  • A theologian I spoke to pointed out that even Martin Luther didn't revert the changes Constantine wrought, like the holy day being on the sabbath instead of Sunday to commemorate Easter every week. I guess roughly 1200 years of habits are hard to break, when Constantine only had a few hundred years to contend with, and there were so many sects of a very different Christianity even then (Nestorians, Syriacs, Copts etc).

  • The logical error here is assuming it's about skin colour when it's in fact about centuries of exploitation in Africa that Musk benefited hugely from. I suppose it's not a logical error if one doesn't know about the history of colonialism in Africa.

It's reasonable to assume that any white person who lived in southern Africa (Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa in particular) moved there not for the safari or the lifestyle but for the eye-watering profits that came from exploiting the land as their resource and its peoples as their labour. A lot of contrarian arguments that get voted down on the internet focus on the minority view, and I think this is where you're coming from - unfortunately in the case of colonial Africa, there aren't very many clean hands at all, even if they weren't the ones being cut off.

  • Unclear analogy - is the substrate going through the mesh the process of nice things existing? Maybe I'm thinking of substrate in a chemical sense rather than biological, or I'm just cooked. Is the mesh some sort of filter that allows bacteria to grow on the substrate (host)?

  • Is there genuinely that much severe head trauma in active duty? Assumed hearing damage, PTSD, lacerations and breaks and stuff but figured in armed combat direct blows to the head mightn't be as common. I'm ignorant though, does it happen in training or on base more??

  • You're trying to sell us shoes aren't you Herm. We know you're the protector of thieves and merchants as well as the god of primitive medicine. Anyway yes I'm interested, how much?

  • That's true, I was oversimplifying by focusing on the third but the same applies whether remarks are intended to hurt, be neutral, or explicitly to help - point is people often assume it's the first or respond as if it is. Some people can shrug it off but I can't.

  • No judgement intended but your comment had me thinking "damn, how often must Americans get sick that this is such a problem?" Then I checked myself and realised I have been taking healthcare for granted, and it's not health that we're talking about really but time for being a human - collapsing when you just can't and helping dependents or family when they do the same. This inhuman profit-driven system in your country is attempting to erode what it is to be a human. We'll have to fight, unfortunately, but they will never win.
