I'm waiting to see him elected and some kind of action on his promises before I get excited. This just feels so much like 2008, when we had a young, handsome, charismatic man running for president also making extravagant promises. (Who then ruled as a conservative and a warmonger.)
it becomes a form of censorship when snall websites and forums shut down because they don’t have the capacity to comply.
In this scenario that's not a consideration.
We're talking about algorithmically-driven content, which wouldn't apply to Lemmy, Mastodon, or many mom-and-pop sized pages and forums. Those have human moderation anyway, which the big sites don't. If you're making editorial decisions by weighting algorithmically-driven content, it's not censorship to hold you accountable for the consequences of your editorial decisions. (Just as we would any major media outlet.)
Probably a tad premature, but if Mamdani wins the NYC mayorship and then actually does what he says he's going to do, I'll be willing to concede it's something of a turning point. Right now all we have is a young handsome man with personal charisma and a whole lot of great promises.
We had that same thing in 2008, and every one of those promises was broken even though that man had the power to make real change.
Absolutely. There's a part of me that wants to believe "this isn't who we are", but, with kidnapping victims detainees being murdered in ICE custody and people likely being murdered in our gulag in El Salvador (not that we'll ever learn about it), it's an eminently fair statement.
Not to mention that half of the people on SCOTUS outright lied repeatedly about their principles and values during their Senate confirmation hearings. They don't deserve an iota of respect from good, reasonable people.
From where I'm sitting, this motherfucker deserves way more criticism and way more interrupted sleep after spending the last term paving the way for rule by fiat and doing absolutely nothing meaning to stop the speedrunning of 1939-style fascism in the US.
That book is partly why I oppose all war. The film Netflix produced of it a few years ago is pretty amazing too. The cinematography is almost too beautiful given the subject matter.
Or just not?
We didn't need that much detail to put two and two together.
