  • Compared to software developer compensation in California, Germany is waaaay cheaper.

Heck, Munich is cheaper for Google than literally any of their US offices. You would make more by working for Google in Raleigh, North Carolina than in Munich.

The only European city that pays as well as the US is Zürich. The pay is really good there, about the same as Seattle.

  • The EU is terrible at maintaining good tech companies.

Like, they have some really important and innovative consumer protection regulations, but they are really shooting themselves in the foot with this one...

  • Cheating is such a hard problem.

Like, this is what leads to invasive client-side anti-cheat. Which also happens to be one of the main blockers for OS portability.

But if you make it so that the server has to constantly validate the game state, you get terrible lag.

You really have to design your game well to deter cheaters. And you have to empower server moderators to ban cheaters. This sorta implies releasing the servers so that communities can run their own instances, because these studios don't have the resources to handle moderation themselves.

  • I'm 31, and Shrek was where I first heard this song. I would have been 9 years old.

Obviously it's an amazing song with a rich history and many covers. But I'll bet that most folks my age heard it first in Shrek.

Gen Z probably (hopefully) doesn't associate the song with Shrek as strongly as millennials.

My favorite cover is the one by Jeff Buckley. Though the John Cale (Shrek film) and Rufus Wainwright (Shrek soundtrack) covers are both great. Honestly, I think the original by Leonard Cohen is the least good (but still good).

  • I assume it will still be possible to enable the APIs with adb.

So this will mostly affect users in that in-between skill level where they know how to use a third-party app store (or how to download and install apps from a file browser) but don't know how to use adb. I'm not so sure how big that segment is. Probably pretty small.

For the group of users who are tech-illiterate (the common case), this is actually a very welcome change for malware prevention.

The February 28 incident (also called the February 28 massacre, the 228 incident, or the 228 massacre) was an anti-government uprising in Taiwan in 1947 that was violently suppressed by the Kuomintang–led nationalist government of the Republic of China (ROC). Directed by provincial governor Chen Yi and president Chiang Kai-shek, thousands of civilians were killed beginning on February 28. The incident is considered to be one of the most important events in Taiwan's modern history and was a critical impetus for the Taiwan independence movement.

    Between 18,000 and 28,000 deaths...
