  • There was a thread going around on Bluesky a while back about how the reason we had so many good Grunge bands in the 80's/90's is because it was entirely possible to make a living off of a part-time income back then. Thirty years ago the dirtbag lifestyle was as feasible as supporting two families on one full-time income. Then rents skyrocketed with the advent of Realpage price fixing, minimum wage stagnated, jobs dried up or cut back, and suddenly everyone's focused on surviving shit life syndrome. Is it any wonder the only artists these days who can survive long enough to get popular are the ones who already have means?

  • God yeah caving is such a bad idea unless it's already confirmed safe to be in. In addition to the well-publicized risk of getting stuck in a pocket with the blood pooling to your head, you've got collapses and cave-ins, wild animals, noxious gasses, lack of air circulation, there are so many reasons not to go into a cave you don't already know is safe.

  • Honestly I can't remember the last time my life was on "Play." I've been stuck in the same job so long it's had two name changes and an acquisition since I started. It's decent money and I can tolerate the work which is largely why I'm still there, because almost everyone I knew when I started has left or been fired. And I'm so afraid that if I leave or get let go I won't be able to find anything else because the job market's been absolute dogshit.

I've been experimenting with my gender presentation. I did a full body shave and picked up a skirt. I don't think it's helped me feel better about my body. I just kind of want to be a brain in a jar or a stuffed animal or something that doesn't look like a complete pile of shit no matter how it's dressed up.

  • Yeah. Clearly the only thing that matters is money, if we're meant to idolize these ghoulish billionaires. My country should be proud of me following the example they set of selling out everyone they can in the name of the almighty dollar.

  • So, I agree with the principle of your statement but the point that the discussion around the original post makes is that the writing is largely inextricable from the politicized plot of the middle-aged divorced alcoholic amnesiac cop.

Like, the whole reason you spend the better part of the game reconstructing your ideology around neoliberalism, fascism, communism, or centrism is because the world around you has failed you in such spectacular fashion, as it has literally everyone else in Martinaise, and while I'd agree that the expression of that sentiment shouldn't just be restricted to a middle-aged cishet white guy, it would be a wasted effort in a game about finding your cat in a village in the alps which is, per the post's complaints, ostensibly apolitical.

  • Oh, you mean the oligarchy that put Trump in the office the first time? The one that put you in the office after Trump completely fucked up the economy? The one that's been selecting both presidential candidates for the last, oh, I don't know, five decades? Six? Longer, probably? The one that's been crushing the spirit of every living person around the world with the promise of a meager subsistence life, and that's if they like you or you're convenient to their ends? And they'll throw you on the pyre of capitalism if it earns them a single cent more? That oligarchy?

Yeah, sure. Thanks for giving it the old college try, Joe.

  • You say that like any of the conservative controlled courts give a single flying fuck about precedent. They will embrace this ruling to foist religious doctrine on people who don't want it and reject it to prohibit any other material they find unsavory, in the same breath, even. The rule of law has been dead for a long time in the states.

  • I mean, that's kind of the point, right? Workers that are well rested tend to be more productive, so 4 10s kind of defeats the purpose of the 4 day week - notwithstanding that you do get the extra day off, you're that much more burnt out because you had even less time to take care of yourself the preceding 4 days.

  • True, but iPads don't have inbuilt controllers, and packing one would inherently make it less portable than a deck. I think if you're making a portable gaming system, your maximum screen size is sharply constrained by the form factor of the controller around it.

  • Which is entirely intentional on the part of the people who actually run this country. Uneducated citizens who don't or can't think critically are very easy to spoon-feed bullshit against their best interests. Republicans have been openly attacking public education for decades on behalf of Rupert Murdoch and friends, and at the same time parents have been foisting the rearing of their children off on educators because they work two or more jobs to support the household. The community mentality has entirely eroded as a result - nobody will step up to take care of neglected children because everyone's too busy working, educators come under attack from both parents and administration for trying to be anything more than state-sanctioned babysitters, leading to mass resignations, reinforcing the idea that education should be privatized and/or run off of a bullshit voucher system.

America failed a long time ago, it's just a question of who realizes it and who doesn't. If you want to live through the next couple of decades, start building your communities ASAP. Mutual funds, community gardens, canning and other food preservation. Unionize, coordinate, run for office if you think you can hack it.

  • 1 in 5 on lucky cards is a damn lie too. I had it on like nine cards in my deck, played them at least three dozen times over the course of four antes after I started counting, not once did the +20 proc. .03% chance. .03%. Call me a walking debacle, god only knows why I play games of chance.

  • Any of the fallout/elder scrolls series. I remember whiling so many hours away in them as a kid and having a great time, and now any time I pick them up it just feels like a second job, looting and managing inventory ad nauseum.

  • Yeah, most of the time when I get asked for windows help it's with the subtext that windows is just a piece of shit OS that gets in the way of what they want to do more often than not, and it's like, Linux at this point will handle 95% of what you want to do. As you said, Gaming, at least with newer and mainstream titles, and web browsing are easy money, word processing/spreadsheets are mostly covered with LibreOffice and the like. The GUI's a little different but the fact that most distros have one is enough to convince a lot of people to switch.

The professional world might be stuck on Windows for a while just because it's the norm and most businesses want plug-and-play, but there's few reasons for personal computing to live in Windows anymore.

  • I snuggle with one every night, it's the best, my bed is full of plushies and sqishmallows and it's exactly as comfortable as it sounds. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner.
