Heatmap of compound curse words used online. (sourced from reddit: 2006-2020)
• As an out of touch person, I have a possible explanation for this: have you ever said "shit" repeatedly as something goes wrong? I imagine some people would write a story where that happens and write it as "shitshitshit" and not "shit shit shit". But outside of that situation I have never seen or heard "shitshit".

• Guitar Porn: share (Safe For Work) pictures of your Electric Ladies
• I don't really have a dog in this fight (never followed any communities with this suffix pattern, here or on Reddit, not because of the suffix but just because all the ones I knew of weren't about something I'd want to see. Even if they were relevant to my interests… playing piano is fun for me, looking at pictures of pianos is pretty boring for me, and this is how I feel for a lot of things I'm interested in. I don't really get desire for new equipment once I have something functional and dear goodness do I not want to instill a desire for a material object I do not need via one of these communities) but I'd guess some people have no issue with porn itself, while also having to occupy an environment whose values they don't share. One where they might want to browse the community, and someone who does have an issue might see and pick a fight/assume unpleasant things/spread rumors, or some URL blocking scheme prevents viewing the site because it has "porn" in it and it gets reported to a higher-up or something as an attempt at viewing naughty stuff instead of just regular online procrastination.

And some people are also probably exasperated, assuming (not sure if this assumption is correct or not) the naming scheme was born of someone's immaturity and now they, just wanting to look at nice guitars, have to always see that assumed-13-year-old's influence on their nice picture place. These people might be more likely to have an issue with porn but I can still imagine someone who is a-okay with porn existing and people using it, while still being annoyed with the suffix.

Could also see people exasperated about what they see as an oversexualized world, with the idea that actual pornography is fine, it's a sexual thing in a sexual context! But putting sexually-charged images in things that are not supposed to be about sex is too much, and now this innocent guitar community too!?

Very possible to take issue with the suffix without being anti-pornography.

I personally fall into "hmm, it could come off as playful and the purpose is self-indulgently nice aesthetics which porn probably has, but it could also come off as 'did a 13-year-old who thinks they're so mature and edgy for referencing sex make this title', it's a bit annoying but ultimately not my problem."

• NameThatSong - for when you can't figure out the name of that one song
• Yep, definitely not new, but in the past I have seen people promote not-new communities that nonetheless are tiny and have not been posted here before so I figured it was okay. If you're concerned this sub is losing its purpose you might want to message the mod about changing the rules or something. I do not mind seeing old communities here but my opinion is not the only one that matters, and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca does exist even if it gets far less traffic.

Obsidian Sync appears to be down
• From the Obsidian Discord:

PSA: Our main server was taken down by a forced reboot at 2024-08-24 3AM EST / 12AM PST. When the account server was down, our services like Sync, Publish, and account functions like login or sign up were disrupted.

Normally our services would have immediately auto-restarted, however we made a mistake in the auto-restart configuration, which meant that it did not automatically restart. I was able to start it up again manually at 8AM EST. Everything is back to normal now.

I have since located the configuration issue and fixed it so if this happens again it would be down for at most a few seconds. Apologies for the inconvenience!

• Reading habits in Europe
• On one hand I get your point, but on another if you spend most of your time learning (but through other formats than books: through quality online articles or videos, and not eBooks) then it does not seem so bad to me.

I am reading nearly 24/7 but I complete a full actual book maybe once a year. Might be bigger if you count the books that have also (legally) been wholly posted online, but I often forget them because I read them just like an extra-long article: on my phone. I read peoples' original fiction that they post online so I'm not sure whether to count it or not.

I like longer articles but I do admit that I consume so much less long-form content than I did as a child. At least I avoid TikTok and Reels and the like? (Not to be elitist, but because I know I specifically would get addicted and waste my life. Very bad for my particular ADHD brain.) Also something something possible link between lower attention spans and only consuming short-form content. So I get the general gist of your idea and agree even if I do not particularly agree with the emphasis on the medium of books.

Tips on tensioning continental?

