  • Earth Defense Force is the shit. It's not way more fun than it has any right to be, it's exactly as fun as shooting giant alien insects as an overly patriotic earth sci Fi military SHOULD be.

I think if you show the gameplay to somebody and then the addicting loot system that they'd be down, unless they just don't like the chaotic shooter-ness. But yeah, those games are fucking great

  • I'm not going to assume the way they made space is the same way they'd make a regular overworld in their older games. If it were easy enough to just do it like they always do, then they would've done it, I think.

No matter what I feel like that's a pretty big deal, having seamless transition through space, and it's not our place to armchair speculate that they could've done it without sacrificing much else, unless the person making the criticism is a crack programmer that could've stepped in there and been like "move aside, idiots, I'm here to cure all of your shitty design with ease and miserliness"

  • Agreed, I've had a lot of NPC jank, sometimes items in the environment fall out of place randomly. I had a bug where I couldn't land on Porrima III for a quest, I had to go to some other planets in the system, try to save, quit the game, come back, and it let me.

I sometimes wonder that people are so lax on the definition of a bug that they might say Starfield isn't buggy. It has not been like game breakingly buggy, aside from my quest bug if that had kept up, but it's certainly got a lot of low level bugs that amount to a reasonable bit of jank.

  • Do you not just put your weapon away in cities? Ive accidentally drawn my weapon, but the draw time is long enough that I realize and just holster it again instead. You could also just select the weapon in your favorites again and it should unequip it.

  • Its not necessarily a kid's game, but that is their primary demographic and player base out of some fusion of being easy to run, simple games being easier to create, the art style, the accessibility and short term gratification of easily jumping between experiences.

  • Well, yeah, it's technically possible, but it was not easy enough for them to implement in that engine for it to be the most financially feasible option in order to deliver on the amount of content/other engine changes that they wanted to, is probably the more complex answer. I'm sure if Bethesda stopped at nothing to achieve no loading screens that they could do it, but at the cost of whatever instability or lost time for other engine improvements or content created, which is the choice they made.

Unless we could see the nonexistent alternate Starfield where that was the priority instead it's hard to say whether it's "because of the engine" or not, whether that is a literal thing or more of a tradeoff of labor time thing.

  • That'll be a game changer, I have to try it out soon

  • I don't think you can in Starfield, or at least I didn't see options for it. Elite Dangerous ruined me on space flight, I always look in game bindings now for disabling the dampeners and also a button that immediately cuts all throttle, didn't find either in Starfield's bindings

  • Not sure I'll be able to get over In N Out Burger. For a chain their consistency is incredible. Good quality ingredients, but most specifically, they always get the toast on the bun perfect, soft in the center, crispy just around the edges, and thousand Island style dressing on a burger is the shit.

  • Turns out if you have flawless facial structure you can pull off any haircut

  • I see, I picked up the skill but haven't actually done the whole ship capture thing yet. That seems a pretty appropriate way to make it so it's not an easy get rich quick scheme.

  • I don't think they were chasing newer tech, so much as the development was taking so incredibly long that their current tech had literally aged out of the common gamer's expectations and they HAD to do it over to seem current.

  • I don't think it's possible for the game to flop anymore if we're going off money made. In terms of them making money after they fully "release", well... I don't know if it will ever actually "release".

  • Advertisers don't like it, and won't advertise where there's porn. Advertisers pay for most of these websites' existence. They capitulate to the demands.

  • Now that's a sexy rectangle.

  • It's be disingenuous to say the animations aren't absolutely improved. But it'd also be disingenuous to say all of the little engine quirks aren't still there. It's not about the quality of those animations, it's the slow snapping between them and the amount of time before the NPC is "ready to talk"

  • My proof that it was a Bethesda game was when I was first exploring New Atlantis, and I tried to talk to a man who was relaxing at a table in a bar. He instantly snapped from his relaxed pose into a different animation where he slowly got up out of the chair, turned around to face away from the chair, stopped, turned to face me, then the camera zoomed in on his face and he spouted some random TMI opening sentence about his job.

I just cackled and cackled for a good 5 seconds or so. Feels like home.
