  • Users report that clicking the Start button can spike CPU usage by 30% to 70% on at least one core, depending on the hardware configuration.

Good grief. And that's coming from a GNOME user.

  • Yeah, this is fair. It could be that bikes are the upper limit to complexity. :)

Some friends of mine have experiences with very bad Italian bikes, but I think it's a matter of getting what you pay for. My own bad experiences has mostly been with French bikes...

  • How could i forget my Moka! I mostly drink filter coffee though, where I sadly go American with a Chemex. :(

  • I go Italian with a lot of kitchen appliances. My Italian stainless steel frying pan is amazing. Pasta machine obviously. They also make some great shoes and leather products.

I would never trust them with anything of equal or greater complexity to a bicycle.

  • My vacuum cleaner is made in Germany. Super happy with it after one year. I also have a pretty sturdy German kitchen knife.

Pretty sure some of my power tools are also German, but that's bought more on the basis of what I could find in flea markets than where it was produced.

  • Funny that the EU is scores higher than 26 of its member states.

  • The American companies obsessed with cutting costs generally don't manufacture in the US any more. Potential exception for the automobile industry, but these cars aren't really exported much to the rest of the world any more.

Also worth noting that this is based on data from 2017. I would be happy to buy a pair of jeans made in America back then. Now, not so much.

  • This is like how we used to have independent businesses all around the country, and now we're left with a handful of shitty chains along the superhighway.

It's an infrastructure problem. We need to support the odd roads that lead us to the smaller independent corners of the web.

I guess that's exactly what we're doing on the Fediverse. I just hope it's not too long before a search engine that prioritizes independent sources actually starts performing well.

  • Moreover, given that Hunt and LaBella are members of the performers union SAG-AFTRA, their intimate scenes would also be subject to the labor group’s regulations, which call for prior notice, consent and a closed set.

...so for non-unionized talents the industry assumes it doesn't need prior notice or consent?

  • If he was open to change his mind, that's cool. It's hard to find good sources for anything going on in this controversy, especially considering the fact that it seems to come up any time anyone is talking about Ladybird. But by how little is out there it at least seems wrong to write the guy off as downright hateful.

I hope it got to a point where trans people are comfortable contributing to the project.

  • Apparently the developer is/was one of those guys who gets into fights over pronouns, maintaining that assuming everyone on the planet is male is somehow apolitical while inclusive language is not.

I honestly doubt it is/was hate as much as ignorance, but I'm not particularly well informed and I don't know the guy at all.

  • Yeah, I honestly have no idea. Probably a mix of both.

If people are silenced from sharing their stories because they also ask for aid this seems potentially bad. It's also unfortunate that it's hard to say what has really gone down since the record is deleted, though it's probably available somewhere online.

In either case I think it illustrates quite clearly the advantages of true decentralization for censorship resistance. What is allowed or not on Bluesky is decided by a tiny board of Americans, with no meaningful way of bypassing their moderation decisions.

  • I love this! Totally agree with @tetris11@lemmy.ml, the feeling of alienation here is fantastic and works on so many levels.

  • I think the opening quotes in How the Irish Became White tell an amazing story in just a few sentences:

The Irish, who, at home, readily sympathize with the oppressed everywhere, are instantly taught when they step upon our soil to hate and despise the Negro.... Sir, the Irish-American will one day find out his mistake.

    — Frederick Douglass, May 10, 1853

Passage to the United States seems to produce the same effect upon the exile of Erin as the eating of the forbidden fruit did upon Adam and Eve. In the morning, they were pure, loving, and innocent; in the evening guilty.

    — The Liberator, August 11, 1854

The Irish are the blacks of Europe. So say it loud— I’m black and I’m proud.

    — The Commitments, 1991

Paddy might have worked as an insult way back when we thought America was anything else than a huge fucking mistake. Today it's a badge of honour—the worst thing to ever happen to the Irish was "becoming white".

  • I guess he lives off the idea that any attention is good for him, which seems to be working out pretty well so far. So on a personal level changing a salient policy every week makes sense.

Whether it's good for America... Let's just say I'd care more if they didn't vote for him twice.

  • I'm sure you could have a fruitful conversation with the crowd insisting it was written by AI. :)

  • Maybe the question we should ask is not "how much does Tom Cruise love movies", but rather "where is Shelly".

  • This is just obviously not the case to anyone who bothers reading it. It's an original piece of writing.

The only thing that could hint at AI here is the use of em-dashes, which is a bullshit tell—I use them all the time myself as well. They're right there for anyone with a compose key on Linux.
