  • Yep, I've used Podcast Addict for over a decade at this point

  • Yes

    Jump
  • If I had a time machine, I'd go back and kill Helena Blavatsky

  • Like, this is a thing that you'd do for middle school civics. Preschoolers can hardly read.

  • Well, if you can figure it out. I'd love to hear your thoughts, comrade

  • Whiteness isn't simply the physical trait of having pale skin, in the way being tall is a physical trait. An entire social scaffolding has been built around the physical quality of pale skin, that denotes the absence of race, the presence of "normalcy", "purity", "superiority", and therefore a place at the top of a racial hierarchy.

But at the same time, whiteness is like the fucking Borg. In the US especially, the concept of whiteness assimilated a ton of different ethnic groups, robbed them of their language and culture, and left gringos like me with no culture to speak of, beyond getting run over by a Ford F250, while on your way to get a Big Mac.

And there's no real way to recover that cultural identity. Like, ok, I have Irish ancestry, but what does that really mean at this point? No one in my family has spoken Gaelic for generations and St Patrick's Day is just a reason for white people to get hammered. And in many ways, that's a horrendous tragedy, and a deep psychic wound in the minds of the settler population on this continent. There's a reason Americans love Genealogy. It's because they have no actual connection to the land they live on, so they scrape for some past, that the whiteness and colonialism which they benefit from, has also robbed from them.

That said, though I'm white, I'm also bi and trans. My queerness ties me to a history and a culture that's much more tangible then what your average straight, mayo, American has. So while I personally like to joke that "my ethnicity is removed", It's incredibly difficult to "not be white" in that socio-cultural sense. Because whiteness is so all consuming. There's no individual way to "stop being white", the only way forward is to abolish whiteness as a category.

Edit: Mods are erasing my ethnicity! I will not be silenced! /s

  • .....ok but why were they having preschoolers vote in mock elections?

  • Thank you! For anyone else reading this thread, I'd highly recommend Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg, Capitalism and Gay Identityby John D'emilio, and Caliban and The Witch by Sylvia Federici, for good dialectical analyses of capitalism's impact on queer people.

Federici's work focuses on cis women, but makes a good theoretical base that Feinberg builds on, and that leads well into D'emilio's work. So that's the order I'd read them in.

  • LGBT rights weren't on the radar of the average marxist

Plenty of German leftists, Marxist or otherwise signed a petition, in the 1890s, opposing Paragraph 175 of the German Legal code that criminalized homosexuality, including Albert Einstein, August Bebel, and Karl Kautsky.

Queer activists, like Karl Heinrich Ulrichs and Magnus Hirschfeld, actively sought out far left politicians in their attempt to repeal the law.

Bebel, who was the one to sponsor the bill to repeal paragraph 175, continued to be an advocate of women's and queer rights throughout his life and career.

Alexandra Kollontai was Bisexual and opposed the criminalization of homosexuality under Stalin's administration.

Harry Hay, who would found The Mattachine Society, one of the first gay rights groups in the US, was organizing farm workers for the Communist Party as far back as the 1930s.

Queer issues were definitely on the radar of plenty of Socialists in the early 20th century.

This argument gives the same vibes as "but everyone was racist back then!" arguments that American liberals give to hand wave away past injustices.

If we're to be thoughtful dialectical materialists about this: while queerness has always existed, and cultures throughout history have had queer subcultures, such as the Kathoey in Thailand or Molly Houses in England, the development of Capitalism brought with it a trend towards a more systematized, wider reaching regimentation of reproductive labor, then what had been seen under previous forms of class society.

On the one hand, this brought about the categorization and subsequent oppression of queer people. But on the other hand, industrialization brought people into urban areas, socialized labor, and allowed queer people to form larger communities, who could start organizing politically on a large scale.

Since the Soviet Union had not industrialized, that pressure on queer people in the Soviet Union, to organize at a large scale, didn't exist. And the prevalence of queer organizing in the more industrialized west, brought Stalin's administration to make the idealist error that queerness was an outgrowth of "bourgeois decadence", rather than material conditions.

  • His writing is clearer than almost any other Marxist, which imo is another factor

Hot take: I think Stalin is an incredibly mid writer, and Mao is far more clear and easy to understand.

  • It's "just" a video of two trucks, given what the headline claimed.

When I first read the headline, I figured the image would be a kinda jank AI generated picture of Biden bound and gagged. Like... The headline makes it seem like that's the focus of Trumps post.

But it isn't. The focus of the image are the trucks adorned with Trump memorabilia. That's the thing he cares about in this case. The presence of the Chud Tailgate Murder Fantasy is incidental.

And for that matter, what do you mean "normalizing"? This shit is already normal. That's the problem.

  • Right, this shit has already been normalized. We ought to be concerned with how to deal with it.

  • First of all, LOL

    Second of all, LMAO

Third, It's super fucked up that the US names its military helicopters after indigenous people's it genocided, and we don't talk about that enough.

  • Hey man.... You can do that stuff literally anywhere else

  • We can devote our collective attention to multiple things at once. If you don't understand how the US' declining status as the imperial hegemon leads to both domestic tragedies of crumbing infrastructure like this, as well as violent lashings out in places like in the middle east, then you have a piss poor understanding of dialectics.

  • As a dumb dumb who knows nothing about this period of history, why did the church go on a crusade against other Christians? What heresy were they supposedly committing, and what material factors drove the Albigensian Crusade?

  • Can I ask what the book is? I'd love to read more

  • You can also say a lot about stuff like Wicca and its dogshit creator, but I've known a few witches to also get involved in stuff.

As a Wiccan, I can confirm, Gerald Gardner was a weirdo little freak who sucked major ass. He gets credited with codifying the thing we now call Wicca, but his contributions tend to get overblown, since tons of that stuff was done by other people, especially women, who were a part of that movement. Women who were, by and large, cooler than he was.

Also, one of the more important primary source texts that influenced Wicca's development was Aradia, The Gospel of the Witches, wherein the Goddess Diana gives birth to a messianic figure named Aradia, who teaches oppressed peasants how to do magicsl class Warfare, which basically boils down to sabotaging crop yeilds, and poisoning priests and lords. It's incredibly cool and based.

  • Reject modernity, embrace tradition

  • Yeah, it's pretty clear that Nex either preferred different pronouns in different contexts, and/or was in the middle of trying to figure themselves out. And that's really the tragedy here, that we'll never know for sure.

  • Also, it's not like they're ousting fire nation settlers with their civilian killing terrorist tactics. Then you could at least approach the issue with some kind of Fanon-esque view on the violence of the colonized, but that's not what's happening.

They're wiping out an entire earth kingdom village, simply because they think it will take out a small handful of fire nation soldiers in the process.

Jet is definitely an adventurist/wrecker, in the logic of the narrative.
