  • Yeah I have done just about everything except crack and had years-long habits with a number of them. I had to piece together a new personally when I quit hard drugs. I quit cigs during COVID. But alcohol is just so baked into society and such an easy way to help cope with capitalism that I find it hard to imagine ever completely quitting drinking.

  • Yeah so weird he said "an Intercept guy who reports from Gaza" instead of "Ryan Grim from Drop Dead News (formerly of The Intercept)" considering the whole point of them appearing on the pod was to announce the new site

  • I had a roommate who barged into my room in the middle of the night because he was sure that one of my other roommates was blasting rap music whos lyrics were all about him, and that there were a bunch of other people in her room with her laughing along with it. I went upstairs and there was silence. I had to calmly tell him he was hearing things, and that nothing of the sort was happening. I knew he had recently decided to quit drinking because he'd slept through an alarm and his job threatened him. Thankfully, I had another roommate awakened by the hub bub and the two of us talked him down and the next morning he checked into a hospital. He was there for five days, over Thanksgiving. He told me he didn't even realize what day it was and was just pleasantly surprised they gave him turkey. It's scary but hopefully you can find a way to get them resources to get over the initial withdrawals and stay clean.

Just remember Amy Winehouse didn't die from an OD, she died from alcohol withdrawal

  • My favorite recent example of that was a Politico article about members of the DNC becoming worried Biden won't win re-election. I decided to wade into /r/politics for the first time in probably 5 years just to see their reaction. Every comment dismissing the polling numbers and painting the article as hyped-up nonsense for clicks. From the same people who love sharing any poll that says "X% of Republicans won't vote for Trump"

  • I don't think documentation is really necessary when pretty much all media in the US portrays white, young, thin, slightly athletically toned, clear-skinned, white-toothed, symmetrical-faced people with societally-approved matching gender characteristics as "attractive". Characters who exhibit those traits are portrayed/coded as attractive, and they are the people put in front of the camera on things like the news. Just saying "attractive" when talking about someone with those features is basically saying that anyone who does not have those features is inherently not attractive, when in reality many people have different opinions on what they find attractive.
