progressives were going ott declaring everyone and everything problematic in some way and making itbalmost embarrassing to be part of the left
There's a lot to unpack there, but I'm not gonna.
Not being able to criticise your own side when they’re going too far isn’t mature politics.
Who was insinuating that progressives can't be criticized? Where did that line come from? We're talking about doing research into your podcasters and content creators to make sure that they support human rights, that's it.
But you do you if you’re okay supporting potential bigots.
Idk how to address this without being snarky, but maybe work on reading comprehension. I'm calling the podcasters you don't research potential bigots, not even bigots, potential bigots. Which is to say I'm not condemning them or you to being bigots but you don't know whether they are or not without researching it, therefore they are potential bigots. You are not a bigot, the podcasters you don't research are potential bigots.
K, you should. To make sure you're not supporting a piece of shit by giving them your time, clicks, and views. But you do you if you're okay supporting potential bigots.
It's not even a high effort task, just find the name of the podcast and add "political leanings" or something similar in the web search. It's the minimal effort required to be an informed consumer.
I love that this headline is followed by the "moderator" and "admin" tags by OP so that it looks even more official. Like yes, this is a normal unit of measurement, so says the admin lol
I thought garlic bread is for the asexuals and we have lemon bars.
Idk I've heard garlic bread used in a lot of communities from trans, asexual, to pan and bi. I don't think I've ever heard/seen the lemon bar memes though. 🤷
Bisexuality has a long history. I think it’s really interesting and I really enjoy diving in.
You're right and I probably should've gone into a longer list of celebrities to look into for different perspectives on bisexuality than just David Bowie. He's just the first pop culture reference that personally comes to my mind. It goes all the way through history though. Ancient Greece, Rome, Japan, and China all have records talking about the practice of bisexuality in that society (even if they called it by another name). Then in more recent memory there's Bill Beasley, of course, Alan Rockway, and many more names that you can find digging deeper into bisexuality's more modern history... I'm on mobile so linking directly is kind of a pain 😅
Meme wise? Garlic bread, frogs, and sitting in chairs the wrong way.
Real world culture? Maybe watching some David Bowie documentaries, he might be the most famous bisexual that I know of. But he's also not the definition of what bisexual is. It's more of a spectrum in and of itself, as it manifests differently for each individual. Like for me, I'm bisexual but in a monogamous relationship which would not work for other bisexuals and that's okay. Explore yourself to find what bisexuality means to you.
Real talk, meditation helped me discover myself and what my gender/sexuality meant to me. Just being with myself, my inner thoughts, and listening. I know that meditation doesn't necessarily work for everyone though, so you may need to find another way to explore yourself. But that's what worked for me so just sharing my method.
I wish you luck in your journey of self discovery, happy to help where I can even if our journeys aren't identical 😊
Looking at the comments I'm so happy Beehaw has an overall good take on this subject. With progressive mindsets it seems 50/50 whether they agree with protecting cats and the environment. There is so much science that shows having cats be outdoors not only decimates local fauna but also increases mortality of the cat up to ~80% (over the years I've seen studies on that subject ranging from 67% to 85%). Keep your cat inside if you care about it, if it's bored you're not playing with it enough or don't have a good environment for it to explore and keep entertained. Pay attention to your cats.
I'm in a similar boat, past couple months have been rough on the finances with some unexpected expenses so I haven't been able to donate yet but plan to after my situation settles down again. Such is life.
hopefully it’ll be enough at least to keep a small part of the community safe
Even if there's only one instance that's not federated with them it would be enough for a community, not as active sure, but it would be enough. We already have hundreds not federating with them! We won't have their user count but that's okay, we don't need billions of users like the centralized platforms to survive. We'll be alright, take a breather and enjoy your stay in the fediverse free of corpos 😄
On that note, because there's no ads/monetization we have to donate to support the server so make sure you're helping to support the instances you use (if you're able.)
As long as instances defederate from them we should be just fine. I already know Beehaw is defederating from them so we're good here, and the instance of mastodon I'm on isn't federating with them. So just look up your instance's stance on the subject and join one that's making the right call. Then you know the communities you're building won't get Zucked
Data gained through integration of an instance is far more than what's gained in scraping. The data gained through federation will no doubt increase as Meta adds new features that require more data in order to federate with them. They have over a decade of evidence showing us they're evil and have no respect for privacy or people. I do not understand your logic in saying it's okay to federate, it's like watching somebody defend an abusive partner. They've hurt you and communities in the past, stop giving them more rope. The devil does not need an advocate.
This is a public facing forum platform, it's not meant to be a secure messaging platform. Now if you wanted to run your own Lemmy instance and not federate with anybody you could in theory make it secure from prying eyes.
Oh, contraire.
