  • My favorite genre of journalism: other countries' journalists writing about the US the same way the US writes about their countries. I'm just sad they didn't dredge up some "America expert" who's never been to the US and doesn't speak English to call for mass balkanization of the country followed by conspiracy theory screeds for the extra flavor.

  • Outside of certain sects of Fudds I think the general gun nut consensus is that ARs and AKs have both been functionally perfected, and either is fine. Modern ARs can be beat to shit and keep cycling rounds, and modern AKs have much better accuracy than their cheap ancestors did.

  • Drones and a fuckload of conventional artillery. Turns out the latter has always been hyper effective against damn near any target if you can spot efficiently.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  • Next thing you know they'll have Zelda crossdress as some kind of woke ninja and fight Ganondorf herself

  • How could we have possibly known that it occasionally rains in places that aren't California?

  • Shooting someone on Fifth Avenue would be downright quaint by the standards of American presidents. If he did that in exchange for cutting funding to Israel's genocides I'd consider it a strict upgrade.

  • For someone as obsessed with surface level cyberpunk aesthetics as Elon is, you'd think he'd at least hire some LARPers to pretend to be Arasaka ninjas and guard him.

We really are living in cyberpunk-without-the-cyber, we don't even get the cool cyborg cops kicking our doors in.

  • Yeah, there's not any evidence I'm aware of yet that micro plastics in the body do much of anything. That's not to say that it doesn't, just that whatever it might do is not so dramatic that we're able to immediately tell.

  • This is why the English have to claim half of the food their immigrants brought with them as their own, lest they look up and realize the only tasty thing they make themselves is deep-fried (and even then that's arguably Scottish).

  • I'm not sure how to feel about them recasting Kane with Saddam Hussein. This is bald white guy erasure

  • As it turns out, a system where your best and brightest get paid jack shit after going insanely in debt to be there only to end up working for some underfunded research lab that's going to sell all their work to private capital to be gouged for profit or locked in a vault for all eternity isn't one that entices people to join it.

    Who would've thunk?

  • Forget fusion, China already has a significant portion of its national electrical grid on solar or nuclear. And while those aren't zero emission energy sources, they're pretty damn close to it.

There are significant forms of pollution and carbon emissions associated with manufacturing EVs, especially their batteries, but between all of this China is both increasing their infrastructure and meaningful tackling emissions all at once.

  • Reading this comment without knowing this existed until now has me in full treat boy slop mode. How dare you do this to me?

  • Men don’t date women for social status, it’s women who do that.

Given this reply on the OOP, I'd say that not only have they never talked to or seen a woman before, but they're blissfully unaware that's even an option.

  • One of these days I'm going to buy a red robe and some incense before sitting down to fix an IT problem, and it's entirely because of this

  • I sincerely cannot understand why anyone would find the idea of spending a week in the scorching desert sun listening to the Grateful Dead's grandchildren playing their music before sleeping in a tent with just enough water to not die of dehydration fun.

I can, however, imagine a person who would find that fun, and now I can't imagine how that person would pay $1500/person to go to that.

  • Give every homeless person an AR-15.

  • Sweden is social democratic, which is just capitalism with some extra crumbs given to the poor. It's not socialist as the workers do not own the means of production nor is there any large scale political machine pushing to do that.
