Software fixes now account for over 20% of car recalls
  • I do not understand why car manufacturers love touch screens so damn much. My newish car has a nice display screen and on the console by the arm rest is a nice big chunky knob that controls the display interface. There are a couple other physicals controls around it as well. I can control everything without ever looking at the screen. HVAC system, also physical controls.

I have had a few rental cars from different manufacturers and no physical controls anywhere. So it's touch screen only and the screen is not reachable from the driving position without leaning way forward. And of course since it's a touch screen, do you know where my eyes aren't? The fucking road!

Touch screens are annoying and imprecise at the best of times why do they think traveling at speeds in excess of 70 mph that it's better? Make it make sense!

    End Of Rant

  • Young women are more liberal than they’ve been in decades, a Gallup analysis finds
  • Which I find extremely odd, since some traditionally masculine activities are nature oriented. Hunting, fishing, outdoorsy stuff in general. It wasn't that long ago that (environmental) conservation was a huge component of those activities to ensure continued access for people to those activities. Maybe it still is but I certainly don't get that impression as strongly anymore.

  • TIL Disney's Star Wars Hotel was a massive waste of time
  • Disney built its entire empire on existing/public domain stories. Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Robin Hood. The list goes on. Hell even Aladdin is largely located from Middle Eastern fairy tales.

The fact that they're relying on existing IP now is nothing new. It's who they've always been. It's just that they had to buy it since it wasn't already in the public domain.

  • Wikipedia is facing an existential crisis. Can gen Z save it?
  • What I don't understand is how Microsoft has/has Watson which was able to answer questions well enough to go on Jeopardy and dominate. And now, more than a decade later these LLMs absolutely suck at it.

It makes me wonder if Watson was nothing more than a Mechanical Turk because what is out there now seems like a huge step backwards.

  • What other movies wouldn't work today?
  • I think the big difference with Tropic Thunder is that the IDEA of black face is very explicitly the joke. Robert Downey Jr's character and the idea of black face is what is being made fun of.

You might be right that it's a commentary on Westerns, and it went over my head, and maybe because it was made when it was you didn't have to be as explicit with the target of the joke it was just more subtle. The scene certainly doesn't feel hateful, but it's definitely odd to watch today. But given how explicitly the movie is making fun of racists and racism I'm certainly willing to give it some benefit of the doubt.

  • What other movies wouldn't work today?
  • Huh. TIL.

Though the actual argument for why you couldn't make Blazing Saddles now is the the entire genre it's lampooning is dead.

The humor is pretty much still fine and flies, other than Mel playing a Native American, but even that is still kinda-maybe-sorta-okayish-maybe? since Mel's character isn't the butt of the joke, but other than that brief scene I can't recall anything that watching now makes me cringe.

  • Horner pinpoints area McLaren F1 has stolen a march on Red Bull
  • Doesn't really sound like whining to me, at least in this article. Just an acknowledgement that McLaren (and Mercedes) have gotten something right with their front wing design that suits their respective cars.

I do wonder if Red Bull started focusing on next year's car too early in the season thinking it would be a repeat of last year after Max got out to a strong start. Now they are on the back foot as it looks like the constructors could go to McLaren, and if Max has some bad luck (like a DNF or 2) the drivers could get competitive as well.

  • We deserve better.
  • That creates its own potential (unintended) problems. There's no one size fits all solution to gerrymandering.

Dave Wasserman did a really great job going through all sorts of potential solutions and the benefits and flaws.

Short answer, it's complicated. Long answer, read the piece, it's really good.

  • What movies, books or tv shows are meant to spoof/parody a particular genre while actually being a great example of the genre?

The 3 that come to mind for me are Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The Princess Bride. All three are poking fun at their respective genres but also are great examples of the genre. I'm curious if Lemmy has other such examples.
