  • You‘re great! I recently made a complaint with the eu for apples „need mac to extract iphone passwords“. Lets see how that goes.

One of the rare moments I really like to live in the EU!

  • Thanks. I find the gall of some people surprising. Thats why I always use „hide my email“ and some random names for things that I don’t intend on using like one time signups for whitepapers. These people are indoctrinated to put money over people. You wont change them but you can just act in bad faith as they do.

  • I‘m really sorry but I don’t have the time to sift through walls of text all the time. I appreciate your effort though.

    Have a good one.

  • Thank you for explaining. This helps me understand both his and this here situation.

First of all, I‘m totally ok with it being absurd. It was my impression that this person has been wronged and should be appropriately compensated for their (shit ton of) work. From the text, it seemed like there is a way to get this compensation (in the form of recognition of some sort).

I‘m totally fine with being told that he misrepresented the situation and he‘s more going off a principle here which would never be enforceable. If there were such a „standard“ for recognition for kernel controbution, one could definitely try to enforce it.

In general, I have no problem with standing corrected. What I do have a problem with is the way people in IT centric communities on lemmy (and reddit) behave in general.

Obviously you were kind enough to explain instead and without being violent or abusive. I highly respect that. Thanks again.

  • The person who shamelessly took their work and profited from it (in reputation). Who else?

  • Hi there! I‘m not good at pointing out patterns or solutions instantaneously so I‘ll just provide you with the stuff I do. I don’t have adhd to my knowledge but I do struggle with schedules at times.

So, what I do as hobbies to feel better:

    • take a walk along a specific route, either with someone or with music on my ears
    • if I‘m able to walk many days in succession, I attempt light running, which sometimes works and can lead to a hobby
    • if I‘m in pain often, I rather go swimming in a swimming hall. Repetitive swimming motions make my brain go in trance mode. Thats really cool. The secret is to swim slow enough to not have to stop.
    • If I don’t feel like going out at all, I try to do light yoga, I listen to yoga with adrian on youtube.
    • when I need to see humans (which I try to avoid actively) I do dnd campaigns irregularly or visit a games workshop.

As you can see, I‘m totally okay alone and try not to be with people as we tend to hurt eachother. If I need to, I select them individually. I don’t do groups, ever.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks for mentioning that. I left the communities that employ them but your solution makes more sense.

  • I would absolutely try to sue in this case. My experiences with very experienced specialists is not stellar at all. The amount of gatekeeping and sheer arrogance is frightening. I get it, nobody wants to work on the kernel. It’s an underpaid (presumably) and underappreciated task. I would probably become an asshole as well if I dedicated 90% of my free time to fixing obscure bugs in even more obscure architecture.

Disclaimer: I‘m not a kernel dev and my experience stems from interactions with maybe 100 people of varying stages of proficiency. Sadly, the more proficient, the less friendly they often were.

Edit: the amount of downvotes you get for saying something unpopular without being violent or abusive is showing the lack of guts to discuss something in a civilized manner. Shame on you.

  • You realize that you are using abusive language while accusing me of being a terrible communicator? That is absolutely ironic.

Secondly, I solely reserved myself from being violently corrected in my opinion/experience by a person who does not show any credentials to do so and uses abusive speech. It’s a security function, nothing else.

You can try and turn this around all you want. It’s like telling a person of color that their account or opinion about people of color is shit while not at all having a say in that matter.

Gatekeeping, in opposition to your opinion, is keeping someone from a community, denying them rights or identity. Source: urban dictionary. You are trying to force your opinion on someone who is telling you that they are not accepting that unless you show that you have reason for this behavior.

I would not accept your opinion solely based on your way of communicating it but I would consider trying to to look past that if you had shown anything resembling experience.

I‘m sorry if this is not understandable for you. I really tried. Have a good one.

  • Oh! Ok. Thanks for explaining. I didn’t get that. :)

  • I have to disagree here.

You‘re making a lot of assumptions here that are not easily connected imo.

Stress being a good motivator is correct but on relative terms. Too much stress destroys you and people have been a lot more productive back then comparing labor that they are today. Most people move away from grueling manual labor which you can see in the ongoing shortages in labor intensive jobs such as carpentry (which I have worked in in the past btw). There is no evidence that reducing stress would be a bad thing.

