Who should be regulated, Google or Reddit? Reddit updated there robots.txt to disallow everything. As it's their site, I guess it's also their right to determine that. They then made a deal with Google, which I guess is also not abusing a dominant position by Google, as Reddit could have made a deal with anyone.
It's a bit of a dilemma reading their policy:
We believe in the open internet and in keeping Reddit publicly accessible to foster human learning (...) Unfortunately, we see more and more entities using unauthorized access (...) especially with the rise of use cases like generative AI. This sort of misuse of public data has become more prominent as more and more platforms close themselves off from the open internet.
We still believe in an open internet, but we do not believe that third parties have a right to misuse public content just because it’s public.
Being a open/public platform, but still wanting to protect user's content from being used for AI could be a good thing, and I guess also what many fediverse users would want for this platform. Making a distinction between AI and search indexing could indeed be difficult. But then making content deals with Google for search indexing and AI training is a bit hypocrite.

I remember the developer mentioned something about this once, and I had to scroll way to far back to find it: https://lemmy.ca/comment/1264956
I can totally understand being somewhat insecure about your code, or have the feeling that you need to do this/this/that before you can publish it online. And indeed dealing with an issue tracker, pull request that people expect you to review, forks of your code being published elsewhere, finding and trusting other developers to commit directly to your project can feel stressful. Disabling issues and pull request on GitHub could resolve some of these issues.
Connect is a fantastic app, and still my favourite lemmy client. I hope it will continue to work en be great for a long time. And most importantly that the developers still has fun working on the project.
When using my home instance, lemm.ee, the user avatars and community images of all communities and users of other instances are not loading. Instead they show a infinity spinning icon.
Since the release of lemmy 0.19.4 images can be loaded via the new image proxy. Connect seems to append format=webp&thumbnail=64
to an image URL. However, when this is added to a proxy image URL, it it not working. These query parameters are only working for /pictrs
images.
Example of url that fails: https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fc6d6b005-8790-4d12-a11e-ef2cba2cb397.png?format=webp&thumbnail=64
Edit: as far as I can see in the json API, the icon/avatar url is delivered without the query parameters, and Connect is adding them. For users/communities on my home instance the url is always with /pictrs
, so after adding the query parameters it still works. But for users/communities on another instance the url is with /image_proxy
and then adding the query parameters leads to an error.
Missed a bit of variation in the games. I felt alot of it was 3D with guns and generic video game graphics. Would have been nice to have to have a platformer, or some titles with distinct art styles.
Thanks for the reply. Regarding the avatars in Connect, I see that it tries to load https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fc6d6b005-8790-4d12-a11e-ef2cba2cb397.png?format=webp&thumbnail=64 , which indeed leads to a 404 error. The problem is in the additional query parameters added to the URL. Without them the image does load. It's not just a URL encode issue, as the fully URL-encoded https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fc6d6b005-8790-4d12-a11e-ef2cba2cb397.png%3Fformat%3Dwebp%26thumbnail%3D64 also gives the same error. So it might just be a bug Lemmy itself.
I've observed two issues with certain type of images on lemm.ee.
The first issue relates to external avatars, both user and community. In the Android app Connect they are no longer loading and just show a spinner. Only the avatars of users and communities on lemm.ee itself are loading. It doesn't occur on web. And when using my lemmy.world account in Connect, all external avatars do load correctly. I think this started after the upgrade to 0.19.4.
The second issue is with metadata image, the og:image
a page declares. This isn't always shown on lemm.ee. As an example a post I made with my lemm.ee account on a lemmy.world community.
https://lemm.ee/post/31969605 - Next to the title it just shows a generic external link icon.
https://lemmy.world/post/15406863 - Same post but now via lemmy.world shows the image that the target webpage defined as its og:image
correctly.

Thanks for the quick fix. And thank you very much for this really awesome app!
I updated to the latest beta, 1.0.175, bit this seems to have a major bug. When scrolling down in a lost of posts, after maybe 20 posts there is no more content. When this happens the app completely freezes and o have to force-quit. And when scrolling really fast through the list of posts, the whole screen turns grey and the all also freezes.
Is this a long term source of revenue for Reddit? Or will it loose value at some point, simply because LLMs are all trained sufficiently on user generated content. Is there more to learn at some point?
Also it seems that a lot of content on Resdit is already AI generated, so it would train on data from other LLMs, which I'm sure doesn't improve quality.

