YouTube traffic in Russia drops 80% as authorities try to curb access
  • Peertube in it's current form is not a replacement for anyone other than tech nerds and it's not gonna change unless some real changes are made to how the platform fundamentally operates.

    1. The federation is currently opt in so the videos you see are largely dependant on which instance you choose. They made this choice because of the obvious problem – storage cost.
    2. You're stuck hopping between instances because the content is really fragmented.
    3. I don't think that there are currently ways to stream other instances' content if the content is not mirrored onto the instance that you're on.
    4. No way to search through the whole fediverse for content on many instances, but it is available on some, like fair.tube.

This is just my opinion so correct me if you think I'm wrong. Many of these problems have plagued the site for a while.

  • Organic Maps Turns 4 Years: The Privacy-Focused Alternative to Google Maps
  • I much prefer OsmAnd. Organic maps is too simplistic for my taste.

  • How many apps do you have in your obtainium?
  • I used to use it, but now use Weather Master that's available through izzyonddroid. It's even more aesthetically pleasing imo and also let's you choose from more sources.

  • Anyone just hates how some apps can disable screenshots?
  • I understand the reasoning for it since many apps can see photos on your device so if it is something that should stay private you probably shouldn't be taking screenshots anyway, but I also can see how it could be annoying. I quite like the feature on messaging apps actually.

  • Just use OSS document scanner – it's foss and works pretty well. I've already scanned dozens of documents with it. It also comes with a ton of extra features (enhance being one of those, although I haven't used it).

  • Sync local folder with Nextcloud
  • I know I'm a year late, but maybe someone discovers it someplace else. You still can't do this – everything syncs to /Android/media/NextCloud/etc

When devices are designed to become obsolete sooner than later, you know there is a problem. A problem that's getting scarier every day.

Better way to open any Lemmy link in your preferred app

So I know that there is Lemmy redirect and linksheet with which you could technically open Lemmy links in your preferred app, but there has got to be a better way. This should definitely be a feature that gets added since the possibility of your actually finding a post from your own instance on Google(or duckduckgo) is very slim. I can't imagine Lemmy gaining much of a following before flaws like this are ironed out.

Best FOSS note app with NextCloud sync
  • I was gonna upvote, but this is a shit solution. Syncthing and server a server refresh is better.

  • What

  • Hardware recs for newb? Please.
  • That's what I'm also doing – using a junk old laptop as NAS and it's been pretty great so far. What would you recommend for expanding the storage of it? It has a SATA 2.5" port and I believe an nvme SSD slot. From past experience, the bigger 2.5" HDDs are slow and have a high failure rate. Maybe it's just time to ditch the old laptop.

  • Best free way to sync obsidian?
  • Obsidian is great though, even if it's not open-source. The stability of alternatives is not at the same level from what I've heard.

  • Mobilecoin

Anybody have any experience with mobilecoin? What is the use case for it? Seems kind of pointless and a lot more tedious than just a bank transfer. Why does signal include crypto nonsense in their app (I like crypto, but just can't see any reason why it should be integrated in the app). I'm sad that signal does not have support for 3rd party open source clients that could remove such features. Why not add support for monero instead?

    Cheap Android Tablet suggestions
  • If you're not opposed to apple then I would suggest getting an iPad – they are actually really completely priced compared to phones.
