it is just lying to yourself I think. Plenty of politically clueless people still buy Teslas in the US.

  • Yeah it’s a weird take because if you can afford a Tesla you can afford the few grand it sank in value to get a different vehicle. It’s the usual wallet > morals type of deal where a guy who owns a company and can afford a Tesla is just worried about few hundred bucks

  • All absolutely valid points and my only counter argument here is that is why wagon sedans exist. Growing up in Poland a wagon was the family hauler bringing all the stuff you mentioned to pretty much anywhere you need. People even haul rvs with the wagons and you’re still smaller and relatively more pedestrian friendly. Hell they even make performance cars in wagon spec like the bmw m3. Not saying that to discredit your point just that there was another option before the suv craze came about
