In Over My Head
  • It's work for pay, not a social club.

    They also believe in working yourself to death for a paycheck

    Companies these days don't want to pay.

    seems like the company wants to keep us for 5+ years

    Great, demand less work and more pay. Tell others like you and demand as a group!

    Be different, make them change. Bonus if you file for discrimination and get that payout.

    Never quit, let them fire you.

  • What single book/text would you recommend for people and what skill can it help them learn?
  • Arch Linux Installation Guide = How to take back control over our own computing, plus some extra tech skills, useful irrespective of your occupation or hobbies. I would suggest doing it a second device, like when already buying a new computer, so your stuff stays safe on the old one.

  • How good you feel good about your privacy using apps such as Signal?
  • Worse, both of you should know better! See its software license cited above.

    Spreading funding FUD tells us nothing about whether its license or source code is malicous, just makes people apathetic to privacy.

  • How to carrier level block all calls and texts to a phone number, to only allow data, to force others to use Signal?

    Not just locally on the device! There must be an error when calling or texting the number.

    Data must work for internet for Signal, VoIP, etc.

    This is for a UK PAYG SIM.

    There should be no way for anyone to demand my number, or for me to leak it, or doing so should be irrelevant as it does not work.

    Ring doorbell alternatives (only camera or plus mic and speakers) + Small Size?

    Need at least the camera, if not that plus a microphone and speakers, not the lock or bell.

    Libre Software (Obviously) + End-to-End Encryption

    Small and easy to hide, so the camera isn't stolen, attacked or bypassed.

    GrapheneOS, Pixel 8 Pro £709 or Pixel 9 Pro £1,099?

    Update I have come to a decision. Thank you to all who contributed suggestions. Please feel free to keep the discussion going to help others.

    System-wide/background push-to-talk (PTT) voice chat without registration or having to run my own server (to replace Discord)?

    Jitsi Meet and Matrix are missing system-wide/background push-to-talk (PTT) (to replace Discord).

    • Tell Jitsi -> github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet-electron/issues/210

    • Tell Matrix -> github.com/element-hq/element-web/issues/15284

    • Tell Element Call -> call.element.io (Settings > Feedback)

    • Tell SimpleX -> github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat/issues/2398

    Alternatives (obviously must be cross-platform end-to-end encrypted libre software)?

    With anti-libre software, we are not users, we are used.
