  • Rather than excellent timing, I would bet that Meta saw the writing on the wall the moment Twitter started doing cuestionable things under Elon. I don’t think they would’ve launched Threads to compete against pre-Elon Twitter.

Also, albeit small in overall users, there’s been a constant exodus of users ever since Elon took over, so they are trying to capitalize on that.

No social network dies over night, but with Threads racing to become the mainstream text-based social media, Twitter will be slowly becoming irrelevant, until it dies.

    Edit: Grammar

  • I use Ivory for browsing Mastodon, and I’d bet that the app is more polished than any other first-party social media app.

The problem with Mastodon (and Lemmy to some extent) is that the onboarding process is not as straightforward, thus causing some friction for the less tech-savvy users.

  • A couple weeks back I was at a French food cafeteria, and I was in the mood for a “French toast”, but I couldn’t find it in the menu for the life of me.

I had to google “French toast name in France”, and that’s how I was able to know the name to order it haha

It’s “Pain perdu” for those wondering.

  • Liftoff! is super snappy, but I can’t get used to the UI, to me it seems like it lacks attention to detail on the visuals part of the app.

Edit: I just figured out why it looks so strange to me: the app is very Material Design-y, so it feels outta place on iOS.

  • The Head of Instagram commented on this:

“We’re committed to building support for ActivityPub, the protocol behind Mastodon, into this app. We weren’t able to finish it for launch given a number of complications that come along with a decentralized network, but it’s coming,” he said.

“If you’re wondering why this matters, here’s a reason: you may one day end up leaving Threads, or, hopefully not, end up de-platformed. If that ever happens, you should be able to take your audience with you to another server. Being open can enable that.”

Look, I don't want to be Devil's advocate for Meta, but I'm kinda hopeful as I truly believe they entering the fediverse can be a good thing in the long run.

  • it’s the camera view of your face from the inside.

When you’re setting up the device, you scan your face to create a “Persona” which is a digital representation of your face, this is what’s shown in the outside of the thing.

The cameras are used to track your eyes and have the “Persona”’s eyes move mimicking yours.

  • Having the Instagram branding would bring more celebrities and such, which will undoubtedly attract more people to the fediverse.

Once they’re in and are more familiar with the whole thing, moving them to Mastodon shouldn’t be that hard.

  • Given that you’re trying to “get out of twitter” as you said, and that you’re posting this on c/fediverse, I believe a more apt suggestion would be to try out Mastodon, which is part of the fediverse, unlike Bluesky.

  • If the whole fediverse thing gets to the mainstream, more people can start looking at ways to be less corporate-dependent in their digital lives, and maaaybe start considering Linux as their main OS.

I know it’s a bit of a stretch, but hey! people can dream I guess.

  • The problem with this kind of decisions is that there are some people that want the fediverse to remain somehow underground, which would drive some people away from it.

As for the Reddit talk, I reckon it’s expected given how much people is coming expecting to get the Reddit experience. However, I believe the dust will settle as the time passes, and everyone will start to see Lemmy as its own thing.

A similar thing happens at Mastodon every time there’s a new influx of users. People want to have a familiar experience, and that’s normal.