Get a device that is supported by KOReader and install that. I use an old Kindle Paperwhite 2, and with KOReader it's great. I use Calibre for library management (on a laptop) and it supports a wireless connection directly to Calibre. Or if you prefer to have your library on a NAS device (or sync it) you can set up an ODPS feed to directly browse and download from your NAS.
Microsoft has announced the launch of Xbox Indie Selects, a program designed to promote indie games that rekindles memories of Xbox Live Arcade.
Rekindling memories of the Xbox 360’s famous Xbox Live Arcade, Xbox Indie Selects features a monthly, curated collection of six indie games in the Xbox Store, dashboard, and on Xbox social channels. Microsoft added that it will not include indie games already in Game Pass, “even if they’re fantastic”, because Game Pass games are already featured in the Game Pass hub.

I used to be a big fan of Assassin's Creed games, both the old style and the two new RPG styles. But not sure if I'm down for a 100 hours game.
I think having Game Pass expanded the style of games I play quite a bit, and I now enjoy short games a lot more.

And according to a Game Pass app notification Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are also added. (Not the recent Baldur's Gate 3)
I agree that a lot of subscriptions are really overpriced, but updates to an app are also a sort-of service. Pixelmator explained it quite well when their app switched to a subscription model, mentioning some fair (I think) pros and cons of the succession model, both from the perspective of users and developers.
I want to play this. But i also still have a lot of game pass games i want to play. Oh, when will my struggles ever end?

In fact, nothing from Xbox is in the list
Hi-Fi RUSH is nominated in five categories (Best Art Direction, Best Score And Music, Best Audio Design, Innovation In Accessibility, Best Action Game) and Forza Motorsport is nominated in two (Innovation In Accessibility, Best Sports / Racing). Starfield is nominated for Best RPG (but has no chance of winning).
Xbox marked the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's campaign with a large splash screen at startup, to the chagrin of some fans.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a multi-platform release, but that isn't stopping Xbox from giving it the full first-party treatment. Xbox users booting up their console today were greeted with a large splash screen prompting them to buy it now that the new campaign is out, and some of them aren't too happy about it.

A big shake-up ready for Activision Blizzard and the future of AI.
Microsoft is promoting Matt Booty to president of game content and studios, including the new responsibility of ZeniMax, and Sarah Bond to Xbox president, overseeing all Xbox platform and hardware work.
The Xbox changes mean Booty will now lead an expanded organization inside Microsoft Gaming that now includes ZeniMax and Bethesda. Booty’s expanded role should help Microsoft Gaming avoid scenarios like Redfall in the future, with Microsoft clearly focusing on better collaboration between the teams it acquired with the ZeniMax / Bethesda acquisition.
Bond will now take over the hardware and software platforms of Xbox. She will now be responsible for the future of Xbox, both in hardware and software.
These Xbox leadership changes mean there will be more women in gaming leadership roles at Microsoft than men once Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, departs at the end of 2023.
Or if you only have 82.5 hours available, check out the episode recommendations at https://medium.com/maxistentialism-blog/star-trek-deep-space-nine-in-82-5-hours-10acde591fd2 I found it a great way to watch it in a slightly condensed form, focussing on the main themes.
Same. Looks a bit like Sable, but with a really different art style.
A bit surprising that most people pay full price. I really was under the impression that almost everyone did the 3 years gold-to-gamepass conversion and get it really cheap. But maybe the people here (or on Reddit) are not representative of all subscribers.
My 3 year conversion ends in February. Still undecided if I'll renew at the full monthly price.
Autoscaling isn't only used the grow the number of servers under load, but also to guarantee availability of a fixed number. If the max is set to 1, the bastion host is protected against hardware failure, zone outages, or just you screwing up. Accidentally killed your bastion host? No problem, within a few minutes autoscaling will have provisioned a new one and you're good to go again.
Arstechnica runs on WordPress on AWS, and they have a really nice series of articles about it. Sure, you could use just one EC2 instance for everything, but on a high traffic website you would need a bit more.
