Home server recommendations?
  • Thank you for your insight! I've been playing with the idea of getting a retired tower from my workplace to mess around with so it's nice knowing that's a valid path. Once I've secured some hardware and done some research on set-up I'll be sure to report back (probably with more questions)!

  • Home server recommendations?

    Good day people!

(This paragraph is fluff, feel free to skip) First I'd like to thanks everyone who has answered my questions thus far. A of now I'm daily driving CachyOS on my "laptop" and Bazzite on my gaming PC. I've settled on Hyprland after running with sway for a few days and have been forcing myself to solve problems and do file management using the CLI exclusively (excluding firefox for duckduckgoosing help). I've gotten semi-comfortable manipulating files, but haven't had to do anything too skill intensive yet.

On to the question! I am currently looking to set up a home server. My use case is for storing media, specifically videos (for watching) and game Roms (for playing older games on emulator). With this use case in mind, what's a good resource to learn how to get started? For those who have home servers set up with similar purposes, how did you arrive at your current set-up? What considerations should i take before, during, and after set-up?

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thank in advance! Hope to hear from you all soon!

How do YOU customize your terminal?
  • Thanks for the post! Never would've known about Starship. Your setup seems a bit feature-rich for me at the moment but it's nice knowing its an option.

I tried light theme for 0.000000128 seconds, and in that time my eyeballs melted out of my head and onto my keyboard.

  • How do YOU customize your terminal?

    Good day all!

First I'd like to thank all the people who replied to my first post and provided so much valuable information! Since then I've been trying to force myself to get comfortable with using the terminal! To this end I've been running Sway as my Desktop Environment and printed out a cheat sheet to place next to my screen.

Now, a paragraph deep, for the question(s):

How do y'all customize your terminals? I'm not looking for tutorials, just your preferences. How long did it take for you to settle on your favourite? What did you prioritize when customizing? What customization are you fondest of?

Thanks in advance to any and all replies, hope to hear from you all soon!

    Learning Linux, next steps?
  • Thanks for mentioning homelab. They seem quite useful from a quick search. If you remember your first setup, what hardware did you settle on and why? What has changed since? Any pains along the way?

  • Learning Linux, next steps?
  • Thanks for this. I've been eyeing archinstall but have held off until i find a cheap desktop to "destroy" testing things out.

I've given Debian a spin and honestly don't care too much for it, probably due to my first exposure to linux being arch-based (I refuse to say "I use arch btw" until i have more than a layman's idea of everything). My experience with Fedora is limited to flashing Bazzite on my Steam Deck yesterday, so I'm still feeling around.

I have a device running Ubuntu for my PiHole and that's about it.

This is the first time I've heard of TheLinuxExperiment, looks interesing so I'll be sure to give it a watch on my off time.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to type this out. Cheers!

  • Learning Linux, next steps?
  • Not trying to change anything for the sake of change. The intent of my question was to try and get insight from people more experienced/knowledgeable than me on how to deepen my knowledge. So far distro-hopping and initial troubleshooting has been fun.... and time consuming.

Currently I'm in surface deep, looking to expand my horizons, and turning to the community for their two cents.

  • What method/software do you use to create/manage your backups? No need to get into the weeds if you don't want to, I'll look up the specifics on my own.

What's a mistake you made, if any, when backing up your systems?

I've actually been on the hunt for a cheap desktop to turn into a media server but everyone around me is overvaluing their 12 year old hardware, might just bite the bullet and make one myself.

  • Where do you get your tea?
  • I was just putting out a feeler to see what the popular options are at the moment. Loose leaf tea is preferable as I'd like to get some mileage out of this teapot I was gifted.

I'll have to prowl some of the Asian supermarkets then. I completely overlooked this, thanks for mentioning.

I second you on the Celestial Seasons peppermint btw, stuffs tasty.

  • Where do you get your tea?

    Good day all!

I haven't been into tea since Starbucks bought my favourite tea store quite a while back. looking to get back into regularly brewing some. West coast USA here if that helps narrow it down.

    Thanks in advance.

    Learning Linux, next steps?
  • Thanks for the reply.

I'm guessing systems tend to lose stability over time? What's something that broke that you've had to fix in the past that sticks out in your mind, doesn't matter the reason.

  • Learning Linux, next steps?

    Good day all,

I'm currently about 3 months into using Linux exclusively for personal computing and gaming. I stared out trying EndeavourOs /w the Linux Surface kernel on my Surface, having now settled on Manjaro on my surface and CachyOS on my gaming rig.

So far the experience has been relatively painless. Now, having settled down comfortably into a rhythm of running sudo pacman -Syu, getting lost in the AUR and wiki, I feel like exploring more into what Linux has to offer.

So, on to my question, what do i do now? There's a bit of choice paralysis for me. Where did you all decide to dig in first? What resources did you use? What projects did you take on to deepen your knowledge? What do you feel is essential for crossing the threshold from average user to almost-superuser, then from there and beyond?

Thanks in advance for your time. Hope to hear from you all soon.
