  • Nope. The premise is they pwn ANOTHER, less secure, personal device and use the camera from the DIFFERENT device to pwn your work computer. For example, by silently installing Pegasus on some cocky "security is dumb lol" employee's 5 year out-of-date iphone via text message while they're sleeping, and use the camera from that phone to recon the password.

They probably wouldn't want the $3.50 that person has in their bank account, but ransoming corporate data pays bank, and wire transfering from a corporate account pays even better! If you're in a highly privileged position, or have access to execute financial transactions at a larger company, pwning a personal device isn't outside of the threat model.

Most likely that threat model doesn't apply to you, but perhaps at least put it under the keyboard out of plain sight?

  • Misunderstood STIG from the sound of it. The STIG is only applicable to unprivileged users but tends to get applied to all workstations regardless of user privileges. Also I think the .mil STIG GPOs apply it to all workstations regardless of privileges.

The other thing that tends to get overlooked is that AC-12 let's you set it to whatever the heck you want. Ao you could theoretically set it to 99999 year by policy if you wanted.

  • That's more than a bit of a reductionist view of Buffalo Bill. I think there might be a considerable amount of nuance that you're ignoring about him that you could glean from just reading his wiki[1]. Not saying he's a beacon of morality and ethics, but he wasn't just a racist with a stage show either.

  • Fair enough! I should've said, and have corrected it to, reactionaries.

Also I didn't really mean it in as US centric way hence saying conservatives rather than Republicans. More of the philosophy of conservativism instead of the political oriented conservatives. You know, trying to maintain old institutions at all costs, automatically assuming new institutions are not as good, only finding faults in new methods/institutions while ignoring the faults with the old, etc.

  • Reddit, youtube, and tiktok are quickly becoming the new, "video games cause violence" cry from reactionaries. Hell you see people here claiming tiktok is going to make all the kids have 2 second attention spans. It's all just scapegoats for other systematic failures in culture, education, and social saftey nets, but those are hard to fix. Easier to just blame the platform and not make any real changes.

  • I don't know if you can draw those exact parallels, and I think it's trivializing the plot a bit to just "ignore all that sci-fi stuff," but it has been confirmed by the Lily that it was at least partially on her mind when writing the Matrix:

She [Lily] added that she didn't know how present her transness was in her mind as they were writing the movie, but that much of the desire for transformation in the films stemmed from her closeted point of view at the time. [1]

There's a lot to unpack in the above comment, and claiming that being CIS removes all the problems of the world is more than mildly naive as well, but there's for sure a lot of lgbtq+ messaging in the Matrix, and it doesn't take a great leap to see it either.

  • People might laugh or discount your comment, and you might've made it in jest, but that's probably one of the biggest hurdles that the anti-car crowd refuses to take seriously. Americans love cars, and a lot of Americans for sure love gigantic monstrosity tricked out cars. We have songs about trucks, guns, and Jesus, and you can bet your ass those things are the same level of special for a lot of people.

I personally would love to see viable public transportation, but you're going to have to change culture which isn't as easy as, "We built some nice trains and buses! Now everyone use those instead!" You're going to have to convince the gun toting, Jesus loving, jacked up Ford F-450 Super Duty owners to give up a huge piece of their personality. And from what I can tell that hasn't been working out so great with guns. Maybe we can write a nice country songs about riding trains and buses? We used to have a few of those.

  • Poor Keanu Reaves gave up his childhood memories in Johnny Mnemonic to store something like 100GB of data in his brain. I don't remember the Star Trek storage callout cause they were generally pretty good about just fabricating their own units for stuff (future sci-fi writers should take note, it's always easier to make up units then deal with pedantic people on the internet).

  • I for sure agree that it goes against the spirit of Net Neutrality. I also think it would be interesting to hear what a court would say. I don't think you're outright wrong or anything. I just think it's sitting on the knifes edge. The fact that Ukraine doesn't have net neutrality means we'll never really know (At least I hope something like this doesn't happen again in our lifetimes or ever!)

And yeah, I certainly think the Ukrainian people have every right to want to see keel hauled for this, but I also don't think they have the luxury of makinng enemies at the current juncture. Musk is a giant piece of shit for cutting Star Link during a critical operation. He's a giant piece of shit for a lot of other reasons too, but this one kind of takes a giant piece of the shit cake...

I just think Ukraine is in a very tough spot with him. Even more awkward given that he's a single crackpot that has shown to be ready and willing to throw a monkey wrench in their operations because he felt like it.

  • treason (noun): The betrayal of allegiance toward one's own country, especially by committing hostile acts against it or aiding its enemies in committing such acts.

You can't commit treason against a country if you aren't a citizen of that country by definition.

  • No he's not by definition. He isn't Ukrainian so he can't commit treason against the Ukrainian people. He didn't commit any treasonous acts against the US or our allies here either (Ukraine is not an US ally last I checked).

I despise Musk and pretty much everything he stands for. I think it's borderline societal insanity to allow private industry to put satellites in space and think it takes a certain kind of awful megalomaniac to think they can control that infrastructure single handedly. But saying he's treasonous for this? That cheapens the word when you use it against people that ARE treasonous. For instance when certain ex-Presidents decide to steal classified documents despite numerous warnings...

  • As far as I know Ukraine doesn't have any net neutrality regulations. Since net neutrality is per country then I think it's sort of a moot point. I also think you'd have a hard time arguing that pulling the plug violates net neutrality. You're effectively treating all traffic the same in that there is no more traffic. I do think it would be interesting to see how that would play out though.

Aside from that Ukraine would have to go after Musk for it. Which seems like a really bad idea if you want to remain in favor with the increasingly unstable power broker that controls the infrastructure you need.
