Do you donate money? How, why, why not?
  • No, but I donate time and sometimes items. I’ve seen how wasteful so many “charities” are. When less than half of what is donated actually goes to the end user that’s a problem. So I donate things that have to go to the end user, or at the very least in support of the end user.

  • To Americans: How far apart is everything in the US?
  • I live pretty close to work, it’s about 15 miles (24 km). Grocery store is about 6 miles (9.6 km) from me. I consider anything within 2 miles (3.2 km) to be “right next door.” It’s not uncommon for me to travel over 100 miles (161 km) in a day. I consider When I want to visit my Sister it’s a 1120 mile (1802 km) journey. That happens a couple times a year. The crazy thing is that that’s less than halfway across the continental US. I have to travel from the Atlantic ocean all the way across the international date line in the Pacific to get across the US, and that doesn’t include our territories, just our states.

What I have found is a better comparison is the US and Europe. Think of the european country’s as us states and you start to get an idea of the scale. 44 countries vs 50 states, $24.22 trillion vs $28.65 trillion GDP, 10.2 million sq km vs 9.8 million sq km. They are very similar.

  • Washing Machine/Dryer Stand
  • You can also get all in one’s that both wash and dry in a single unit if space is a concern. They tend to be a bit pricier because it’s literally two functions in one item but not terrible.

  • Pavlov
  • I first heard of Pavlov from the game incredible machines, where if you dangle a banana in front of a mandrill (looks like a baboon to 6 year old me) he would run on the treadmill giving you power for your machines. So I always think of a baboon when I hear pavlov.

  • Has anyone ever been to a political candidate rally? What was it like?
  • I work AV and have worked many of these events on both sides of the aisle. Presidents, VP’s, presidential hopefuls, the whole gamut. The democrats tend to be less organized but way more friendly and accommodating, the republicans are very their way or the highway, but tend to have all their ducks in a row. As far as attending you hear someone parrot ideas that you’ve already heard before, and either already agree with or don’t. They won’t take any hard stances and are unlikely to answer any questions, if they do they will answer the softball questions and sidestep the hard questions. All in all, largely a waste of time and resources.

The only two that I’ve worked that didn’t fall into that category was beto o’rourke and chris christy. Both of them were very engaging with the audience, were willing to answer hard questions, they actually seemed like they cared, and were doing this for country, not career.

  • For younger generations, what was it like growing up with the internet?
  • Most of the people my age would have been 12-17 before they got home internet, however my dad started the IT department for our state so we had home internet before AOL was doing all of there aggressive marketing. It was also completely unregulated in our house because 1, there weren’t very many tools to regulate at the time, and second, in my dad’s eyes we didn’t have any sensitive data at the house so why worry about security.

Because he started the IT department he also knew when equipment was getting retired and going to government auctions, so he would go and buy computers on the cheap and bring them home. I remember having 3 commodore 64’s in the house, one was my dad’s, one was my sister’s and one was mine. Imagine an era where home computers either weren’t a thing or you had 1 shared family computer, and we had 3 including the 6 year old having their own computer. Now I didn’t have the network card in my computer but I had a computer.

I remember getting windows 95 and finally getting access to the internet. I still had no restrictions, I don’t know if my parents were naive or stupid but an 8 year old does not need unrestricted access to the internet in their bedroom. I saw way to many things that I should not have seen. I got so desensitized to violence that years later when someone got shot outside my apartment I didn’t even register why the police were trying to hide the body. It was just a body, the person’s gone.

I grew up with the internet, not the internet was around before I was around but rather we matured together. The internet you see today would not have survived back then, and the internet that was around back then would not be allowed today. I was on the internet before search engines, before social media, before all of the things we take for granted existed. It is infinitely better, in so many ways, and yet I still long for the days when no one was trying to sell you things, and all anyone wanted to do was either to make you smile and laugh, or make you recoil in horror.

    It was 50/50.

Like I said I got desensitized to a lot.

  • Am I allowed to talk about Russia and Ukraine? Israel and Palestine? Great Britain and Ireland? Australia and some birds?

If something is happening it’s fair game to talk about. We may not be able to fix / change anything, but we can express our opinions on the subject.

  • Locked
    Gatekeep ideas, not people
  • Eh, most of the marketing around ai is complete bullshit, but I do use it on a regular basis for my work. Several years ago it would have just been called machine learning, but it saves me hours every day. Is it a magic bullet that fixes everything? No. But is it a powerful tool that helps speed up the process? Yes.

  • What was the nicest thing you SO has done/said to you?
  • Mine is an odd one, she let the breakup be amicable. It’s never easy to breakup, but our relationship turned into a LDR with a 5 hour time difference. Long distance relationships are never easy but we were giving it an honest shot. Eventually we both knew it was time, but neither of us wanted it to end. When the idea was floated that this could be coming to an end she insisted that we don’t blame ourselves but rather the circumstances. Our last date was both of us updating each other’s dating profiles.

We’re still friends, we still talk, I was at her wedding a few years ago, and the man she’s with is an amazing man, I wish them the best. It was an issue of circumstance, not compatibility, and of all the relationships I’ve been in that is the only one that I do not blame either myself, or my partner for the breakup.

  • What's the most petty/pointless/pedantic hill you're willing to die on?
  • But hot dogs aren’t sandwiches they’re tacos. It perfectly logical to describe a hot dog as an American taco. If there were no taco items on the table and you asked for a taco I’d think you were being funny, but I’d pass you the hot dog.

  • What's one brand whose products you can always trust?
  • I’ll be honest, just recently bought new shoes from them haven’t gotten a chance to wear them in yet, the previous pair was pre-covid. But they look and feel exactly like my old pair did when I bought them, so maybe their work line hasn’t suffered yet.

And this is why I’ll never be loyal to a brand, as long as they’re good I’ll keep buying their product, when it’s not good I’ll stop.

  • What's one brand whose products you can always trust?
  • I will never always trust a brand, there are some brands that have good trust, but I’ve seen too many brands screw people over for money.

I will say currently, Darn Tough Socks, Keen Shoes, EVGA, Milwaukee Tools, if you are in the cinema / live production world Teradek, and Yamaha.

  • Thoughts on EV motorcycles?
  • Have an EV, used to have a motorcycle, never had an EV motorcycle. I was looking into getting one after my bike died, and after taking a test ride, it did not feel like a motorcycle, it felt like a really fast scooter. Now this was 6 years ago, they may have changed some things but if you are used to a motorcycle, it doesn’t feel like that. If you’ve never had a motorcycle, or it’s been a while, it might work for you. If it’s a utility thing it will probably work way better, it was a fun chill thing for me, so feel was way more important.

Cars are a lot easier to make feel like an ICE because you aren’t literally straddling the motor, a bike you are way more connected, so changing the feel has way more of an impact. Schedule a test ride and see if you like it.
