  • OP, I wish you would stop spreading rumors. As others have pointed out, there's no real evidence these allegations are credible.

For more context, nearly all modern solar equipment and energy storage devices (like Tesla Powerwalls) come with cellular equipment for firmware updates and production monitoring when there isn't a better connection available. It's just how it's done nowadays, it's not inherentely nefarious.

Now for some critical thinking. What does China really gain from taking out PV power sources? Those power sources are only producing power less than half the time people need it. Wouldn't it be better to attack the 24/7 baseload power producers like a gas powerplant? If you take out the PV that gas plant will compensate, just like it does when it's cloudy. For this reason there's little point to attacking the auxillary, intermittent power sources.

  • Two questions:

    1. Why?

The satellites are part of ADA Space’s “Star Compute” program and the first of what it calls the “Three-Body Computing Constellation,”

    1. Why that name? I've read that book series and I'm now concerned.
  • My gut reaction to the idea of unplugging is that it's unwise. It's too easy for groups on one side of the planet to unintentionally affect groups on the other side. I think there will always be a need for a reasonable level of global communication and cooperation.

  • If you enjoy this idea then you'd probably like Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky and its sequals. Adrian did, imo, an excellent job imagining how other intelligent earth species would behave and form societies.

  • Hey buddy, you should have further insight into what you're commenting on before you make highly regarded statements.

I know a few things about PV equipment. Nearly all modern inverters have communication systems for mointoring the system's output so you can determine whether panels stop working or if the inverter is on the fritz. Nobody except maybe a private homeowner would want an inverter that doesn't communicate. Also what would the Chinese government get from disrupting PV equipment? No grid is going down because PV isn't working. Remember the sun isn't always shining. As of now these allegations are just that, allegations.

  • Nah, if I understood the article correctly they need to mix a bit of the pyrolysis material with a lot of new material and make a product to claim it's made recycled. They can't just burn the material and claim they're making products from recycled plastic.

  • The plaintiffs in Los Angeles said the soda companies were claiming that the bottles were continuously recyclable, when in reality, plastic bottles can be recycled only once, if at all.

How's that work? Like how can someone tell a bottle has been made with recycled plastic?

  • You don't understand Texas's powergrid. It's a free market, there is little planning or foresight. Large scale power production is provided by hundreds, possibly thousands, of independent producers who can turn their production on as they see fit, in other words, when it's profitable. Therefore backup generation for solar is already present. If there's not enough, then the market will dictate how much to build and where. That's how it works in Texas.

instead of dumping the volatility on ancillary services, which get less revenue, because of their off-time, accommodating wind and solar.

Free market, they can deal with it. Yes, it's a dumb system, but thems the rules in Texas.

A mandate like this makes room for reliable energy rollout, basically more support for natural gas, and presumably batteries, instead of just crowding out the preferred energy types.

This bill is clearly designed to stifle renewable production in favor of fossil energy. Requiring one mode of production to have or purchase backup generation isn't fair in the current market system. Do away with the market system first before putting a thumb on the scale.

Also preferred energy types? Energy types with the least amount of emissions should be preferred. Not gas, not coal, not oil, or whatever else Texas wants to burn.

  • I dunno man, I bet the current population trajectory plus improvements in efficiency/ conservation with a lot less capitalism will likely be sufficient. 90% just seems like a lot more work than necessary.