I have no idea how to do this. Sometimes I pick up the yarn and it runs nicely, sometimes I end up with, say, 1 inch of length that just keeps getting shorter the more stitches I make and I must manually pull more from the ball instead of me just getting more yarn from the ball naturally with each stitch. ("1 inch" was just made up for this example, never actually measured it.) I have no idea what is affecting this. But the tension is awful and my practice piece looks like this. Please help me!

The 5 Knitting Styles (And How to Knit Them)
www.allfreeknitting.com The 5 Knitting Styles (And How to Knit Them)

Everyone's knitting style is a little different. Whether it's tension, your personal knitting gauge, or the way you wrap your yarn around your fingers. But when it comes to which hand you hold your yarn in, the knitting world is pretty divided. There are five basic knitting styles based on ...

The 5 Knitting Styles (And How to Knit Them)

Caveat: when the article mentions the "dominant hand" and "non-dominant hand" they really just mean "right hand" and "left hand". These knitting styles do not adjust to your personal handedness. So I guess you can read it as written if you're right-handed, but if you're left-handed this was not written with you in mind.

What notes do you find yourself on most often?

Whether you just refer to them, or you continuously edit them. Asking because it's always fun to hear about other peoples' use cases and experiences with Obsidian. And because I was thinking about some reference notes I made that I do not actually use for one reason or another, but it boils down to something like this: https://xkcd.com/1205/. I miscalculated how much pain or time making the reference resource would save me. That note gets 0 visits. Meanwhile, other notes I made get near-daily references, and I feel so glad that I made that note because it makes my life a little easier or better.

Converts from other notetaking software: how, why, and was your conversion complete?

On the "conversion complete" bit: if you migrated your stuff from, say, Notion, did you move all of it to Obsidian or do you still use Notion for some things?

I moved from Notion after I made a database of about 40 items and Notion became super slow for me. I manually moved my information over and didn't finish doing that. I don't use Notion anymore, except to transfer things that are still hanging out there. (They are not things I expect to need to reference frequently, hence being able to not use Notion and leave them untransferred. However, I still want to transfer them because I might need to at some point, and want it in one place instead of having to run back to Notion.)

I used to use Google Docs for my academic notes and have been writing new ones in Obsidian. I transferred a few docs manually, but the rest are, like with Notion, untransferred and still in Google Docs. Since I still do use Docs for anything collaborative, since the workspace is still something I use, it is still convenient for me to just search for my old academic notes in Docs. Would like to eventually transfer to Obsidian. I originally wanted Notion to be my place for everything, and to move all my Docs information to Notion. Now that I've abandoned Notion for Obsidian, my goal to move my Docs information has changed to moving it to Obsidian.

There are probably plugins to transfer from these places to Obsidian, or at least some script to make .md files out of Notion and Docs things. Part of why I don't do this is because when I transfer, I also like to clean up the information. Investigate things that were written down hastily that I no longer understand, make that stream-of-consciousness more comprehensible, remove information or to-do-later things that are no longer relevant…

What sources of information (e.g. books with patterns, yarn ranking sites, how-to-guides) do you use for knitting?

While I am asking about what knitting resources you use I might as well plug this thread asking for knitting resources for beginners.

I have a Ravelry account I rarely use. I come here from time to time. I still have a few how to knit books I got as a child. And I have a few specific tutorials (none are video-only, they are all image + text tutorials) bookmarked online that I know I'll need to refer back to sometime in the future:

• https://nourishandnestle.com/tension-in-knitting-too-loose-tight-or-inconsistent/
• https://www.yarnspirations.com/blogs/how-to/how-to-knit-cables
• https://sarahmaker.com/stockinette-stitch/
• https://smokeandslate.com/pages/weave-in-ends-stockinette-stitch

Finally, I keep the pattern I am working on written out in Obsidian (@obsidianmd@lemmy.world says hi), with a little note at the bottom describing the tension I am using and this: "Finished row x, need to start at row x + 1". (If I wrote 'row x' I would have no idea if I just finished it and need to start x + 1, or if I just finished x - 1 and need to start row x. That was a serious issue for me when using just a counter that ticks up. I could just technically write 'Finished row x' but I feel better both writing that and 'need to start row x + 1'.)

Honestly curious, as someone who keeps hearing a lot about "my daily notes" but who personally doesn't use them.