Also, it feels to me as if you‘re trying to apply the things I‘ve said to your model of thinking instead of trying to understand my way of thinking, experience and therefore why I come to the conclusions I do. A typical problem of our stressed times.

What I‘m trying to say is that the stress level has been a lot lower in all past times and you can see psychiatric medication and stress diseases skyrocketing for a couple years if not decades.

We are playing a dangerous shell game of distracting each other and ourselves from the facts that we can’t become more productive without sacrificing our freedom and our sanity.

And stuff has not become cheaper and we are not earning more. That is complete and utter bs. Buying a cell phone (which you now need for work whatsapp groups) is becoming more and more expensive, tvs tripled in price. There even are lists you can look at. The average inflation has been nearly 2 digits for the past couple of years.

There are interesting charts showing the comparison of wages to inflation and they‘re shocking.

So frankly, I find it a little upsetting that you would say the extreme opposite. I would call this disinformation.

  • Thank you for using less violent speech this time. I still don’t understand why you feel like you need to correct my opinion here. Again, if you‘re on the spectrum or an expert, feel free to identify yourself. Otherwise I will stay by my opinion. Have a good one.

  • We have a sane person in this comment section! I love it. Can you please run for some public office?

  • Thanks for your thoughts. I simply disagree. Being autistic means something else for every person who fits the description and for me it is this.

Attacking my personal understanding and using the wording you do is overreaching and mean. Instead of telling me to not say something, you could ask what I meant or how I arrived to this conclusion. But you chose not to.

If you are either a psychologist or an autistic person, you may speak about your own ideas. If not, I ask you to leave autistic people talking about the experience of being autistic be.

  • We absolutely can. Break up every company at 999 mil and we‘re golden. It’s the lack of competition that makes enshittification possible.

  • If you start reading about autistic people, you will most likely hear a couple things very often. It’s not a law as every autistic person is different but three common things I hear and read often are:

    • thruthful to a the point of rudeness
    • often use logic where most people would use gut feeling or intuition
    • have a particular knack for justice, often in a binary sense

Obviously, there are a lot of other things that can identify or sum up autistic people but these fit the situation I‘m talking about. One more may be useful: we don’t suffer from the so called „framing effect“ where neurotypical people would make two different decisions on the same question according to the situation they’re in. Most autistic dont do this. We look at a problem without considering our current situation. Some say thats why we are less likely to become corrupt. We couldn’t care less if our friend really likes to work in our company. If someone else is better suited, he gets hired, for example.

  • The problem is: intelligence doesn’t help either. Sure, it lets you grasp problems pretty fast, makes you a good learner but do you have any ideas how many psychopaths are actually gifted?

As an autistic individual, I‘d say the autistic way would be pretty awesome as a government. You have to tell the truth and are not allowed to care how anyone receives it (what could go wrong, right?). I‘m obviously joking, mostly. I‘d explore it though.

I think the current way is the worst (turning more populist every day) because the majority of people is rather unintelligent and does not have a logical concept on life (from an autistic standpoint).

  • I agree. I‘d use another example like butterfly swimming. It is achievable through training but unless you really have the time, physique and dedication it is futile. Same goes for autistic people being told to read the room. Most of us lack the required synapses (so to speak) and although we could probably get there by training, it is a skill we don’t need as much as we need to make ourselves food or clean the apartment which also some of us struggle with. So maybe, if we have spare time after learning the other stuff, our much needed downtime, if we feel like it (this is a nicely worded fuck off to the person telling us to learn it).

  • I‘m a little surprised by the sheer size of your comment. Thank you for your effort.

I agree that there are many good ideas and nuances to use in this situation. I really like how much thought you‘ve put into it.

Where I don’t agree is the 100 yrs ago theme. You‘re taking what I said and interpret it in a way I didn’t intend. I meant we as people should become less productive and neither we as a population nor living like 100 yrs ago.

Example: being less productive as in not being on the phone with a customer while driving to work alone in your own car so as to be there early, able to pick something up your boss demands and making sales for the company but instead waiting for the bus, not being on the phone and not slaving for your boss while on unpaid time.

Does this example make more sense?

And being less productive does not mean we have no modern medicine, cutting edge computers but less luxury. The vast majority of our surplus productivity goes into the 1% and luxury items. Yachts, Jewelry, etc. part of this surplus happens because both people in a 2 person household work and still get along the same or less than 1 earner households did back in the 70s.
