  • I feel like the announcement could've been done with a bit of a heads up (if only to give mods time to decide and prep on their side) but I guess it's not really a super serious event.

Initiative itself is great, hopefully winners come up with some decent charities. Let the spam engagement begin!

  • Yeah, it's not a huge difference - just the vertical line on the left side of the quoted section (at least on Lemmy). It's most noticeable in the first Majikoi entry.

  • I remember it being pretty popular for a while. Looks pretty fancy, like a more ambitious Persona (in terms of presentation).
I'd be curious to read some impressions when you're done with it.

  • I also tried a version with entries enveloped in quote formatting, to help in case of multiple patches for one game but I'm not sure if it's any better. I'll leave it here for comparison:

    Patch list:

  • I'll start us out with a bit of an official business - our planned VN patch list.

I posted this before in the mod changes thread but I'll drop this here as well for better visibility and because I made some formatting changes to help with entry readability. Here's the current version:

    Patch list:

  • I get it, I'm just thinking about keeping backups for some of the patches just in case. Direct linking isn't a bad idea but I'm worried about people skipping the original source and not looking there in case of problems or questions.

Don't worry, I don't mean to "steal" content from other communities. If people feel comfortable posting here I have no problem with that but I agree posting to specific communities is preferable. I was mostly commenting on your point about not being into the stuff popular on r/visualnovels - I don't want this place to be a clone of that subreddit but also, more importantly to my post, I was talking about adding more varied patches and game suggestions to our planned lists (I don't want either of them to be just gal games).

  • We have two votes against then, I guess. Lets see if anyone else weighs in on this, it would be nice to have a broader consensus on such topics.

    • I have quite a bit of bias against generative AI personally and would rather prefer to avoid it. As a mod however I'll follow the rules like a good cookie, whatever the community decides.
    • I think this is a good stance. Keep it rare enough to avoid a dev community feel but allow folks to share their work when ready.
    • Link to the instructions wouldn't be a bad idea, I'm not too sure about putting them inside the post as I'd like to limit the clutter as much as possible. Will play around with this.
    • I thought about mirrors as well. I'm on too minds on whether to make them from the get go or post them as needed - on one hand it won't take much space (unless downloads consist of multiple files or versions), on the other I'm still not entirely happy with readability and uploading every patch will _ pretty quick.
    • Don't worry about the popular VNs, I'd like this to be a place for everyone so titles with any other focus are welcome - whether it's BL, otome, LGBT themed or anything else. If you have suggestions for the patch list or the entry games list, feel free to share them with the class. We're aiming to get away from the reddit replacement feel after all.
    • List of patches will definitely be posted as a separate thread. I dropped it as a comment looking for feedback and hoping for links to patches I'm not familiar with. I'll post another comment in the upcoming general discussion thread to show off the updated formatting but other than that I'll try to drop the proper list sometime in April.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, they're really helping me with prep and planning!

  • I'm still a bit too busy to do much reading at the moment but I can happily report that The Saga of Tanya the Evil is finally being updated again. I just hope these updates are going to stick around for a while this time rather than disappear into the ether for another few months...

  • It really does feel livelier, doesn't it? It's nice to see the community growing like this. Congrats!

  • Thanks for feedback! I'm still not entirely happy with readability but I do have some ideas for that.

I think I covered my bases but is there anything else you'd like to see on such list?

  • I've been thinking about how to approach the VN patch thread, focusing on: formatting, should it include official patches (like content restoration ones for Steam releases), list of actual patches. I feel like the last one will be the biggest problem in the long run so if anyone knows about important patches feel free to link them here or message me directly.

    Here's my current formatting idea:

<some general info about patches etc.>

    Patch list

  • Fair enough, I guess I'll just stalk the adventure games community for recommendations.

  • Even having proper tags could be a start (though only for mobile apps at the moment). I agree though, as cool as Fediverse is the lack of users can be a real downside at times.

Do you have any particular text adventures you'd recommend? My experience with this format is rather limited but I'm always interested in trying out new games.

  • Yeah, I heard there were problems but I seem to have all the mod controls (I actually checked right after getting them).

Just tested deleting and restoring your comment to confirm in practice - it worked fine. I appreciate the reminder!

  • Thanks for mentioning it! Guess that takes care of my main point for allowing such games here.

  • Disclaimer: This is my personal opinion and not an official stance, that's something we'd have to decide on.

If we go by the the visual novel database definition then the answer is no. Personally, I wouldn't really mind.
If they do have illustrations and there's no better, existing community for that, text adventures could help diversify the content here (at least temporarily, until there's enough interest to split them into its own thing) as well as increase the awareness about this format.

I do think however there should be some kind of filter, like having enough visuals to fudge the definition if you squint a bit. There needs to be some balance between hard boundaries and watering down the purpose of this community.

That's just me though. If someone has stronger feelings on this topic I'm open to opinions on that.

  • I don't know about the newer ones but 4 and 0 were really fun experiences. I wish they were a bit longer to have more time to play with all the planes but other than that I have no real complaints.
