  • I am probably the perfect google customer. I used google search when it still had an exclamation point. I got my gmail account by invite in ‘04. Downloaded chrome on day one. I used nexus/pixel phones almost exclusively

Today, ddg search on Firefox. I am using an iPhone. I still have the gmail account but I am slowly migrating away from it. I am done with google. They don’t produce anything that has any value for me anymore.

  • Alright. Your definitions are fine, correct even. But…

In American press, liberal means left. Full stop. You’re a socialist? American press will call you “extremely liberal”. American readers will understand that.

I get that your would like to use the definition of the word that has global application. Doesn’t matter. In the us, liberal means left.

This article is about left leaning orgs donating to conservative causes and the comments are worrying what liberal means.

  • Alternate title: “A man child realizes that society imposes roles on people based on gender and throws an ill-advised tantrum about the roles assigned to him.”

A male human is pretty much solely judged on his ability to be strong and independent. Men crowing about their prowess in those skills is pretty much the basis of the human mating ritual for as long as we have existed.

In the past 100yrs we have been eroding the strictness of those roles and women are now also allowed to take pride in those characteristics.

Ken needs to sit the fuck down now.

  • If you ever needed a lesson in the difference between power and authority, this is a good one.

The leaders of this coup read the rules and saw that they could use the board to remove Altman, they had the authority to make the move and “win” the game.

It seems that they, like many fools mistook authority for power. The “rules” said they could do it! Alas they did not have the power to execute the coup. All the rules in the world cannot make the organization follow you.

Power comes from people who grant it to you. Authority comes from paper. Authority is the guidelines for the use of power, without power, it is pointless.

  • Can’t disagree more. The dude isn’t some mystical hypnotist, he is his own worst enemy. Frankly, I think the only reason he has any shot is that twitter banned him and the public has no reminder of how crazy he is day to day.

If OJs trial wasn’t the center of attention all America would know is that he was acquitted. Instead everyone understands that he got away with murder. He be doing tv ads and smiling from magazine covers today.

  • Why would I buy one right now? The tech is immature and overpriced. The benefit is moving emissions from my tailpipe to the coal and natural gas electricity facilities in my area. The extreme size of EVs for sale now means I’m not really cutting my carbon output compared to my compact ice.

According to the research paper I read a few months ago, based on the North American electric fuel mix, EVs produce about 50% of the carbon per mile compared to ICE pound for pound. The only ICE vehicles that weigh that like a rivian get 12mpg. All that money and your carbon output still looks like a midsize SUV…

Electric drivetrain is almost certainly the future but I feel zero compulsion to spend my money on these intermediate steps. Thanks everyone who is rich enough or dumb enough to support the development I guess. If you care about emissions, buy a bolt (or a Prius), the rest of the US EV fleet is capitalist dick measuring.

  • Stardew Valley will probably be the game that looms largest in my kid’s nostalgia. They have both played the life out of that thing. Other things that come to mind: Minecraft, phasmaphobia, fnaf, Skyrim, duck game, BOTW, and Nidhogg 2.

There is no guiding aesthetic driven by the technology, just whatever is available and cool.

Re: loot boxes, there is no denying that fortnight is(was?) a huge deal in this gen of kids. I’m sure at least some kids are going to have fond memories of getting v bucks for their birthday.

  • This is my operating theory as well. That coupled with decades of media convincing them that “the kids” are lazy, unreliable, and taken with strange ideas leads them to believe that they cannot responsibly turn the nation over to us.

  • Right wing kooks using the word woke is actually pretty funny. The rest of us are just out here thinking that perhaps everyone should be able to live with a modest amount of dignity and these dudes think it’s some magic spell we’re chanting.

Fuggen’ “wokeism” kills me every time! What on earth does that mean to them??

  • Every single person alive lives on land that has been “stolen” at least a time or two in our history. Focusing only on the horror of Europeans colonization is just one more way in which white people put themselves at the center of the human story.

I assure you that people with skin of every color have fought wars of conquest. It is not some special trick that only white Europeans could do.

  • It’s like the country can’t even imagine a younger person being credible for the jobs anymore. No matter where you are on the political spectrum, America has an 80yr old man for you to vote for!

  • It’s fashionable to boil everything down to class warfare but this struggle is generational in a way that seems important. It’s probably not even fair to look at this like a systemic problem. We have an older generation that is fighting with everything they have to prevent power and wealth flowing to their children’s cohort. That’s not just “capitalism”. That is a unique pathology. I struggle to see analogs in history of this sort of thing.

  • I hate YouTube so fucking much. The internet was once a useful place where you could find the instructions for anything you could dream. Now it is a wasteland of SEO laden video. Google is a bloated stinking corpse and its rot is befouling the whole internet. Being “evil” was a distraction, being useless is the bigger crime.

  • Ok, what is the joke? I think the creator thinks that it’s funny to have an extreme reaction (murder) to a minor infraction (liking the wrong kind of food).

If you (like the creator) believe that the idea of “liking the wrong foods” will resonate with an audience as a social infraction. Well, ffs let people live their lives.

The premise for the joke is obnoxious.

  • I would never defend Israel’s shitty colonialist behavior over the last 7 decades. A horrible colonialist idea followed by generations of stupid mistakes and vile actions.

The question was “when is the world going to put a stop to this”. The answer seems to be that “the world” is going to let Israel attempt to dislodge Hamas. Eliminating Hamas is going to be a disgusting bloodbath and probably will just sew the seeds of the next conflict. The alternative is telling the Israeli people that they deserve to having Viking raiders pillaging the borders because the antisemitic leaders of “the greatest generation” picked a pretty horrible solution to what they called “the Jewish question”.

No good answers, no good guys.

  • Engaging groups like Hamas, isis, or other groups that are highly integrated into the civilian population is ugly business. Hamas is not a conventional state actor with military assets on bases or mobilized for action. It’s uncles and sons and brothers in the homes of family.

The carnage in Gaza is horrifying, but Hamas isn’t likely to form lines and face the IDF in honorable field combat.

Removing the threat posed by Hamas will have an absolutely horrific cost in civilian lives. After oct 7, “the world” seems to agree that Israel has some right to remove that threat. Hamas leadership crossed a line, and like all war the cost will primarily be paid by the ordinary people who were unlucky enough to be born in the war zone.

  • A claim that we have a computing model that shares a design with the operation of a biological brain is philosophical and conjecture.

If we had a theory of mind that was complete, it would simply be a matter of counting up the number of transistors required to approximate varying degrees of intelligence. We do not. We have no idea how the computational meat we all possess enables us to translate sensory input into a contiguous sense of self.

It is totally valid to believe that ML computing is a match to the biological model and that it will cross a barrier at some point. But it is a belief that does not support itself with empirical evidence. At least not yet.

  • Either ML is going to scale in an unpredictable way, or it is a complete dead end when it comes to artificial intelligence. The “godfathers” of ai know it’s a dead end.

Probabilistic computing based on statistical models has value and will be useful. Pretending it is a world changing AI tech was a grift from day 1. The fact that art, that cannot be evaluated objectively, was the first place it appeared commercially should have been the clue.
